A thread about my fave character. Funny thing is when I first heard Clu was the villain, of course, I remembered dear Clu, the hacker program who refused to betray his User. I was really upset they were going to rewrite him as bad. Then I found out, ok, it's not that Clu but a 2.0 version. And I likes him. ;-D
Points:
when in Flynn's house, why does he start to pick up the gold Bit, then pulls back to choose the silver one? Any purpose to that anyone can venture a guess on? He also shows an interest in how his creator lives, not trashing the place, or just going in to hunt Flynn down and leave, but checking things out.
Did your heart break a little when he tells Flynn "I did everything, everything you ever asked" practically begging acknowledgement. Does anyone think (for discussion purposes only since we don't know) that if Flynn had offered reconciliation, Clu would have agreed? He seems to be really listening to Flynn for awhile, but then kicks him down.
As a villain who could watch programs die, he is not a blatant killer himself. Oh sure, he got mad at Jarvis when the toady let Sam take the disk, but it was almost like temporary insanity. He does not choose to kill Quorra and he does not choose to kill Flynn, athough he had a chance to do in both on the bridge.
Anyway, just a few thoughts. I just love this character, and wish the film could have been 10 hours long just so there could have been more Clu storyline.. :-)where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill onlineabortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

Flynn basically told Clu that perfection (his directive) was impossible. Clu didn't take that well that's why he attacked him.
He misses his daddy though...

Did you play Tron: Evolution? An exchange between Flynn and Clu in one of the early cutscenes was the turning point in their relationship, IMO. If you've played it, you probably already know what scene I'm talking about. If not, here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO6HY2emhho&t=5m54s In particular, watch Clu's expression at around 6:40.
I really wish some version of this had appeared in the movie itself, possibly during Flynn's flashback sequence.

I picked up on that too. There was a real father/son moment there and it really made all of CLU's rebellious behavior make sense. I felt really bad for him.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill '> |

I wondered that too, as they seemed to really focus on a seemingly casual thing...and also had really focused on Flynn putting them on the mantel in the first place. Second time I watched it, I think I noticed that the one Flynn had been playing with earlier was the silver one, so perhaps it was meant to show they were opposites?on line abortion pill misoprostol dose abortion medical abortion pill onlinewhere to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online What do you want? It was nice to see that CLU was interested in how his Maker lived. I took this to mean that he had a general interest because he knew deep down he was really just a copy of Kevin Flynn. Observing what was in his dwellings probably helped CLU gain some insight into 'himself' that he may have lost. A bit like finding a photo album or a box of personal belongings from a close friend or family member who has passed on.
Now the two hand excersise balls CLU had...and Kevin's own pair ( that were bit shaped)..
When i first saw 'TRON : Legacy' i thought the scene with CLU watching the Disc War games was odd. My impression at the time was that the two balls he was turning around in his hand ( a form of meditative exercise) was somehow controlling the behavoir or moments of Rinzler. Later in the film i see Kevin doing his advanced meditation and his similar pair of exercise balls, but i did not make the connection until the 2nd viewing of the film.
Now my take on it is that it was a way of showing the two characters are essentially the same person. The fact they both used those hand balls told me that even CLU is still practicing some of the pastimes of his Maker. That was a cool way to give the viewer a way to make a indirect connection to the two of them.
Later when we see CLU find and pick up Kevin's bit-like ones it was a moment of realization for the character. He probably had no idea his Maker used them too...and it added to the fact that CLU was indeed just a copy. This was driven home in a more obvious way when CLU sees his reflection in the silver apple decoration on Kevin's table. It is a reflection of himself....and that is essentially what CLU is, a mere reflection of his Maker. He expresses that dismay with his little temper tantrum immediately afterwards, sweeping everything off the table in a fit of rage.
Brillant idea....using those hand balls....i loved that once i made the connection!
Man i love this movie....

No I haven't played but caught some clips of the game on youtube. Thanks for the link. And yay this will help with a fanfic I'm writing, so you have unwittingly helped me with that. Crazy thing is, Clu is part of Flynn, yet Flynn never once catches on how Clu is deceiving him. I guess in this case, looking in a mirror doesn't help.

It's great the way different people interpret scenes differently. Man, I wish my friends liked this film so could get together and have popcorn discussion groups, like book club groups do.
I took the temper tantrum scene to be off the piece when Flynn puts his arm around Clu and says they'll change the world together. And it shows them going off like two buds. When Clu comes back to the present, he yells "liar!" and sweeps the table clear. On the bridge, this is the first thing he refers to, how they were going to change the world....together. "You broke your promise." I'll bet Flynn never saw a promise there when he was younger.
2.5 weeks til the vid comes out. Ahhhh....it's too long lol.
Query: if Clu was made to create the perfect system, would Flynn have included building an army? Because that seems outside Clu's programming (requirement). Did he come up with that idea on his own and how?

Clu is a very interesting character, and I feel like he was under-used to some extent (which is understandable in terms of practicality, because of the expensive technology used to create him, but still...).
I felt like, at heart, Clu was just an "under-appreciated son" who finally snapped and rebelled against his father as a result. Clu saw the ISOs as a threat because of his programming/objective, and was appalled and/or threatened when Flynn seemed to embrace them anyway. Sort of like an older child seeing their younger sibling get by with things that they would not be allowed to do, or maybe seeing the younger sibling being favored by the parents... if that makes any sense.
I think it would have been cool if this storyline would have been pursued a little more. As it is, we see an awful lot of Clu as a vicious, bad@ss tyrant, but not as much of him as a vulnerable, almost child-like program that has been hurt by his user. That said, the movie is already over 2 hours long, so I understand that not every little character plotline could be fully explored. But it's still interesting!

Same thing, CLU 1.0 was more of just a regular program though whereas CLU 2.0 was more of an A.I.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

Cool photo Master!
I like the comments about Clu feeling he was being under appreciated by his Creator. That would explain a lot of his actions...and why he seems to want to wipe Sam out ( that jealous little Conscript....heh heh...).
When you think about it, CLU was almost like Kevin's 'first son'. I don't know the exact timeline , but assuming CLU was created before Sam was born it would make sense. No wonder he was so teed off!
I bought a TRON mag today at my local toy shop and it had a breif 'timeline' in there. It stated that in the mid- 80s things changed and CLU became upset that Kevin seemd to 'abandon' him for the real world.
Kevin was spending less time on The Grid because of real world issues - his wife dies and he was now left with the responsiblily of raising Sam AND running Encom. Quite a lot on his table...and not a lot of extra time suddenly to be exploring his Creation. Before that time, Kevin was chilling in cyberspace with CLU all the time it seemed...so i can see why his alter ego would be a bit miffed at the sudden lack of attention.
After i read this, it made sense why CLU would suddenly turn on him. WIthout Kevin around all the time, he probably felt he had best get on with his direction without him. When the Maker finally DID show up...CLU may have felt so confident in his own abilities to move The Grid forward that he did not need Kevin even there anymore. I totally agree with the comment regarding Kevin's 'broken promise' to CLU.
One of my fave scenes in 'Legacy' with CLU is the final scene where we see him pleading with his Maker. It was mentioned above in another post, and it reminded me of how great this scene is. Here we truly see the 'wounded soilder' pleading with his Maker to acknowledge what he has acheived. It is a poingent moment in some respects...and no matter how naughty CLU has been earlier in the game now one cannot help but feel pity for him.
Now CLU 1.0...he was very loveable. Almost a nerdy computer geek lovable-ness.
CLU just rules....no matter what side of his persona you like.

Don't forget the ISOs coming onto the scene. Now Flynn admires them, leaving poor Clu left out once again, probably feeling like the ugly stepsister. He just can't win against so much competition, so he chooses to eliminate it all.

Ah yes... oh course! I can just imagine CLU finally getting to be with Kevin again after his absence and then, just when things start to get back to normal, BOOM, here come the ISOs strolling into town! CLU really behaved like he was a spoiled little older child who did'nt want to share 'Daddy' with anyone else.
