I've never used the CD drive to run a ram check utility but this is what I use, and it will work from a CDROM: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
I would have responded sooner, but I've been putting some long hours in on a video I'm working on.. trying to fix a temp file crash I'm getting in Pinnacle Studio..
I use sisandra also, but I've never looked to see if they have a bootup RAM check utility. There used to be a program that would check your ram, isolate the problem, and keep the RAM working only in the unaffected part of the module.. I haven't been around much lately, myself. Just too much real life day-to-day crap going on at the moment.
Try Memtest86+. It's probably the most comprehensive and popular memory test diagnostic tool out there.

I had one that was through linux over here. But I forgot the name of it. It was a huge repos for hard disk, memory, disk partitioner and a few other things on it as well. I will have to take a look into it over here. Once I get the name of it I'll post you the link. It has such a utility that will do the job as well for testing memory.
