TRON Legacy toy Deluxe ID Disc. Mod./Enhancements

on Sunday, January, 30, 2011 8:39 AM
Good morning,
Last night I searched on Google for TRON Forums and came accross this sight.
Today, I am a new member of the grid

Since I am new here, I will give a litte background.... "I build props" and have done so for over 12 years.
My skills are mostly in elecTRONics and some fabrication as well.
I show many of my working props on youtube.
It's sort of a video record of my past and current projects.

My most recent work is shown below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7BuEtyz9JY
But my prize work is my hero disc (link below):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKAGooFpR1I
(please forgive the music, it's the only one youtube hasn't blocked and thanks for looking)

As I have read here, I too am a member of the RPF and have been since 2002.
(Where has the time gone?)

Anyway, it's nice to be here and hopefully for an extended stay

I got some questions for you.

1. How long might the batteries power the disc?
2. Is it possible to make a version to put on the wall?
3. Can you make some copies of it?
4. How much?

I'm asking you because I did not see any merchandising articles in Germany so far. abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

Dude, that is way too cool! Since I am epic fail at modding things like this, I would like to join the others in chiming in:

"Can you make me one? And how much would it cost?"

Since I joined about 2 months ago, I've been asked many times if I will be building anymore of my Hero (Beauty prop) Tron Discs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKAGooFpR1I

As much as I would like to build more of these, it would not be cost effective for me to build anymore.
There is a fair amount of work, parts/labor to modify the disc body which includes creating the internal electronics package. So much so, that the cost would end up being more then most people want to pay for my completed working disc.

Internal structure:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6_HxVjgTac

I'm sure that after 2 months, there are by now, working discs available from other builders, that work just as well and less expensive then mine
Also, I think the discs will be available soon from a replica company anyway.
I think youtube shows a few fan made discs.

i contacted you on youtube about a month ago for prices as MrAdronScott.

I wanted to know how much either

A] the mod kit by itself was, or

B] how much a light disc with the Kit installed was.

i have a disc me and my friends bought and wanted to upgrade it and told him about your kits=)

Hey Propmaster, you got me wondering now, what kind of circuits do you use to make props with? Do you build the board from scratch or do you use something programmable via computer?

CHIME! and . . . I have a question.

Do you think, in your professional opinion, there is any way to just modify the circuits the way they are, straight out of the package, so that they light up in a similar fashion to yours? Or do you have to make a new circuit board? new LED's? etc.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pillwhere to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

Another question that has been asked many times is, will I sell a "kit version"
of my HERO Disc. modifications and electronics?

I guess the question here is what should someone expect to get in a kit
that would save me time and expense and simple enough for a mass
market sale?
It would have to be a kit where I wouldn't be putting in the same amount
of time and money to produce or I'd simply do it myself and sell.
And as I've mentioned, that is not going to happen.

All of the modifications to the interior of the disc to accept the electronics
"package", would have to be done by the kit builder with fairly close tolerences.

http://www.angelfire.com/ca5/oldman562/tron_disk_mod.html?01
The electronics are a whole nother matter:
I am not sure very many could make the entire electronics package for this modification
or they would already be building it themselves...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPtl2oswZqg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6_HxVjgTac
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKAGooFpR1I
There are 72 LED's (all soldered and wired individually to the control circuit boards)
with 9 shift registers and master control circuit.
All of which need to be made to exact proportions of the interior disc body after
modification. Then an interior "light diffusing ring" (machined
out of clear acrylic) would have to be made to properly distribute the light from the 16 LEDs to the 2 center "C" rings .
It would not really be much of a time saving kit if I did the interior "Light Diffusing
Ring" with the 16 LEDs and the outer 56 LED ring electronics and circuit board.

So, I think a Tron HERO Disc KIT would not be a practical time saver to pursue
at this time........I just don't have the time to do even half the build for kit production.

If there are any ideas as to how this can be practical for everyone, post some ideas here.

Props to Propmaster. Excellent work. I have to say, yours is the Holy Grail of Disc mods.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKAGooFpR1I
I did check the link you suggested for other modded disc. Not bad, what they have to offer.
http://orpex.blogspot.com/p/home.html

I believe their price for a fully modded disk is around $250 + disc. I see they have 2 Kevin discs for about $46.00 each. I'm still confused by the pricing. They do sell a kit, which seems the way to go.

I think you have to ask yourself if there is a market for your Hero Disk. This item could be the new Light Saber of the toy/replica business. We'll have to see when the Tron Franchise takes us. A strong third movie might do the trick.

Is there a way to get the same effect, but for a lower cost per unit. Can you use existing but modified components and have the same effect.

You could go as far as you want. You could even find third party vendors to construct the individual parts for assembly. But, again, is there a market for this. By the way, what would be your realistic per unit price as of now. I'm currious.

Thanks cool83

Another concideration when I started to design my TRON Disc, was the rings 56 LEDs and how I was going to mount them. I wanted to get the "best use" from their light output.

Since I wanted them to have the best viewing angle, I needed to have them spaced far enough away from the outer ring and still have space for the 16 "C" ring leds in the middle. The battery supply was also a big part of the design. I wanted to be able to change batteries easily enough and not wait to charge rechargables, while on the fly....

It also needed to be very clean and well crafted with not alot of wires showing.
So I designed and etched 2, double sided, very thin boards to hold all the LEDs
in place around a center machined acrylic plexy ring (this helped to hold the LED rings
in place, while diffusing the 16 center "C" leds).

I guess I could come up with a different way to light the LEDs (then I am doing now), by going with the ROWS and COLUMN routine (which the builder would have to solder up themselves), using several strands of wire, point to point, anode to anode, cathode to cathode way, connected to an LED driver matrix and microcontroler.
Much the same way I have seen other disc done up to this point.

I suppose I could put all the LEDs in a bag along with the Driver IC and pre-programmed microcontroler, a row and column wiring diagram and a video showing how I would do it and sell that as a kit....The workmanship would be as clean as they would want to make it themselves.

The LED holders could be anything from gluing them directly to the rings, or to a peice of circular cardboard. It would be their choice. Of course, they would have to decide if they want both of the "C" rings lit and purchase an "after market" ring online and cut open the back of the disc.

The whole project is a fair amount of work to make it function and look professional.

Man, that sounds like a lot. It also seems that others made several mods, just to make the mods to work. I saw one builder who wired everything in a loop to better use power. It was a lot of wires though. It seems the other group you you pointed us to has got the jump on parts and mod kits. Like I said, the big question is, is there a market for your disk or mod kit. Be nice to see one of your "Hero Disks" at Disney. In a display case at the exit/gift shop of the Tron ride (crossing finger). You know, you could always get a patent for improvement of an existing product. You could then sell your idea to the original maker, or a new vendor, for mass production. They would be set up for mass production. You need vendors that can produce each part of your build. Have contacted the original toy maker? They may be asses about it, or they may be helpful. If they want to see it, do NOT send it without an improvment patent. You need to protect your idea. abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

I want to expound on this idea a little bit, hopefully not to derail anyone looking to make money from their mods. If this is a problem for you, Propmaster2000, Please let me know. For those wanting to follow/join in a mindshare effort to improve on these already cool props then i'll make another thread.

Thoughts?

One other thing that I had to consider was the "look" of the LEDs shining through
the outer ring. I wanted to limit the LEDs bright "hot spots" which are seen when the LEDs are to close to the diffuser.
So, I had to place the outer ring of 56 LEDs the furthest away from the ring, as space would allow.
Of all the other disc designs I have seen up to this point, you can see the LED "hot spots" around the ring.....
To me, it looses some of the "realism" if you can see the led's and what makes the ring "glow".

Spacing the LEDs far enough away, gave me the best "glowing effect" possible, but it took away alot of the room needed for the circuitry and battery supply.
So, I had to design special boards to hold the LEDs, shift registers and control circuit.

It was truely worth the extra work however:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKAGooFpR1I
Also, I have seen where some of the modifications have multiple LED scanning FX and sound, which to me, still makes it seem toy like.
Instead of using the time to make the Disc look more realistic (inside and out) as a well made prop, their spending it on show. But some people like alot of show. Theres nothing wrong with that. I'm just from a different school of thought......

as far as the Shift registers go, did you end up using the 74HC595 8bit registers?

I have an idea on using the "button-side" disc half, from two discs, and merging them together to make it another step closer to the movie prop. This also provides an additional light ring so both sides will look identical. Now to fasten the two halves together neodymium magnets will be epoxied to either one or both sides. The side with out magnets will have little metal plates epoxied in place for alignment. Doing it this way will effectively remove the speaker grill/battery door/on-off switch/raised lettering/screw holes while providing a clean surface without having to manually grind excess plastic away. I've done this already and it needs a few mods to get it to fit like it does with the half containing the battery compartment (grind away enough material so you create a shoulder for one half to nest in). I'll post pics when I finalize electronics.

I plan to use the Arduino Pro mini as the LED driver:
http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9218

Since there aren't enough PWM contacts for the amount of LEDs needed we'll need to use shift registers to extend the signal. (also ordered socket holders to clean up the install)
http://www.taydaelectronics.com/servlet/the-1904/74HC595-8-bit-Shift/Detail

Here's a site that has a tutorial on using these shift registers and an arduino, with example code.

I might be interested in buying one of these when I have the cash. One question though, can it be made combat durable?

I don't mean for throwing them around, but, do you think the circuitry is durable enough for dueling? Though I suppose it could be toughened up by immersing it in silicone, but that would also make it unserviceable, so... heh.abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion
