Greetings, programettes! Happy International Women's Day! I've been meaning to talk about this for a while anyway, so we might as well do it today.
But first: considering that we may have driven home, by ourselves, in cars that we personally own, from our outside-the-home jobs where we make money we can do whatever we want with, possibly wearing pants, to homes we may own or rent in our own names, which are filled with the number of children (or lack thereof) that we desire, and a significant other that we may or may not have by our own choice and who probably wouldn't dream of lifting a hand against us but if he did (if indeed our significant other is male but we are free to have one who is not) we could kick the shit out of him in self-defense and then throw him out of our lives and can divorce him if we so choose (if we chose to get married in the first place because we didn't have to) but who may cook US dinner tonight...and the billion other things we can do because someone else went there first...let's salute the ones who did go there first, work alongside the ones who fight with us because we still have a long way to go, and stand with the ones who are still waiting for their basic rights and to be treated like a human being.
Okay, so, anyway, back on topic. I've been thinking of the role of women in the Grid, and I think it's great that it seems in the new Grid at least, female programs can be equal to male programs (in the Encom Grid, I dunno...seems Yori may have been a token female more than anything, but, sign of the times I suppose). We have Quorra, who kicks a lot of ass. And while it's been debated in other threads just how strong of a character she may be, the fact still remains that the writers weren't afraid to show her rescuing Sam on several different occasions or moving to defend him (in this way she much reminds me of Tron and the way he instinctively fought to protect Flynn). She has the cojones to allow herself to be captured by Clu, and when she is, she is treated like any prisoner for the most part, rather than like a FEMALE prisoner. There's no apology for her character being strong, no need to put in stereotypical female actions like crying, having baby rabies, etc. Her role could just as easily have been male if the writers hadn't wanted to have the Sam-Quorra attraction angle in there.
Now mind you, I wish there had been more strong female roles, though i realize there were only a few main character parts in there and at the very least, Flynn, Tron, and Clu absolutely had to be male. (Would have been interesting if Sam had been Samantha, but that may've changed the story dynamic as sometimes the father-son relationship is different than the father-daughter relationship, and moreover, audiences might've EXPECTED the relationship to be different--hard to have a movie if some of the viewers are whining that there's no "Daddy's little princess" theme I suppose.) May have been nice to see some female Black Guards, or other female conscripts in the Games.
But it started me thinking--really, there is no need for gender roles on either Grid, right? Besides the fact that there really aren't reasons for traditional male/female roles anyway--there's no reproduction, no hunting/gathering, no cooking or laundry to do, so programs can't be separated into tasks that way. In the Encom Grid, with programs having specific users they resembled, it makes sense that there are far fewer female programs as there are far fewer female programmers (even now). There can be more females on the "new" Grid. But either way, it remains that a program is written to fulfill a specific goal, and the program's sex/gender doesn't matter, nor have anything to do with that role, just as it doesn't for a programmer--a sysadmin is a sysadmin and has the same duties regardless of whether that sysadmin needs a bra. To that end, for that matter, I would argue that there is no reason for female programs to be physically weaker than male programs on the Grid--in an arm-wrestling match, technically Quorra or Gem should be just as able to beat Tron or Clu as Sam or Castor would be. Physical strength of a program would likely be more related to its actual function, and the strength of the coding, not the program's apparent sex/gender.
So all that aside...if female programs on the Grid aren't probably physically weaker, and aren't considered to be relegated to jobs like mommying and cooking, then it makes sense to me that a female user or program on the Grid would be treated the same as a male user or program. There probably isn't nearly the patriarchy mindset among male programs as there is among real-world men. If you or I went to the Grid, there is no reason Tron wouldn't expect us to train up as well with a disc or lightcycle as any of the guys here, to do the same things, etc., except as far as natural athletic, intellectual, whatever ability goes in the individual person.

I love her confrontation scene with Clu. She doesn't show fear or back down, but tells him to his face what she thinks of him. You go, girl!
Yori seemed to be in charge of the solar sailer project. And she did know how to fly it. She did seem a bit weak when Sark had captured her, but she was mourning Tron whom she thought had died. But when Flynn saved her, she jumped right back in and helped him out.
I noticed few female programs except in the bar. And the Sirens.

Well, maybe more girls will appear in Tron 3. But until then, we cheer for Lora, Yori, the sirens, Quorra, Radia, and any other females who show up in the movies/games/books/etc.

I did notice something about the relationship between Sam and Quorra, or maybe its just Sam's lack of manners. When they've just jumped from the Command ship with the wings on, just after Sam says "made it", he gets up and starts towards Flynn,. He doesn't even offer his hand to Quorra who is left on the ground. Now feminism means she doesn't need his help to get up but really, would it have killed him to help her up after such a fall? Well honestly I'm not really into the feminist movement. Don't get me wrong--I love the fact that I can vote and have a job and whatnot, but I don't really agree with the whole women should be capable alone. I don't think there should be a push for anyone to try to be alone, that's no good. Now, I know I'm also quite traditional, but I appreciate guys who are chivalrous, I don't have a problem with a guy being the "head" of the household (which does NOT mean boss around everyone and do nothing for them, it's a leader, a head, not a slavemaster), and I fully and freely admit that in general an average girl will be shorter, less muscular, etc than an average guy (again--average; clearly particular women can whoop particular men), and so, yes, I think Sam could have helped her up.
My two bits.

Or she could have helped him up, just to be fair. It seemed to me not to have one help the other, made a relationship beginning seem less apparent.

Yeah. One of them should have helped the other, doesn't really matter which.

I just can't think of anything else interesting to write. We've discussed our favorite characters, delved into who may be able to kick whose ass, posted all our favorite hot guys, Tron-related or no, briefly discussed fashion and makeup in the movie/on the Grid, talked about feminism on the Grid...I'm out of ideas. Also, we've lost a lot of the folks who were originally posting here as well.
Along the makeup vein, though...I'm still waiting for an excuse to try out Gem's eye makeup (that isn't just me sitting at home wasting eyeshadow to play around). Our second viewing of the film at the theater would've been perfect, except it was impromptu--we were there to watch something else and spontaneously made the decision after the other movie.
I wonder, though...is black eyeliner ubiquitous on the Grid, or does it just so happen that the female character we see most wear it? (I suppose this is another of those topics that would get me flamed elsewhere on the forum, as well as bring out all the "it's just a movie, stop thinking about it!" naysayers, lol) But it's a good question...at least for black-eyeliner-lovers like me.
Oh, and because I'm safe to say it here, at least... *sob* Tron!
I am on pins and needles waiting for the screencap thread to get to the flashback-Tron point. JUST WAITING.
Okay, for the hell of it...
I was reading back over some of the old posts in this thread:
psyence53 Wrote:Kapa One-Eko Wrote:Quorra! Those eyes *_* |
I KNOW, RIGHT! I kept waiting for her to look up! Her eyes were enchanting... hypnotising....
|
And while we're talking about eyes on women (or men, if you can think of some that fall into this category)....is anybody else just totally unable to get over Milla Jovovich's eyes? Every movie I see her in...honestly, I would probably think she was only slightly pretty EXCEPT her eyes are just really striking, unusual, like, not like anybody else's that I've seen (If the color is contacts, don't tell me). (I tend to have a thing for people who are "different" looking or striking...sometimes I'll find a dude attractive just because of that, even though he's not really good-looking) What do you want? Yeah, I imagine they are too (although I reserve the right to think they can take their clothes off. ). Users probably have a bit more leeway, though...Flynn does change clothes in T:L, after all.
Okay, so, ridiculously geeky. Re these earlier posts:
Kat Wrote:Damn, now I'm kinda stuck, though. Came up with a great idea for a snippet of when Elyse is old and looking back, but that means I need to figure out what exactly happens with the Grid long-term...does it never take off? Do Sam and Quorra indeed change the world, in which case how do I write my little clip to reflect that? (I don't really want the whole project to fail, but it'd be way too much work to imagine what the world would be like if it didn't. If I could only think of a way to end it sort of gracefully without having to make it a "and so it never worked out" thing that wouldn't also take a bunch of explanation to ruin what I have in mind.) What happens to all the programs when the hardware and software become obsolete, do they all just get upgraded? And if so and the Grid (and Tron) is still going, then why is old Elyse sitting listening sadly to a recording of "Carrickfergus" and thinking about Tron--did she cut out from the relationship when she started getting old and wrinkly and he didn't? (ugh, I hate to do that sort of thing now that Stephenie Meyer has ruined that particular scenario, but I have to just not think about it if that's the route I want to go; it's not like it's a dilemma that is exclusive to Twilight but still.)
Oh well. I have a whole day of filing at work to spend worrying about it, lol. Might as well have my brain doing something interesting. |

Kat Wrote:Okay, I figured out my clip with Elyse being an old lady, yay. It's really sad (damn me for having that depressing-ass song on my mind, but I've been planning on singing it for an audition so it's been stuck in my head for two days straight so far). I'd post it but it's almost 4 pages so it's a bit much for here (hence why i think we need our own fanfic thread!).
|
So, uh, the concert at which I have to sing the aforementioned song is this weekend...and...I think about this little story bit I wrote to get into the mood to sing it. how dorky is that? Luckily the choir director, who also is playing piano for me for this because she loves the song, has no idea.
(I keep writing fanfic around songs. I'm punching up one about Flynn/Clu to "Wild Horses," have a couple very short clips about Elyse/Tron to parts of "With or Without You" and "Faithfully," have written a movie scene to go with my fanfic around "Sing Me To Heaven," worked in a piece with select verses of "Hallelujah," and have in my head another movie scene with "To Make You Feel My Love." Oh, and came up with an idea the other day to have another Elyse/Tron one with "Con Te Partiro." And that is what you get when you cross a music geek with a writing geek.) What do you want? I'm busy.

Well... since I have nothing else to say....my fave guy-programs are:
ORIGINAL--
1. RAM
2.Tron
3. Kevin. (not a program but still)
4.Clu
LEGACY--
1.Sam(I honestly think there's a connection between Ram and Sam's names.maybe I'm just weird...)
2.Rinzler
3.Clu2
4. Tron even though he didnt do much...order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pillabortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion <3 Re-Rez RAM! <3
