Japan have frequent earthquakes but nothing on this scale, the last one like this was the Kanto Earthquate in the 1920s (1929 I think??) that was a 7.9 Scale earthquake and killed a lot of people. It it was just the Earhtquake I believe the damage would not have been as great but a combination of the Earthquake and Tidalwaves have caused massive damage

My prayers are with them, of course.
One thing about Japan. These guys have had quite a history of hardships, but also has an amazing history to quickly rebuild, repair, and come back even greater than before.
I'm glad you guys mentioned Japanese honor. There haven't been any reports of looting in the country since the quake, and everyone seems to be acting in the best orderly fashion. I don't believe there's been any reports of riots (none that I've read about).
Japan should be the world's role model for common courtesy, common respect, and just self and neighborly honor.

We just heard back from our friends in Japan they are all okay, a few of them had not long moved to the west of Tokyo. At our Iaido dojo we are going to host a seminar in the UK and donate our profits to the relief fund. I, too have Japan in my thoughts and hope for the best for them. A lot can be learned from the culture and history of Japan. I wish them a thorough recovery.
