my disc collection

on Wednesday, February, 23, 2011 4:37 AM
Hopefully I'll have time to take some better pics this weekend, but I couldn't wait to show off my modded disc collection I finished up tonight.

Classic discs:

The heros:

The villians:

All together:

What does everything think?

The green one is a blue one with different LEDs. Just like the red & yellow ones are the orange discs with different LEDs.

There's a number of other mods to the discs such as an always on light mode & better light blocking through the white plastic on the Kevin disc. Both the Kevin & Sam discs have integrated USB memory sticks (and the C ring lights flash when data is being accessed). Of course, all the original toy functions are maintained including sound. Finally, each disc has a custom color-coded stand that's about the same size as the original but solid and far less flimsy.

So you got two blue disks, and three orange ones, took them apart, and put different colored LEDs in?where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill onlineabortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

Awesome! Are you using standard green LED's for the green disc? In my experience, green LED's have a "lime" color, whereas yours has the accurate Tealish color. Is that a result of the green LED's coming through the blue tinted material?

The actual color of the green disc is a little more bright green in real life (IMO) but the picture washes it out a little. I suppose I could have searched for a more teal colored LED but the surplus place I bought my parts from had a good deal on the only 3mm green LED they sell so I went that way.

And for the record, yes I know that the actual Rinzler disc has a white ring... as it seems all the discs do but I didn't want to gut my un-opened stash of Kevin discs just to build these. Besides that, in some of the posters you see CLU with an all-yellow disc (both rings) even though in the film he had a white ring. Using red for Rinzler is also a judgement call as to me it and a lot of others it looked red while others think it was orange. It certainly wasn't the same orange as the stock toy.

In short, with both the Legacy discs and the Classic discs think of them as my interpretation. Not screen accurate but close enough to be instantly recognized by both die-hard fans and casual viewers alike.

Did you have to recast the plastic rings to a clear transluscent piece? What I mean by that is, wouldn't the blue plastic from Sam's disc affect the green LED's and make it look more Cyan? I'd like to make a yellow Clu disc but I'm afraid it will end up looking green.

Yeah, I'd like to go that route, but those kits are kinda pricey.

I have a stash of Kevin discs but can't quite get myself to rip one apart just for the rings. It took me & my wife weeks of checking multiple Targets multiple times a week for months to ultimately secure about 4 Kevin discs.

Some pics of the custom stands. The pics probably hide a number of imperfections - some air bubbles and some inconsistent mixing of the color. But overall, I'm satisfied at this point:

It's like $100 for a kit. And the amount of LEDs she's using are just going to kill the battery and seem like total overkill to me.

I opened up my Sam disc today and am working on plans on modding it. Instead of using a ridiculous amount of LEDs (60), I'm hoping to make do with 24 Ultra-Bright Aqua Leds. Not sure how the well light from the leds is going to show through the blue outer ring though.
Would using white leds still be better, or does anyone know if blue or aqua ones will work fine?

These modded disc are totally awesome, a propper Tron fan right there!

I have just managed to buy my first Rinzler and Kevin Flynn discs but I can't afford to get any more at the moment. I can't get over how well they are made compared to other weapon toys.

Hah. The back side of Sam's disk is painted WHITE, and they didn't ever consider having an always-on light up feature and the sounds are horrible quality. I don't exactly consider them well made.

They may not be extremely well made, but at least they're easy to mod.

I finally got around to taking some more pics and posting them. They are being served up via my poor little DSL line so please be kind but feel free to poke around.

TRON disc collection

You can also check out some of the pics I took while I was making the discs here:

making a TRON disc collection

I'm fairly busy at work these days, but I will try to respond to everyone that has PM'ed me recently. Just give me a few days. I'm not opposed to making some discs and selling them (though that was not my original intention) but I'd want to make sure we agree to an exact price, the exact work being done (there are many different types of mods), and like I said I'm pretty busy at work (50-60 hours is normal) plus that whole being a father thing...
