how much power does it take to open the gate to the tron world?

on Monday, December, 27, 2010 11:05 AM
There is debate on this website on how much time goes by in the tron world. If you take the quotes from the movie they say a 1000 cycles have pasted since the last time the gate was open. Since it can only be opened from the outside world.

Then Keven Finn was telling his son Sam that the gate only is open for one Millicycle or about eight hours. Therefore if you do the math it comes out to be 50 cycles goes by in the tron world for every year in our time. (1000/20 years= 50 cycles per year)

If you take that 50:1 ratio and figure it out in comes to one millicycle in their time would = 10 munites and 30.72 seconds in our time or 8 hours in the tron world.

My queston is How much power does it take to open the gate to the tron world? Because if you are useing hugh amounts of power in our world to keep this gate open for 10.5 minutes, don't you think that it would have been noticed by the power companies?

Don't you think they would have investigated the power dain on their grid?

I always took this quote to mean huge amounts of power inside the computer world. An average PC or server doesn't use a whole lot of electricity. When Flynn says it takes massive amounts of power, I took that to mean that for the time the laser is active and able to transport someone back and forth, the server(s) may be clocking at peak performance levels. Memory too. Thus, for the computer world, power expenditure is quite high during the 8 hours the window is open.

Now, as to why Flynn's workshop retained power when the entire arcade is switched off... who knows. Perhaps Flynn has the basement workshop on an entirely different circuit, with the bill going straight back to ENCOM every month? Given ENCOM's size as a company, it's not too far fetched to suggest that a monthly bill like that gets lost in ENCOM's gross corporate overhead -- especially if Flynn left behind instructions for Finance to keep paying the bill no matter what happens.

Well I quess it all depends on how much energy it takes to digitize physical matter into pure electrons. Since that is all you would be in a digital world. Or maybe its would be Star Trek energizes that transport you from one place to another. Of coarse how you transfure 100's of trillions of Atoms in the human body into pure energy is beyond me! Where would the Protons and neutrons that make up an Atom go? Because physics says if you spite an atom hugh amounts of energy would be released.

So the fact is a Laser pointed at you that was trying to digitize you would probable cause you to blow up, insted of be digitized.

Besides even if it was posable to do this. I would think it would take a great deal of power to reconstruct a physical form. Let alone into a living form.

Im an Aussie electrician, supplies here tend to be three phase and much larger than yours in the US to each premises.

I'll use my limited knowlege of US LV reticulation then, and assume (by the look of the FPE breaker board upstairs at the Arcade) that the supply into there from the street would have been a US style 115/230 single phase centre tapped supply with mains around the 100A mark, which if a 230v load was connected across the two actives this would give you around 24kW. There's little evidence the arcade was airconditioned so that's enough I guess.

That's not much compared to here where you would have a 3phase 240/415 supply at about 80A/phase, giving you a capacity of around 72kW, where air conditioning here for commercial buildings is almost mandatory.

So there you are. Your answer is 24kW (Max). I would assume that would only be drawn during the actual transformation, not all the while the port is open which basically is nothing more than similar to an IP port being open.

I think Flynn set up a private,back-up power generator to power the server and/or the digitization laser system. In the film you can hear the sound of the generator "reving up"/charging up once the laser is switched on, and Sam gives a look like " what was that?"

Alan probably made sure the arcade still had electricity and was paid for by Encom but unknown to the members of the board...

One problem, I can't find Oz anywhere on the map, so how can there be a wizard from there?

No on knows, and it's not really that important.

It's sort of like asking "how much energy is required to make the Palantier orb in Lord of the Rings to work?"
