Note: May contain spoilers for Tron Legacy!
Well, I can't find the last Tron: Uprising thread and the Search function doesn't seem to work on the board... so I thought I'd start a catch-all thread for Tron: Uprising info.
Cast:
Bruce Boxleitner: Tron
Elijah Wood: Beck
Emmanuelle Chriqui: Paige
Mandy Moore: Mara
Paul Reubens: Pavel
Nate Corddry: Zed
Lance Henriksen: Tesler
Reginald VelJohnson: Able
Crew:
Exec. Producer/Director: Charlie Bean
Consulting Producers: Adam Horowitz & Edward Kitsis
UKNOWN: Justin Springer
Format:
10-part micro-series Fall 2011 followed by a full series in Summer 2012 on Disney X D
Summary:
"Produced by Disney Television Animation, the series follows Beck, a young program who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid. His mission is to free his home and friends from the reign of the villainous Clu and his henchman General Tesler. Beck will be trained by Tron - the greatest warrior the Grid has ever known. Tron will not only teach Beck the fighting skills he needs to challenge this brutal military occupation, but will be a guide and mentor to him as he grows beyond his youthful, impulsive nature into a courageous, powerful leader. Destined to become the new protector of the system, Beck adopts Tron's persona and becomes the archenemy of Tesler and his oppressive forces."

To start off, there is some new info emerging on it from the writers here:
http://www.boxofficemagazine.com/articles/2010-12-tron-legacy-screenwriters-on-stars-story-of-the-upcoming-tv-series
When asked whether the animated series will be part of the continuity of the films, Kitsis said, "Absolutely. And we're treating it very seriously." He explained that the events of the show will take place in between the events of TRON and TRON: Legacy. "This animated show will take place from when Flynn is in a safe house. It's from when Clu takes over the grid to before when Sam comes in. So if you were wondering what was the grid like before that, then watch the show." |
I'm not usually thrilled with prequels. I mean, we kinda know how things will turn out, right? Obviously whatever uprising is started against Clu it can't be too succesful! But the idea of expanding on the Tron universe is too tantalizing!
He also suggested that some of the stories might piggyback on preliminary ideas that he and Kitsis developed for the film that didn't make it into the final cut. "To give you an example of how we approached storytelling sometimes is like when you're in the End of Line club, when we first meet Castor and he's being berated by one of the patrons saying, ‘I want an audience with Zuse.' His name is Bartik, and there's an entire back story we have for him. The guy with him, his name is Hopper, there's a whole thing between the two of them, what they are doing in there, and how they got there. It's like over the years of developing this movie, we developed all these mythologies and all these back stories and all little tangential things." |
Now THIS sounds really cool. I actually found Bartik to be very memorable visually (how cool was that scar!) and I'd like to know more. Although, again, we know how his story ends...
BUT, Bruce is voicing Tron so hopefully Tron will be a big presence. There are a lot of things it could touch on. Like, where is Yori?

Hmmmm, interesting. But we see in both the movies and the games that Tron is hurt/killed/captured/whatever right when Clu takes over. If that's the case, how can Tron teach this guy when it takes place during a time after that? I wonder if the animation will look like what we see in the Wii game. Kind of like Clone Wars or something. I'm not very fond of that style, but it wouldn't be too terrible.

To be air what we saw was a montage/flashback - and it did appear that Tron was "turned" just as CLU took over, but - perhaps TRON trained BECK before all of that went down - and the series takes place AFTER TRON becomes RINZLER?

I think Tron managed to escape after that flashback scene. Tron was probably defeated and captured to be "rectified" sometime after...

It wasn't a flashback in Evolution, it was currently happening. Since Tron was training Anon and whomever is in the PSP game, I wonder just how much time he would have to train yet another program during all that. If he was only injured and somehow got away, maybe he could train someone while trying to hide and recover. Maybe the series will show just how he becomes Rinzler.

Yeah, I thought that was a bit strange as well. The only thing I could think of - as has been stated - is that Tron actually escaped and was training Beck for some time before being turned. It actually makes you think the cartoon COULD be kinda dark at the end. Maybe Beck defeats Tesler but Clu would still be ruling the Grid and Tron would be captured and turned. I mean, I'd be a LITTLE surprised if that's how it ended. Since the full Uprising series isn't happening until 2012, it makes me wonder if after Tron 3 (assuming that happens) the second series of Uprising might not pick up the story of Beck after the first movie or something. Huh. Who knows. I suppose I'm getting a bit ahead of myself! The micro-series doesn't even air until next year! And I guess it kind of depends on the box office success of Tron Legacy before they decide to show the full series. Still, it seems like if they are already producing it we'll probably see it.

To be honest i don't see the full series happening, i think they'll show the micro-series which won't go down well then not bother with the full thing. The micro-series is obviously being done as a testing stage to see if it will work and probably as a promotional tool for the DVD/BluRay release of Legacy (and hopefully the first movie). It just seems like Disney is trying to market Tron to the wrong age group, rather than kids it should be aimed at a 16-24 age range. It kinda sucks because they're throwing a lot of money into the kids side of everything with books, toys, and this, but it just doesn't feel like the right target audience to me. I know when i saw Legacy anyway there was no one below 16 in the audience. I just hope that if it all fails it doesn't discourage them from continuing the franchise.

Hmmm... I've had the opposite experience. There were a ton of kids in the showings I've gone to and quite a few looking at the toys in the aisles. I guess it just goes to show anecdotal evidence doesn't really amount to much. But being interested in the movie and being interested in an animated series are two different things. It's hard to say how it'll go.

Full Series of Tron: Uprising has been greenlit! The series will air in 2012. This is awesome news. Why? Because it means that Disney is still behind the franchise even if the box office has been just "okay" for the movie.

I wouldn't take this as a "green light" for anything because it sources back to the interview from the second post, some places are just taking this as meaning it's 100% happening.

Well, he just had a scar. He was in Castor's bar. You also see a little more of him in the comic on the official magazine.

About the Tron conundrum: if you read the epilogue for Tron Betrayal, it clearly shows that Tron survived the fight with Clu and the Black Guard, but he was heavily damaged and had to flee once he knew Flynn got away safely. It seems that Tron Uprising focuses on Tron training Beck because Tron himself knows that he is in no shape to lead the resistance against Clu and Tesler.
Of course, the predictions made regarding his eventual capture and rectification into Rinzler are undoubtedly going to come true.

Ah, good call. I'd forgotten that. I wonder how long the "micro-series" is going to be. I don't really understand that. Hey, Jon, you might want to edit your character/actor listing. You switch from character/actor to actor/character after the first two. Just a heads-up.

You didn't know that Tron was playing Bruce Boxleitner in the new show?
