Tron and Tron Legacy Blu-Ray reviews with 1080p screenshots

on Friday, March, 25, 2011 6:25 AM
Posted this over at the Tron Legacy board, but since the pictures are of the original TRON, I thought I'd re-post it here!

Here's a few Blu-Ray reviews for Tron and Tron Legacy:

this one has a few screenshots that look pretty amazing:

Holy cow its so clear.
I daresay the quality is sharper than the original, definetly better than the 20th aniversary DVD.

must buy.

Here's shots I downloaded from the HDNet broadcast of TRON back last summer. I believe from these shots we can assume that the broadcast HD source was probably the same as the HD source used for the original 2002 DVD mastering. The difference IS spectacular!

These, unfortunately, aren't shot-for-shot comparisons but I tried to make them close.

Theres a pretty apparent difference in color density. I wonder if this is a direct result of 1080i vs 1080p. But more importantly the saturation is so much better, the mid tones are much sharper and the highlights dont burn like they do on my livingroom crt.
yumyumyum

Im also noticing a green - magenta shift between the two versions, but doesnt seem to be consistent with all your screen comparisons. Maybe its only visible scene by scene? Either way the bluray looks cleaner by comparison only.

EDIT*
the colors dude!... the colors!

Couldn't have put it better myself, thanks! Steven LIsberger said last summer that he had completely re-color timed TRON for the blu-ray release, and like I previously stated I think it's also a difference in where the HD source came from. My guess is Disney released the 2002 HD master for broadcast. Wouldn't be too surprised if this new HD transfer was sourced from a 4k or 8k master.

The shots showing Flynn in his home on the computer are the best representation of the differences, also showing what you mentioned about the degree of color shift. I also noticed that the HDNet broadcast looked grainy and flat while the Blu-Ray looks truly three dimensional!

Another film that showed this kind of drastic shift in clarity and color representation was The Matrix, between it's SD and HD transfers.

I like how the sides of the buildings in-between the title resemble a grid.... the visual quality looks phenominal on the original film.

Just wish the label art on the DVD wasn't so dull...

For anyone that has not seen these in high definition yet, I can't wait to hear your stories. Maybe you should set up cameras to take a shot of your first viewings! I'm telling you, it is awesome.

Thanks, ya lucky b@stard!!!

Something else about the original TRON using Super 70 Panavision is that the focal depth using those lenses is nearly razor thin so some scenes might appear softer than others simply because the point of focus is on a particular object leaving everything in front of and behind that point out of focus. An excellent example of this is the shot with Laura, Alan and Walter. If you look closely you'll see that both Alan and Walters badges are blurred but Laura's badge is in focus and Alan's face looks a bit soft but Laura's glasses and face are sharp in contrast.

Mr. Brian Orndorf pretty much hits the nail on the head with his endearing review of the 5 disc set of Tron and Tron Legacy on blu-ray:

That's a pretty solid review. I'm glad that the Tron Blu-Ray remains faithful to the original.

Interesting choice to have it retain a "grainy" texture. (I'm under the assumption that the technology exists to wipe away the grainy texture in older movies) Not a deal-breaker, by my part. I don't mind.

I love how the colors spark with electric vibrancy again. I am definitely looking forward to the Blu-Ray of Tron.

Seeing all this has made me start to re-think if I want to stick with my original plan of getting the 4 disc version of TL or go with the 5 disc version that includes both films. I still think that the 20th anniversary DVD of Tron has a great looking upconverted image with a great 5.1 sound matrix to match.

I did notice that Best Buy has advertised the 4 disc version of TL to $26.99 with the 5 disc version containing both films is selling for $49.99. I'm not keen on the original film being re-branded with the subtitle "The Original Classic" though.

I also got this link in my e-mail yesterday. It advertises a $5 coupon towards the purchase of either 4 or 5 disc versions of TL being released:

I understand that they have methods to remove grain, something called digital noise reduction (DNR) but it also distorts the original resolution and can have the effect of making the picture look unnatural. I can understand you gripe about seeing anything in the image that reminds you of the films age but I implore you to go back to my comparison shots above, right-click them and open them in separate windows and do a full resolution comparison to see the amount of noise that was naturally removed and get a close look at the beautiful grain structure of the 1080p blu-ray.

I decided to purchase Tron Legacy and Tron original 2 disc blu-ray/dvd sets separately because through Amazon, with my account, I got them both for $38. The 5-disc set's only real bonus is having Tron Legacy in Blu-Ray 3D, and if you don't have a 3D TV or 3D blu-ray player, @ $49 your pretty much wasting your money!

No, I saw. I guess I wrote my post wrong, or something.

I said it wasn't a deal breaker, it doesn't bother me either way grain or not grainy, it's still Tron on Blu-Ray.

Is it just me or is it awesome that the blue transmission ray Tron's disc is riding is hitting the "Blu-Ray Disc" logo on the top of the case!

What type of paper did you print this on, Logansneo?

I want to do the exact same thing when I get the Tron Blu-Ray.

That is one dreadful cover. Did anyone notice that in the cover he has a disc in his hand and another one on his back?

Well, if the right type of paper is used, it could look legit.

Putting in the barcode would be a really nice touch, and put
"Disney Blu-Ray" on the cover somewhere. (I think they put that on Disney Blu-Rays, I'm not sure)
