Any audiophiles here?
I'm wanting to get some new headphones, thing is there are dozens of brands in the stores around me. I can't make heads of them all.
Is there a brand you would recommend and others you would recommend I stay clear of? I'm not out for a Rolls Royce type of head phones that cost a fortune, but want some that are nice, durable and have good sound quality.

My recommendation
If you look hard enough, you can find these cheaper.
Hope I helped.

i double the recommendation for sennheiser's, i've had a trusty pair of HD280's that's survived every sticky DJ gig to insane sound accidents. (basically when experimenting with fx or building new instruments, i'd rather risk the headphones than blow out my monitors.)
they're comfy, loud as hell, and fairly even across the frequency plot.
even may come off as flat to some listeners but i'd rather have a correct representation
of what i'm hearing instead of over hyped treble and bass.
the only flaw is the stereo spread is just too wide for mixing,
chances are if you're not doing any of that, there's zero flaws then.

Not to sound mainstream or anything, but I have the Beats earbuds, and they're pretty awesome.

The Sennheiser HD428 is a great headphone if your budget is $50'ish. The bass response on these are probably one of the best in its pricerange. I also own a pair of HD280 pro's and the quality is very hard to beat for the price. They are very robust and will last you a few years at least.
I use a pair of Audio-technica Quietpoint ATH-ANC7 for everyday and airplane use. I used to do alot of traveling as a camera assistant (not as much nowadays) and these were perfect for everyday use, as well as the ocassional in-terminal "no thanks, im quite busy, as you can see" and even on the plane it blocks out an amazing ammount of jet noises.

MSRP is $150'ish but you can find them for $100 or less (the ANC7b model is slightly different, smaller, and a bit more expensive) i personally would choose the non "b" model for its earcup size and design. I cannot find any reason why the "b" is that much more desireable, although it is the slightly newer version. I have owned mine for more than two years now and they are still good as new, not a single problem.
Noise-canceling is great on these, its active with an on/off switch so you get audio with or without a full AAA battery, lack of sound-canceling does not cause the headphones to in and out. and noise canceling can be used alone without sound input if you just want to use them as earmuffs. The wire is detachable from the unit so accidental yanks on the cord does not result in destroyed headphones.
If i were spending $200-$350 id get the Monster Tron T1 Daft Punk edition of course, but there is very little review on these and sadly, like most other Tron branded products, have not had the best distribution, I have a friend who is still waiting on a pair he preordered in Dec last year.
Anyone own or have tried the Monster T1's ??? Open doors, like open minds

Thanks gang.
The Sennheiser HD428 look very nice and are the price range I'm looking for.
All the shops around me have their headphones around that price as well but swear it's all flimsy specialty designer crap that looks like it wouldn't last a month of use. https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue_bezel/ |

i actually have alot of experience with audio equipment.
the pinnacle of sound, especially headphone-wise, is Skullcandy.
they make the absolute best pro audio headphones on the planet.
they're also really affordable if you go to the right place. i know an ebay store that sells earbuds for half of what they cost at stores.

I consider myself an audiophile although I don't use headphones (speakers only). You may want to read some of Steve Guttenberg's blogs on CNET, he often reviews audiophile grade headphones. I don't know how much money you have but you can get descent headphones for a few hundred dollars, entry level audiophile headphone amps start around $250. If you go inear then you probably want something that they mold to your ear so that's going to cost another 100 bucks at your local audiologist's office. Once again, it depends on how much money you want to spend.

My Sennheiser HD428 headphones came in today.
I'm still getting used to their sound. It's strange, my older headphones which were a cheap $18 set from Walmart have more bass and volume than the Sennheiser HD428. I'm still going through some music to see how much a difference I can tell in sound quality, which I'm having difficulty really telling at the moment other than the two main aspects mentioned before. They do sound good, but I'm teetering that my el-cheapo headphones sound warmer if that makes sense. Treble Booster on my iPod helps things. Still testing various music to get a feel for these.
The headphones are very comfortable and I do like they deaden outer noise. Will help me focus when working on art projects.
Excuse me while I zone out to the Videodrome soundtrack for a bit. https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue_bezel/ |
