486 and early 90's PC memories.

Routed from a previous thread.

Compucore Wrote:Yeah I know and here is what is really funny about this. And get this f you can follow me over here. The CPU that I was using over here was a Cyrix processor. a TI 50MhZ cpu with a Math co processor along side it. It was an actual 486 SX fitted or arrange in such a way that it would work on a 386 motherboard. And the BIOS itself was set in such a way that it would be able to recognized the processor itself and the Mathco-processor. In the early days of 8088, 286, 386 and 486's that were SX extensions. Did not have the math cpprocessors in them. I think Qixx would agree with me on that. THis one was one of those that required a math coprocessor in it in order to deal with the math and other mathematical stuff instead of dealing or leaving it with the main CPU. nowadays with the Pentium, amd's They all have the Math-coprocessors already built into them already. not like in the old days where the math coprocesors were always seperate.

MY GOD WHAT A TITAN OF A MACHINE!!!!!!!!

Wow... hearing 486 sure brings back memories. The first official PC I owned was a 486 DX (I could have sworn it was a 60mhz but it was most likely a 50mhz processor). I can't remember how much memory I had but I think it was about 4 mbs.

Games I remember playing on that system:

Doom
Tie-Fighter
X-Wing
One Must Fall 2097
Space Hulk
Blake Stone
7th Guest

there were many more...

I didn't play Myst till about 1996 on a Gateway 133 computer. I can't remember the first game I played on CD but I think it was Dragon's Lair for the PC. I could be wrong about that.

Cyrix did make some great processors, despite Intel fanboys giving Cyrix a hard time. I built a computer back in 1998 with a Cyrix MX 233 (IBM acquired Cyrix by this time) . It was a great computer and I had no hardware issues with it what-so-ever. I miss Cyrix.

I can't remember the details of the math-co-processor, but I did spend extra on an Intel 486 DX because of it. I'll have to look that back up since it's been so long. I think it had to do with string processing and advanced floating point calculations... and other stuff that demanded extra technological do-hickies.

I really miss those days. I hear people complain about how they suffered DOS but it was so much more stable than Win 3.x, 9x, and sometimes NT when running high resource demanding software. At least I still have DOSbox.

When CD drives were getting popular (silly people called the drives CD-ROMs like the actual CD-ROM disks) there was a magazine actually called "CD-ROM Magazine" that started out before the release of Win 95. They had everything. Shareware and Freeware games and apps, ebooks (but not in PDF, that came later), videos previews of games and apps, videos of interviews, a cool looking GUI, and so much more. It was the most use of a single CD I have ever seen to this day. People use to take pride in their work back then.

I remember my first pc, was a christmas present from my dad. 486 DX66 processor 2mb of ram, fantastic computer in its day. However 2 weeks it died on us and we took it back to the pc store (called Byte) and they gave us a new machine same processor but with 4mb of ram!! We were like WOW 4mb!!!??

Started off playing:

X-Wing
Tie-Fighter
7th Guest
Star Wars: Dark Forces
Doom
Wolfenstien
Quake
Space Hulk
Space Hulk Revenge of the Blood Angels
MechWarrior Series (might have come later)

Remember having to make a bootup disk to get these to work. Can't remember the hard drive space needed for games but I do remember complaining about games needing around 100mb to install now 10GB seems to be the norm :P Ah those were the days, give me retro anytime.

Well it depended on the type of processor that you were using. the 233's I think from Cyrix already had it in there. It was the 486-40/50 DLC that had the math-co seperate from the main cpu. I believe the others had it included.

One place that I love to visit from time to time for CPU's is this place here. http://www.cpu-world.com/ A great place if you need certain stats from a processor and get information about how they have the serial numbers set up and how to read them on them. And it has a wide variety of information on them. It is not everyone little one made. But it has some really good information there. Take a look as well if your interested.

Descent 1 and 2 were great. I still play both from time to time. Descent 3 was graphically improved but felt wrong on so many levels.

Interplay has been trying to breath life in their old company and last I heard, they are trying to make a Descent 4.... but I don't know if thats going to happen.

Descent 3 was a confusing mess of a storyline and gameplay elements. They took out almost everything that made Descent 1 & 2 a fast paced arcade experience. The main issue was that Descent 3 emphasized way too much on the storyline. I played through the first two skipping all cutscenes. It was "screw the story, I want more explosions" for me. It didn't work when I played Descent 3.

With Interplay reviving some of their franchises recently (i.e. The Fallout Collection, the rerelease of some of their titles on Steam, and the recently announced ClayFighter remakes for WiiWare and DSiWare), I'd say a new Descent title wouldn't be entirely out of the question, but I have little faith in Interplay after Descent 3.

Descent 2's soundtrack is beastly. The fact that you could put the CD in a CD player and listen to the soundtrack is ridiculously awesome.

I did like the storyline of Descent 2, but that's because it was just brief and not important to the gameplay. Regardless, the game was so super awesome.

What really strikes me is that Interplay was one of the 'kings of the hill' when it came to PC gaming. A lot of awesome titles come from them like MDK, Freespace and Stone Keep but something happened. They quickly faded away.

I would love to see a Descent 4 as long as they keep it in the same style as 1 and 2. They can do everything 3D and not screw it up as long as they keep it in the mines.

In fact, I'd buy a reboot of the first two if they did it in real 3D. That would be so awesome...

From what I've read, they actually had a team working on Descent 4, but they took the license away from them.

That team used the tech they had already developed towards a small little game called Red Faction.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

That would be Violation Inc who made the 'Freespace' games. I played the first 'Red Faction' back when it was released. My biggest problem with Violation Inc is that they won't make a Freespace 3.

Unfortunately, things don't look good for Descent 4. Interplay says they want to finish V13 first, then they'll try to get funding for Descent 4 and several other projects. However, nobody knows for sure what V13 actually is, but rumors suggest it's a Fallout MMO. Bethesda just recently sued Interplay for some reason regarding their V13 project. I'm not too sure how that turned out.

I enjoy going to this site to shw some of the specific things with some of the CPU that are already out there or for some that are no longer being made for current systems to be used with like the Ultra 1 and 2 processors. And some people that I have talked with don't even know that they exist and only heard like Intel or AMD. bring them here and they are allin aww about the information.

Oh yeah... I love reading up on older CPUs.. Like the MOS 6502. That was the power behind the Commodore 64 if I remember correctly.

You know, I just checked the site and i can't find the Alpha processor. I think they reached 500mhz sometime in the mid 90s

The alpha processors are actually DEC CPU's there Or Digital Equipment Corporation DEC 21064 or the last one which was there or the 21264 833 Here is a quick copy of it from CNET. [irl]http://reviews.cnet.com/processors/dec-alpha-21264-833/1707-3086_7-30437543.html[/url]
Sometimes they go under differet manufacturer names. Surprising enoug Microway is still running there. I am at their websites directly right now. http://www.microway.com/
Can you tell I am just way too geekie for my means here.

BTW I might be able to make it to a Comicon that is p here this coming weekend. I just might go to it. to see what it is all about.

Yeah, it drives me crazy knowing that I'll never get to play Freespace 3; very much like never getting to play Babylon 5:Into the Fire which, by all accounts, was set to equal and possibly surpass the Freespace series in the space combat sim genre.

Descent and Descent II were awesome. I still have the Spacetec SpaceOrb 360 I originally bought expressly for playing the Descent games; it turned out to be an amazing all-around FPS controller.

I remember trying to get descent to work when it waspopular way back when. But due to something in my hardware way back when I couldn't play it at all over here. I was running it ona my old Cyrix machine at the time over here. Or was it my Pentium compter. It's been too long since I played it.
