My girlfriend and I were a little confused with a small time line detail in the movie. I'm not sure if we missed something here but I figured you guys may be able to help.
Was it 1982 when Kevin Flynn and TRON, triumphed over the MCP?
If it was 1982, then proceed to the next detail below.
Alright, so about 7 years have passed since and it is now 1989 in the movie, Tron Legacy.
Kevin is having a few words with his son Sam who is 12 years old, correct?
Then later, assuming in the same year of 1989, Kevin dissapears and Sam runs off into the rain.
Finally, the year is 2010, or I assume it was, when Sam, who is now 27 years old (who should be around 21 years old, if he was 12 in 89), got zapped into the grid.
I don't get it. Whats the real time line here because from what I measured up, it doesn't quite make any sense. Also, I had no idea Kevin Flynn was married or had a son back in 1982 when he was fooling around the old grid with Sark. 0.o

The events in the Original Tron, do take place in 1982.
However, Sam is born in 1983. Flynn disappears in 1989, Sam is six years old at the time. Sam see his dad 21 years later, in 2010.
So, no, I'm afraid he is not 12 at the time of his father's disappearance. The actor playing young Sam looked 12 to me, though, I'd have made the same mistake.
Besides, not to harp on your math, but *IF* he was 12 in 1989, that would make him 33 years old in 2010, not 21 as you suggested.

RIGHT! I meant to say around 32-33, which is what my gf said, since im the same age myself. Where 21 came from, I have no "Clu". 
Well.. you're definitely right. The kid certainly did not look 6 in the movie.
I wonder where the number 12 came from to begin with. I will have to ask my gf again.
I'd better pay more attention to the film this Wednesday. I was too caught up with the excitement of seeing a Tron film in theater, I may have over looked a few other details.
Can't wait for this to hit Blueray.

You're probably remembering the number 12 because that's when Sam says his first grandparent died. But it was meant to be some years after Flynn disappears.

Yes, I would've guessed 10-12 as well. I actually brought it up to my partner the day after we saw it--"but wait, if he is 27 NOW, then he should've been, like, 6 or 7 in the beginning of the movie, not 11..."
I mean, that's not my only beef with the actor they picked for young Sam, but oh well. (Why'd they pick a kid with brown curly hair to play someone who grew up with blond straight hair? I understand that hair color can change as a person grows up [mine did, though not that drastically but I know people who went from blond to solid brown] and even on rare occasion texture can change, but it just can't be that hard to pick a kid more believable, esp. since he only actually shows up for like 10 minutes of the movie...)
