I've been reading discussions on various threads here about the CGI "de-aging" of Jeff Bridges in TRON: Legacy, specifically concerning the scenes of him as CLU 2.0 in the new trailer.
Many of the comments talk about how unrealistic it is, that there's something a little "off" about it, particularly in the area around his mouth when he is speaking.
Some say that this is deliberate, that since CLU is not actually human, it serves the purpose of underscoring this point.
Others say that what is seen in the trailer may not be finished scenes, and that some additional CG touch-up work will probably be done to remove the "uncanny valley" effect, and make it more realistic.
The truth is, we don't know. We'll have to wait until the film comes out to know exactly what the finished product is.
But in the meantime, I found this video online and thought it was pretty interesting. I think it's relevant to the TRON: Legacy discussion since it's the same technology used in the film. It's about a 20 minute talk by Ed Ulbrich from Digital Domain (the visual effects company doing the CGI work for TRON: Legacy) about how they came up with the technology to age/de-age Brad Pitt for his role in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".

So if you have about 20 minutes to kill, check it out. It's pretty cool.

Yes, that clip is pretty cool. Thanks for the link, HooDoo Man. To me, here's some ironic parallels with that clip and TRON/TRON LEGACY:
1)The MCP talked about re-appropriating programs
2)Ed Ulbrich, at about 8:47 into the youtube clip says that they had to re-appropriate other types of code and programs to pull off the effects in Benjamin Button
3)Digital Domain (and presumably Ed Ulbrich) is also behind this same technology in the TRON Sequel.
I started laughing when Ed Ulrbich said they had to re-appropriate code from other software. Maybe Ed is the new MCP, LOL!!!!!!!order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pill Fighting for TRON, The USERS, Both Flynns, Independents, and the mighty ISOs since '82. |

VERY cool video. Talk about your a labor intensive process. Lots of work by humans and computers.
And yup HooDooMan perhaps they're still going through and tweaking ClU's performance to make it more realistic.
It is hard to know, but just watching this video gives you a better appreciation of what they're going through to create Jeff's character in TRON Legacy. where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online

Hey RenegadeProgram, that's a pretty funny point! I hadn't thought about that! It's almost a real-world version of TRON! LOL!
RetroRandy, that's kind of the impression that I have. I'm in awe of how much time, work and resources were needed to accomplish all of that. And I imagine the entire process has been improved since Benjamin Button, so the work for TRON: Legacy will hopefully be even better!
I hope that Ed Ulbrich will go back and do another talk for TED about the work they are doing on TRON: Legacy. I would REALLY be interested in seeing that!order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

Of coures, now they are doing the reverse process from Benjamin Button, de-aging Jeff Bridges instead of aging Brad Pitt.
Does their "process" work in reverse? Did they have to make a head cast of Jeff and sculpt it down? I think Kosinski said they used Against all Odds as their reference point. Did they perform the UV makeup scans to make the hi-res model of Jeff's face?abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

from the video it would be "sculpt it up" since a face loses bulk with age
i thought Benjamin Button was amazing. it looked very good. one thing that may make the process a bit easier in TRON is that they need only one age for Clu, not a whole lifetime
so, yeah, i bet there's a creepy super-life-like young Jeff Bridges bust somewhere

Well Flynn circa 1989... and Clu looking like Flynn from 1989.. talk about meta "immortality" by proxy...

Didn't they already do that in Benjamin Button? (possible Benj Button spoiler below)
SPOILER... Mouse Over To Read:Toward the end of the movie, Brad Pitt's character gets younger and younger... like a 17 year old version of himself. I remember thinking it looked pretty CG'd there. where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online

I seem to remember watching an interview with Jeff Bridges when he talked about walking onto the set one day and seeing a hyper-accurate bust of his head and how he felt a bit weirded out, but really fascinated by it at the same time. So yeah, they did run an ultra high res UV makeup or laser scan of Jeff (and Bruce too, I presume).

Thought this was an interesting tidbit on TRON Legacy from Siggraph 2010 talking about capturing Jeff Bridges and him wearing a helmet with 4 cameras:
http://www.awn.com/articles/3d/siggraph-2010-tron-legacy-and-more/page/1,1
Afterward, I got the chance to follow-up with Barba and Preeg, who discussed the bar-raising potential of Tron Legacy. "The Clu character, right off the bat, because it's a younger version of the Jeff Bridges character, is going to be the most challenging thing we've ever done and certainly having to finish it in 3-D makes it even more challenging," Barba admits. "It means we have to push everything we knew from our Button experience further to try and work as seamlessly."
Indeed, Bridges is the driving emotional force for Clu. But youthening entails fundamental procedural changes at Digital Domain (and no, Bridges did not wear his beard during the capture sessions). "Jeff wanted to act on set with the other actors so we had to come up with a different way to capture his footage," Preeg adds. "We went with the four cameras on the helmet and had to write internal software on how to convert that information of points moving in space to our rig. The rig is very similar to Button's, with a few modifications, updates and changes."
Digital Domain is still grappling with the fundamental issue of age. "As we get older, we don't always move as we did when we were younger," Barba suggests. "As we get older, there are certain patterns that change in our personality. We hold ourselves a little differently. And if you take those fundamental examples, there's a lot of work that has to be done. And if you take into account the body double, who is definitely a younger guy, and did a great job of doing what Jeff did, he's got his own slightly different physiology."
Would LOVE to see the video panel (and the video of them capturing Jeff) of this presentation. I think they sell the DVD on their website.
