I think word-of-mouth is what's driving TRON during this strong weekday run. Both where I work and in my circle of acquaintences, TRON has been getting lots of buzz -- both for the pure spectacle and because a lot of people genuinely liked the film as a story.

I agree about WOM. People on sites like boxofficemojo.com keep saying the film has bad word of mouth... even though every user rating on sites across the net give it good marks. I just don't get it. People want to be down on Tron for whatever reason, but general audiences do really seem to be connecting to it.

Man the hipsters in your area must be totally different than the ones in mine. I am in my late twenties, but have friends all over that spectrum some are those "hipsters". Well they are the cool hipsters and not the posers. Any ways so many of my twenty something friends have seen or will be seeing Tron Legacy.

On the midnight showing I went to there was a huge majority of twenty somethings I was really surprised. Early reports peg Tron as having risen 20% from Wednesday to Thursday! The other films rose a great deal less.

Now again, these are VERY early reports but if the numbers hold the top three for Thursday will look like this:

Little Fockers: 7.3m
Tron Legacy: 6.7m
True Grit: 5.8m

Can you imagine if Tron Legacy beats out Little Fockers for the weekend? You know what I think its possible. Its a PG movie that has lots of good action, and what do families like to do after they open up presents? Watch a movie with the whole family.

The film to look to for box office comparisons is Lemony Snicket, which opened the same day and date in 2004 and then had a Fockers movie open five days later. If TL is to make its money back domestically, it needs at least $85m by the end of the weekend, IMHO.

We'll definitely be in safer territory if we see $100m+ after Sunday. The real question mark is how much Fockers and Gulliver's eat into TL's numbers. Fockers doesn't seem like much of a threat at this point and Gulliver's may yet sink like stone. (Here's hoping, for Swift's sake.)

If you want a vision of things to come watch the movie "Idiocracy". It is a comedy set in a fictional future, but as Gerald Celente says "current events form future trends". May be the "8 oscar winning movie" in the Idiocracy world will actually be made some day.
