PC Build :)

on Wednesday, July, 28, 2010 1:12 AM
Ok.. as a gift from my brother, he acquired a while back an Asus M4A785-M motherboard. Not the one I had my eye on but after reading about it, I am impressed. I'm not able to use it since I still need to buy a CPU, RAM, and HDDs. I do have a case and power supply that I got from one of my local vendors..

Ok.. So this is what I've decided to get for it.

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Thuban 3.2GHz 4000MHz Socket AM3 6-Core 45nm Processor.

Nvidia GTX 490 (not right away. This is just currently an after thought).

8 Gigs RAM (MB only supports DDR2 but I'm not complaining).

Seagate or Westerndigital SATA HDDs (perhaps 2 = 1 terabyte)

I'm only going to get a DVD burner for now. Once they perfect and drop Blu-ray burners to a really affordable price then I'll switch to that. I love optical storage.

Believe it or not, I never owned a flat panel monitor. I might buy something big.

Also, I'm really thinking about getting a new desk and chair. I'm temped into getting the RAT 9 mouse but that may just be too silly of a purchase.

I am going to get a high-end soundcard because I plan on doing some music recordings with my guitar.

All in all, I think it will turn out great. It will be a great gaming system and will give me more than enough system resources for all my other media needs. When I have a powerful computer I use it for EVERYTHING... Literally..

.
..
... Any suggestions or thoughts on this matter will be greatly appreciated and undoubtedly ignored.. lol..

Actually, I'm curious about something. We all are fanboys for what type of tech we invest in. AMD vs Intel, Nvidia vs ATI, etc...

I'd like to hear your thoughts about what you prefer and why.

I can't say I'm a hardware person or a fanboy of any specific brand, but I'm using an ATI card and Intel chip right now.

So if you have trouble deciding, you can take my random suggestions.

But might I recommend checking PC Gamer? They review hardware every magazine issue. I'm sure if you check their scores for some devices (I dunno if they list scores online) and cards, you can find a better suggestion by them. Cheers!

Actually I go to 'Tom's Hardware Guide'. Those guys are great. They provide deep detail reviews and professional hardware benchmarks.

I do like intel and I have a great deal of respect for ATI, but I like AMD processors and N'vidia GPUs. That's kind of a redundant brain-fart for me because AMD now owns ATI.. They are great GFX cards, but I've always stuck to N'vidia.

Intel is still in the lead of power processing. I always wanted a i7 core, but with the pieces I already have, I'm excited about getting the Phenom II x6.

I haven't picked up a PC Gamer mag in a long time. I'll have to remember that when I'm at the book store next time. abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

For me It can be either AMD or Intel. Depends on what you want to do. I am running two clones using Athlon XP 3000+ and a Sempron 64 3000+ on the AMD side and Pentium 4 2.8 and 3.0 with hyperthreading and PIV Xeon's 1.5 dual processor on a Dell over here. I've worked with both of them for CPU usage.

I guess for me personally it depends on what you want to do with the machine itself. Too bad You don't see that many home computers using MIPS or Alpha processors which are RISC base. I have like one SGI O2 from Silicon Graphics that is the only R5000 CPU in there with IRIX on the hard drives.

Wow... I haven't heard about Alpha CPUs in such a long time. Brings back memories of the mid-90s when I use to read about them.

On my end, I'm building a powerful Gaming PC out of what I already have. But doing it at a price I can afford. Plus I have a reputation for building a PC that I can still use 6+ years down the road. Not that it will be compatible with everything but that can still handle most apps that newer PCs would struggle to run.

My last main PC (may it rest in peace) I built back in 2003 and it died in early 2009 due to a storm. I wasn't able to run Bio Shock on it but it still out performed most common PCs (like Dell in the $900 range). I invested about $1500 in it and it was sweet.

When I use a PC it's not just for gaming. I do video editing, 3D rendering, write music, edit photos, test other hardware/software, run different operating systems, etc... mainly because I'm an enthusiast. In fact, I don't really play that many games these days but I do love a good game from time to time.

I like AMD because they do make powerful CPUs but at an affordable price. I also like them due to personal experience. I've never had issues with AMD processors, but I don't believe in overclocking an AMD CPU because it runs allot hotter than Intel's CPUs.

I like N'vidia because of personal experience. They also have a really good reputation for long time driver support. I think they still make drivers that support their old GeForce FX cards. Plus I like how I'm able to configure them. Even if a fan goes out, it's usually not hard to replace (depending on the vendor/manufacture of course).

I normally stick with SoundBlaster only because I'm familiar with them and they do make some of the most highest quality sound cards..

See, we all have our personal preferences. Nothing wrong with that. I don't hate other brands or anything, it's just that I like sticking to what I know. It's hard for a guy like me to change over to something else.. not impossible, just difficult. :P

Thats why I have used them in the past on many a machine over here. Even on a old ibm computer that had a AMD K6-450 on it. and it kept up well over here for several years. Mine are old enough here. But whe the time comes to upgrade them for something else I will but for now they are still goo as for a linux machine and a web server over here.

Is the computer you're building for yourself, Qix? I'm not sure from your message posts, but I get the impression that's the case.

What you're proposing sounds like a pretty sweet build.

For processors, I've been buying AMD for the last few years. I know Intel has the faster chip right now and I've used Intel in the past, but I prefer AMD at this time.

Their latest Phenom II processors aren't much slower in games (if at all) compared to a Core i5 or even i7, and they tend to be cheaper. Also, AMD changes motherboard sockets less often.

Right now I have an Athlon X2 6400+ processor, and eventually I'll probably upgrade to the same Phenom II X6 processor you've chosen. And I'll be able to just drop it into my current motherboard. Replace the video card as well and add some more memory, and I'll have the equivalent of a brand new system that will last me another 3 years. (I last upgraded about 3 years ago.)

For video cards, I've always gone ATI. But I don't know if it'll stay that way, as Nvidia's new GTX 460 shows that they seem to be getting back on the right track. (And I nearly bought an 8800GT last time.) I guess I'm going to wait and see what both companies come out with later this year.

I remember when the first Athlon was released, it took Intel a while to catch up. Something happened at the start of the 64-bit wars because Intel jumped ahead and stayed there. I've been with AMD since 2000 and I still like them... But I am drooling over Intel's i7 core processors.

ATI has always been a strong and reliable brand... even before GPU age. I was really surprised that AMD acquired ATI a few years ago but it was an intelligent move on AMD's part. Some critics thought AMD bought ATI so they can compete with Intel's line of onboard GPU's, but THANKFULLY that isn't the case. ATI has always been a powerful brand in graphics and they've proved it.

N'vidia is a screwy brand at times though (I'll admit it). Within little over a year they jumped from their Geforce 8's to 9's to GTX 200s... I was like STFD. They also have a bad habit of recycling old GPUs just to tweak them for a new line of products. So pretty much a smart N'vidia consumer has to investigate what they are buying before they get it. Not that they'd be disappointed otherwise. It's just that I was super impressed with the improvements of the Geforce FX line. It was impressive, but I didn't know till later that it was pretty much a recycled GPU from a previous line with the exception of a few tweaks. Nevertheless, I like N'vidia.

******** My information may be flawed about N'vidia's history since it's been a while, but this is what I remember reading. **********

The six-core is definitely the way to go since everything is only going to get more multi-threaded.

The GPU I'm not too up on lately but I'm sure it's a good pick. (I'm not giving up my twin BFG GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB GPUs for quite a while yet since I have no plans of migrating away from XP Pro SP3.)

Eight GB RAM and maybe one TB of HDD space also sounds great.

Go for a nice 16:9 or better yet a 16:10 flat panel monitor; you won't regret it.

Good luck with the build! Don't forget to play TRON 2.0 on it!

FACT: 12 core integrated threading are used in most business computers.

How about this one from Silicon Graphics with 80 cores there and one terabyte of ram.

Like I had said I work with both intel and AMD CPU`s here and I`m always flexiblwe in using either of them.

That and then some. And in which version of an OS that you wish to use as well. 350+ version of linux or HPC of windows server 2008 or 2003. LOL

Thinking about that machine during lunchtim or dinner time over here. 2 quad core processors on each slot times 10 Mind boggling math going on with that baby there.
