Finally bought myself Tron: Legacy yesterday (although to be fair, it's only been out since Wed 20th in Australia) and out of curiosity, I got myself the Blu-Ray / DVD / digital copy version (I don't have a BR player yet; gonna wait until I clear my credit card debt afore I splurge on one o' them babies).

So I downloaded Leagcy via iTunes (Legacy on my iPod nano! Awesme! I know I can barely see it, but awesome anyway! I can go, Looklooklooklooklook it's Legacy on my nano! to all my friends! Innit awesome?I) and watched it on my computer (and, yes, on my iPod nano) last night / this morning and I noticed something intriguing: For certain scenes, the digital copy actually changes aspect ratio from cinema widescreen (2.39:1) to full hi-def (16:9).

This puzzled me - until I realised that the 16:9 scenes are the Big Wow ones: when the Recognizer first appears to claim Sam, the lightcycle battle and even the scenes on the solar sailer. Ergo, they're the scenes that probably got the IMAX treatment.

I thought this might be something unique to the digital copy, but I just checked the DVD and the same thing happens. I think this is pretty cool; it's like Disney is giving us a touch of the IMAX experience, especially bods like me who don't have an IMAX within a few thousand kilometres!

Is that limited to Blu-Ray? I rmemeber my Dark Knight DVD being 2.39:1 only.

Oh, I re-watched Tron: Legacy yesterday while doing the ironing and finally notived the sign that pops up before the movie startsd saying how certain scenes have been brought across from IMAX to preserve that experience.
