Not exactly true - the first Females of rap came out long before Nicki Minaj even touched a mic, releasing a single in 1979, 5 years before Nicki Minaj was born. They are:
1)MC Sha Rock with a group called the Funky 4+1; she was the first Female rapper (along with the Funky 4 +1, the other 4 members being Male) to appear on national television on Saturday Night Live in 1981. 2) An all-Female rap group called, "The Sequence" who released a single called, "Funk You Up", also in 1979. That song was the first rap record released by a Female group;

Soon after would come MC Lyte, Salt N' Pepa, Bahamadia, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Heather B, and several others in the 80s and early 90s who were all considered mainstream. Many of them still perform today, but most of them have gone underground, as have many of their Male counterparts who were pioneers and innovators back in the early days.

The term rap (in respect to the music) was actually used in the context of what a rapper was doing while they were on the mic. It even goes further back to the 60s when it was used as a slang term for persuasive talking, i.e., "He's rapping to that Woman over there"; the music itself, even as far back as the late 70s, was referred to by its artists as Hip Hop, especially Sugar Hill Gang who used the term in it's lyrics in one of the earliest Hip Hop songs, "Rapper's Delight". The term rap really didn't become used as a label for Hip Hop music until the mainstream starting talking about it. Nowadays, people confuse the two altogether. Though rap is a close relative of Hip Hop, (only in the fact of the rhythmic speaking aspect) it isn't Hip Hop. Therefore, in my view, Nicki Minaj (and many other mainstream artists like her) is a rap artist, not a Hip Hop artist.
