Vista deleting files

on Saturday, December, 05, 2009 11:28 PM
I think I may have brought this up earlier, but today Vista deleted some very important files.

Anyone remember that game "S.T.E.A.L.T.H." I was making? Well Vista decided to delete my main file AND my backup file today, so there's a big piece of my upcoming college portfolio and a year's worth of work, GONE.

It also deleted my base for the game, which means the only way I can possibly start it over would be to completely redesign it from the ground up.

Vista was also doing this to me when I first got it. Several games I had install had data files mysteriously disappearing. Anyone got any suggestions?order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

You can use something like Lifeguard to retrieve the files, I tried it a long time ago(the first version was free if I recall correctly).

Depending on your file system, this could be easy or difficult.
To rescue these files on your system drive may be risky. dunno all the reasons besides filespace.
So it's possible it doesn't harm your files, but I'm thinking it could be bad to do it on the system drive, unless there's just a console with a list of files you can retrieve and stuff.

If the program will be run on a extra drive, you should have no problem.

I wonder if Vista is trying to mount the files to another drive, or losing files when the page file is pushed on the HDD(it moves unless it's fixed on one size, causing files to fragment).

Do you have a customized windows setup(even XP upgrade to vista), page file, maybe low disk space, or possibly bad RAM(maybe incompatible)?where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

My computer came with Vista on it already. This is the first time this has happened to me since about a month after I got this computer. The files that got deleted aren't in the recycling bin and they won't show up in a Windows Search.

I should also point out that this only happens to files in the Program Files folder. Vista also has a Program Files (x86) folder. Why's that?

EDIT: I think I may have found out why. Vista's Program Files folder is for 64-Bit applications, while Program Files (x86) is for 32-Bit applications. It could be that GameMaker is not a 64-Bit application along with its files, which could be why Vista randomly deletes files from Program Files.

Either way, I don't think there's any way I can get the file back, but at least I found out what I did wrong.

TRON.dll, try using Recuva. It's a nice little free program to recover lost files.

The longer you wait, the less chance there is of recovering the files. Every time something new gets written to the hard drive, it could damage the deleted files beyond recovery. If it's possible, download the program on a different computer and get the first Portable version of the program and place it on a USB key if you've got one. So that you don't have to install the program and write to the hard drive in the process.

It may work, provided the files have been deleted, rather than somehow wandered or become hidden.

Because you have the 64-bit version of Vista. 32-bit programs go in the (x86) folder, 64-bit programs go in the regular folder.

Ah, I see you ninja'd me and figured that out already. LOL.

Well, I ran that program and, unfortunately, no luck.

It could be that Windows moved the file somewhere and then hid it, but I can't find it regardless. Crap.

Thanks for the help everyone.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I did find one file in the list of found files on that program, and it was an unrecoverable EXE.

It's probably the hardware's fault. I can't think of anything else.

The Application that Tronfaq is mentioning is a good application to use for the simple fact that it checks the physical sectors on the drive there if they were not written already. In which case they may already be gone like you said. I am wondering as well if there is a back up of the files on the secondary master boot record that is hidden away that the application doesn't look at. Since it is not well known for some applications to take a look into it as well. TronFAQ does the application also checks the backup MBR as well since it might be hidden in there as well. I have retrieved from occasion into it myself. but it was for really really specific things and needed a script under a batch file in order to run it and retrieve the files back the old fashioned way forcing windows to actually bring it back. Mind you Being a tech for 20 some odd years you can recover certain things unless it is a click of death which in cases like that the hard drive is fubarred beyond any software or commend line batch file can do at that point.

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

I've never recovered a missing file from a HDD that is actively working as the system drive.
You have to do this the hard way if you need it back that badly. Dismount the drive(in explorer), change the drive letter, then get the file on a different PC not actively using this letter, change it back and put it back into your computer. Should work beautifully.

But the thing is I did back up my work, and it deleted the backup.

But good news! I moved my Gamemaker data from Program Files to Program Files (x86) and got everything back! Woohoo!

Well that was easy. So it never deleted them at all, just incompatible coding? glad you got your work back.

XP did this to me before. I had Soundforge, Photoshop, and several others that just vanished. None of the start icons would find them and when I went to reinstall, XP deleted them again. I thought I had bad sectors or something, but the HDD was fine. Odd...

Whatever the case, I hope this never happens in Windows 7 because I'm switching over to that next month.

In my case, it wasn't hidden folders or files. They were really gone (I always have the attribute for 'show hidden files' selected every time I install windows).

I suspected a virus or something but I could scan it because my anti virus went missing to.... where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online
