I liked very much this take from Box Office Mojo:
http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3017&p=.htm
I'll be curious to see what Saturday's numbers were like, but some of the comparisons and points this article makes are spot-on.
$18 million in a single day is not chump change. If Saturday's numbers were consistent with Friday's, it could shape up to be a $40M+ weekend.
Holy crap, gang, imagine that: TL makes more in its opening weekend than the original made in its entire domestic run?
I've said it elsewhere: I think TL will turn in very respectable domestic numbers, and while absolutely whale overseas. Foreign audiences demand spectacle from American films even more than Americans demand spectacle from American films, and I think TL will serve this up nicely for overseas audiences.
Unless there is a massive foreign AND domestic slump -- highly unlikely -- I think we'll definitely be talking TR3N green-light by April of next year.

As an overseas-type myself, I can gladly say I put my cash toward a 3D session yesterday and loved it. The session was pretty full; not crammed (although we wound up there 10-15 min. early) but a good turnout for a lunchtime session. I think the afternoon / evening ones would have drawn a bigger turnout.
Then again, I live in Cairns, which certainly isn't a major metropolitan centre. I'd like to see the numbers from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane et. al.

Oh whoops didn't see this and posted it in the other thread. It's a great take by someone who does this for a living. I'm actually really encouraged. The thing is, from Disney's perspective this is about re-launching a brand. So although it needs to do well it doesn't have to be Avatar. They are going to make a TON more money already from the merchandising. Then they can extend the brand longevity with the cartoon and plant the seeds for an even bigger opening for the sequel.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pillabortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

Thanks, Sub-Odeon. I just looked back there a few minutes ago, and it seems like TL is gaining some traction. Right now, it's grossed up to just over 1/4 of it's production budget, grossing up to $43, 600, 000 -and that's just the domestic American tally. Combined with foreign box-office, I'm willing to bet it's probably at or above $50,000, 000, and I predict that it will gain more momentum over the next several weeks. While I still have yet to see it, I've been following it close enough to where I know enough to confirm my ideas of how the story plays out.
With many of the reviews I've read (out of curiosity ONLY; I don't put hardly any stock in critics anyway), it amazes me how way-off they seem to be and leads me to pose the following question: Is ADD rampant among film critics? Yes, TRON and it's successor aren't perfect, but from everything I've read, be it interviews, the Flynn Lives ARG, as well as several video clips, and a research project video I'm working on, seems to me that the story, marketing and plot are pretty straightforward. To some of these critics I'd ask:
1)Did you see and understand Spartacus?
2)Did you see and understand The Wizard of OZ?
3)Do you understand uses of metaphor and symbolism, such as the same types EMPLOYED in popular ancient holy books?
It amazes me to think that they'd probably say yes to those 3 questions, but yet still wouldn't be able to understand TRON or the fascination with it.
