Hi all need a lil help here. For some reason my computer over the past month or so has started to randomly lockup especiall when downloading large files (updates for mmos). I figured I'd give it a good old format and reinstall but this hasn't solved my problem. Does anyone here know why this might be happening it has me completely baffled and rather annoyed.

Forgot to mention that sometimes it can take about 10seconds or over 3 hours before it locks up on me when downloading.

Here's the usual fix list for me.
Did the problem start happening out of the blue?
Was a patch, driver update, or any type of software installed around that time?
When's the last time you defragmented your drives?
Have you tried using software designed to fix problems with the registry?
Have you ran Spybot lately to check for problems?
Have you tried using sofware to check windows/RAM/CPU/Mobo?
These are the things I do if I get a crash... I'm sure there's a few different ideas on current software that works. I do that list in order, using the microsoft database, defrag, registry mechanic, spybot, microsoft ram check utility, also I have sisandra pro to look at everything hardware related.

if you reformatted already then its not going to be any spyware/malware/virus. check your RAM - download a cd bootable diagnostic program like memtest86 if your comp didnt come with one. if the ram is good then inspect the motherboard for burnt out or corroded components - also check the fan(s) and heat sink for dust build up which could be causing your processor to overheat.

Thanks for the speedy replies, I've set my pc to run a memory test on next bootup so hopefully there should be some answers there. I've checked the motherboard for dust, marks or anything else that could cause an issue. I have reseated the ram just in case. However I have made two changes:
1) My motherboard has two seperate inbuilt gigabit lan controlers, I've swapped from LAN 1 to LAN 2.
2) I have also removed my gf's hard drive, I recently placed this inside the computer when her's died on her so she could access her work. I am unsure about when the relation between these lock ups and placing her hard drive in my pc began but she seems to think they are related and well as we all know you never argue with a woman especially one who who've been engaged to for 8 years this month :P

That hard drive needs to be backed up asap if you suspect it, doubt it's the files if you've checked them thoroughly.. I've never tried a diagnostic on a hdd, but there's no point in fixing it if it's going caput. 
Mine usually makes a odd noise - like a grrrt hdd noise, the motor stops or whatnot, just like you said, locking up the PC spontaneously... no doubt any malfuntioning HW may cause this.
GbLAN doesn't seem to me to be a problem. If it's not working, it may be just the beginning of a mobo problem however.

When you reformated. I can only assume but I hate doing that. Because it makea donkey out the two of us here. Were all patches updated to the operating system with the latest service packs as well for any drivers for your key components were updated as well? Did you do any disk cleanups and defragmentations on the hard drive as well after the installation? It could be the ram. It might be the cpu as well? Was the processor overheating by any chance?? Is the CPU overclocked on anything on the computer itseld?
When it frose up did it come up with any errors afterwards on reboot? There could be many things that could go wrong. After format, installed all updates and service packs to the system was up to date before installing any software.
I've ran a mem test and no errors were found.
CPU temp under 100% load doesn't go past 60 degrees.
No overclocking at all.
Not sure what else it could be the parts seem to be physically fine no markings on them at all and inside the system is rather clean. Like I said it only seems to come about when downloading large files. Also there are no error messages when starting up except the usual windows did not shut down and how do I want to boot the system (safe mode and the like).

I had a motherboard once that developed a fault in its LAN port (it only had one). It would work fine for a while, but eventually it would lock up while uploading. I ended up having to wait until I upgraded to a new mobo before the problem went away. Sounds similar to what you're experiencing.
Not saying that's what the problem is. But it's a possibility. Since you have more than one LAN on the motherboard, switching to the other one was a worthwhile step to see if it made any difference.
Something I could suggest is, if you're using Windows' built-in driver for your LAN port chipset: then see if you can find a driver directly from the manufacturer of the LAN chipset and try that one instead.
I think most of the LAN chipsets these days come either from Marvell or Realtek, but there are other companies. Check in the Device Manager to see which company made your LAN chipset. In fact, it's even possible that you may have two separate chips: one for each LAN port.

An update to the issue, I tried downloading the files to my gf's hard drive and guess what no crashes. I think my hard drive must be on its way out or is having issues writing date for some reason.

Could be the problem as well. But then it would have given omething with reason that it could be a hard drive crash. Be thankful it was not the click of death on the hard drive itself. Just out of curiousity there. For the lan1 and lan 2 were there a set of settings within the bios to turn one off and the otherone on for example? Cause I have seen some compuers with dual lan cards in them as well foing from 10/100 to 10/100/1000 on some models. So that way you know know only one of the two lan connections are on and enabled. I know tronfaq mentioned about this in a post within here about that part.
