If Sam was 12 years old when Kevin Flynn disappeared in 1985, and he is now 27, then that would be a 15 year difference. Which means that Tron: Legacy took place in 2000.

So basically, all of our complaints about how the technology doesn't make sense are now thrown out the window.
Take into consideration the fact that in 1982, Encom has the technology to digitize material objects and send them onto the Grid. The technology that the world in Tron has is extremely advanced for their time.

The actor who portrayed Sam was 12, but in 1989, Sam would have been 6 or 7.

For Sam to have been 12 in 1989 would require him to have been born in '77. It's fairly clear that Kevin had no family in the original Tron.

We saw "young" Sam for like a total of ten minutes. How much acting did he need to do? All they needed to do was track down whoever the equivalent of Haley Joel Osment is these days and use that kid. Rather than a kid several years older than Sam was supposed to be, who looks nothing like what you would expect a young Garrett Hedlund to look like (did they even have the same eye color??).

Well, Sam was 6 years old in 1989 (as he was born in 1983, one year after the events of "TRON"), and he is 27 years old when Quorra asked how old he was (and Flynn confirmed it) during the dinner scene. So, there's a 21 year difference between the opening scene and the jump foward. So, it would be

1989
+ 21 (rounded from the numbers on the timer on Flynn's computer when Sam finds it)
=2010 (the same year the film came out)

Never said anyone else was a loose cannon save Sam. LIke, what did he do when he wasn't making the once a year visit to ENCOM? And he had to be getting stock checks or something, since he seemed to have enough money for what counted to him. Not like Alan was checking up on him anymore, his saying it had been a year or two since they'd last spoken?

Personal note: I live alone and have a bird, so basically yeah, and not a loose cannon, dammit! Kinda wish I was. ;-)

The events in the Original Tron do take place in 1982.

However, Sam is born in 1983. Flynn disappears in 1989, Sam is six years old at the time. Sam sees his dad 21 years later, in 2010.

So, no, I'm afraid he is not 12 at the time of his father's disappearance. The actor playing young Sam looked 12 to me, though, I'd have made the same mistake.

Besides, not to harp on your math, but *IF* he was 12 in 1989, that would make him 33 years old in 2010, not 21 as you suggested.
