The New Movie & The Identity Discs

on Thursday, April, 14, 2011 8:13 PM
I think the new Tron is amazing. I really do. I genuinely think the first 45 minutes are pretty flawless in setting up the story over 20 years later. It has nostalgia. It has a new beginning. It has a continuation to the storyline.

My fiancee watched it this week with me, and she really only had question that I found myself perplexed at answering.

I feel absolutely, completely silly for asking this... so take pity on me. I've only seen the films and played the older Intellivision games, so forgive me if I'm just a complete idiot on this.

But I figure, much like how I love Star Wars more than most, the Tron people in this forum can help as there are things about Star Wars one can only understand from serious study of books and games.

Therefore, her question is simply this... why are the identity discs placed on the character's backs? Basically, if it's such an important item of both the character and the story, why have it placed in the easiest area to be stolen? Much like a wallet.

Any answer is truly appreciated. I told her that really it was probably just a matter of aesthetics. If you want to read more about how this came up and how stupid I felt, you can read more here...

But really, you don't have to. I'm just looking for a straightforward answer in this forum. Thanks.

Excited to see the TRON area at Disneyland tonigh...

Hm, I think it's for the most part it's for the aesthetic design.
But no one knows for certain.
One would have to ask Syd Mead and Jean "Mobius" Geraud whom did the original concept design for the first Tron, why they designed the costumes to have the discs on Program's backs.
Neville Page probably wanted to keep that element of the design in the Tron Legacy.

I can't think of where else they would put them. If you tried to put them on the leg, they would be real wide and awkward and always catching on things. In Tron 2.0 when putting your disc away it goes on your forearm, but I don't think that would be practical for day-to-day (or millicycle-to-millicycle ) use.

For the most part, its location is clearly for aesthetic design. Particularly because it was introduced as a weapon, the ideal symmetrical position for it would be on the back, much like any other fictional or "borderline" fictional weapon, its just cooler to have it "back-holstered" for quick access.

The realistic pitfalls of it being easily stolen are introduced only in Tron: Legacy, where its deemed more important than just a weapon and personal item, and where characters/programs have deeper agendas, motivating them to steal, swap, or forge discs. IMO losing your disc has always been a taboo thing, although not a real threat in the original TRON. It is definetly more of a focus in TL, and objectified more heavily.

Much like other sci-fi series, the progression of the story forces you to closely examine and justify the holes set forth from the beginning.

As I've said in other discussions about this...does it really need to be so big? I mean, in the real world we have the technology to keep several gigs of info on an itty-bitty flash drive...ID discs couldn't be smaller?

(Or as I once said, "If I need a method of identification and a weapon, give me a thumb drive I can wear around my neck or put in my pocket, and a .357 I can carry any way I like, and the problem is solved.")

(It's also worth it to mention that in my fanfic, one of the social mores of the Grid is that it's rude to touch someone else's disc without permission. Makes sense. It's a pretty personal object. I mean, combine the taboos of just grabbing someone's social security card or wallet, and those of touching another person, period... you probably wouldn't just hand your disc to someone you weren't close to or who didn't have a need to handle it, and you'd probably deal pretty harshly with someone who just grabbed it off your back same as you would if they tried to pick your pocket.)

What do you want? I'm busy.

Program, please!

You guys are awesome, amazing, and beyond courteous.

I am glad my answer of it being merely an aesthetic decision seems to be the correct.

It DOES look much cooler there. Way better than say... the waist or chest.

Thanks for showing once again how kind and polite us geeks are with your thoughtful responses.

be well!

end of line.

If you think of when the original Tron was made, that's when the 5" Floppy discs were the storage unit of choice. That being said, in the middle of the floppies, obviously, was a large round hole that would stabilize the disc. I always saw the original discs as the 'negative impression' of a 5" floppy. It makes sense that the programs version of the data he/she possessed would be the counterpart to what a 'user' sees in the real word. Just a thought...

Discs are exactly like wallets, they're placed somewhere where it can be easily taken, it stores important information, and it can be used as a weapon!

I thought something similar when Clu ordered Rinzler to get Sam's disk. No by your leave, just "disk!" And then tosses it casually back to Rinzler. Now Sam is a User but for any program, I agree, a trespass against them.

Forget it, Mr High and Mighty Master Control. You aren't making me talk.

Almost like not touching someone else's daemon in "His Dark Materials" to a lesser extent.

Yes, and that could be in part where I came up with it. Well, the idea popped into my head because I briefly considered one scene where there are two characters who are newly in a relationship and one touches the other's disc accidentally but doesn't apologize, or hands the other his/her disc, or something and so I thought of the scene in...what, the third book, and I realized it was a similar concept?where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online
