Tron Legacy fan made costumes

on Monday, September, 13, 2010 11:21 AM
Hi there,

I am pretty new here and wanted to know how you all felt about posting TL fan made costumes here.

I just made a Quorra costume and didn't want to go posting all my pics here before I asked everyone if it is OK and if you would like to see them.

Please let me know, thanks so much

Hmmmm the photos I have are on my hard drive. I guess I can only post URL links here to my photos? I don't see any way to attach files here.

Ahhh great thank you really appreciate your compliment! Someone else actually asked me about making a male program suit. I don't think it is possible with the materials I used to make Quorra. I really do not think a Sam suit will hold up well with how I made my Quorra suit.

Plus Quorra was alot easier to work with. There is less detailing on her suit, which was lucky for me, easier to make. Sam's suit is definately more interesting of course but it is going to be a pain for anyone to replicate unless they work in the movie industry and/or have a big budget to purchase the materials to make the suit with.

Did you actually use EL tape for your costume? It's absolutely stunning for a fan-costume by the way.

It's great to still see that there's people who put that amount of quality into their costumes. Good work.

Hey Annissë!

I see you made your way over here to the Tron-Sector! Welcome! (Or as they say here at the Sector: "Greetings, Program!" LOL!)

Your Quorra costume looks great! The reflective tape really looks fantastic with the flash! Are you still planning to work in actual lighting into your costume for the movie premiere? That would look totally awesome!

BTW, how did it hold up at DragonCon? I know moving around all day and dancing at night can really take a toll on self-made costumes. So how bad was the damage? LOL!

Once again, welcome! I'm glad you joined up. This is a great community with really friendly members! And thanks again for sharing your costume images with us!

Thank you all for your kind comments. So happy my Quorra costume has received such good response so far, I almost killed myself making that thing on time for Dragon Con but still very bummed I couldn't get the lighting worked out for my suit.

To answer your questions. I only used reflective tape. I purchased 2 inch wide 3M Scothlite 8930 tape which was all cut into the shapes I needed and then super glued (GEL) on to the suit. Many many 99 cent store super glue Gel bottles were used HAHA and lots of stuck fingers my hands were ruined. :P

As for the identity disk I purchased a round piece of styrofoam, used one of those hot knives to cut out the shape, then added craft foam to smooth out the look of the styrofoam then covered the disk with this black matter rubber "look" material I just happened to have from many years ago that I saved. I used this material is make the chest and arm armour as well.

oh and as far as how my suit held up wearing it to DC, the boots I customized need to be repainted. I patterned some black wedge knee hight boots I purchased on Ebay with craft foam. Looked great when done but paint has chipped off on some places. Craft foam is awesome to work with but just too fragile. The chest armour and arm armour are all fine, just a little bendy now from my joint areas from moving and dancing. Oh and I dance my butt off in that thing Sat. night at DC. There is some video in my comments on my FB page ppl have posted of me if you care to have a look

Wish I could afford to make it the way the movie did out of rubber but I am way too broke to have gone down that route, it ain't cheap as you all know.

The reflective tape worked out great for DCon but I still want to figure out which light source will work best for the Tron Legacy suits. So far EL Tape has been sugguested as well as EL Sheets. Then there was Light Tape but I believe is very pricey and I think what was just to make the actual movie suits, Hoodooman, what was the name of that company you mentioned on the RPF? and then this new one a new friend told me about who liked my Quorra costume at DC http://www.e-lite.com

well, let me know what you all think would be a good source for the lighting. I am dying to get it strapped on my suit since it is done now and ready to light up at the movie premiere come Decemeber! I can't wait and hope I can get it to work whatever I wind up using

Thanks again for all your nice compliments on my work!

We all approve the cosplay costumes here at Tron-sector. Here is an idea for you if you haven't already thought of it Annisse. If you have something like photobucket account where you can have it actually linked from there to here. your images will be displayed directly within the message itself. Fortunately there is no way of uploading it here directly to the site itelf. Probably would eat up a lot of hard drive space.

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

Annisse, yes the LightTape folks were pretty outrageous price-wise. I'm afraid the E-Lite people may end up being the same way, as it seems to be virtually the same product, if not the exact same product.

The product that was used in the movie was ELastolite by OryonTech. It had to be specially fabricated for the film, so I'm sure that's prohibitively expensive for our purposes.

What I'm planning on using is custom cut-and-shape EL sheets cut into strips. The site that sells them is http://www.electroluminescence-inc.com/. I like that you can cut them to virtually any shape, and they can be overlaid on one another to create a continuous field of light.

I'm glad to hear your suit held up well, even with the dancing! LOL! I'm a little concerned about my own ideas for a costume because you said craft foam is too fragile. I was thinking of experimenting with several smaller pieces of craft foam as opposed to one large piece for flexibility reasons. I guess I'll just have to test it out and see what happens.

Like Annisse, I'm still searching for other lighting alternatives too, so if anyone has any ideas please feel free to post them.

Great job on the costume Annissë! You've further inspired me to try to put something together myself.

Speaking of which, I wonder if after working hard on a fan made costume, some company releases a licensed legacy costume in October. I don't mean the cool motorcycle gear, but a foam/spandex Halloween costume. The actual filming costumes produced by Quantum Creations FX are made of foam so it seems a natural for a mass produced costume.

Has anyone heard of something like that on the horizon?
