Hi everyone, bit of a strange one for you. I've decided I am going to try my hand at writing a book and I was hoping that some of you may be able to give me some advice. I am not going to post what it is about for obvious reasons (you never know if some one might steal a good idea ). But basically its based on a Nightmare I had a few weeks ago. When I told my girlfriend about it she said that it sounded like it would have been a good movie or a book, so I decided "why not".
I have a plot in mind expanded on the inital and very vivid dream (its not often I yell in my sleep ), I am working on the back story now, writing a brief overview of the whole story. I've build the background for the main character in for the book and will be adding some more as and when I start to actually write it. But at the moment like I said I am just outlining the plot getting some ideas down on paper. But I would really like some advice, if you have no experiance with writing I would love to know what makes a good story for you. It is a sci-fi crime novel with a slight twist, as in it is not very sci-fi at all in fact the sci-fi part of it is not really key similar to Dune. If you didn't know Dune was in the far future and that there was space ships you would think it was more of a fantasy book.
Again I don't really want to give away much, but any help you could give I would most appriciate it. And if it ever did get published you would all get a special thanks mentioned in it
So again;
What makes a good book in your opinion?
What style of writing do you like?
Do you have any advice on how to write a book?
What would you hate in a book?
Thanks in advance

I am a big fan of writing and have done so myself, although recently more script/screenplay type things, but I have done a lot of creative writing.
Now as for advice, do not expect a lot of yourself. It takes a lot of time, most of which is spent procrastinating, daydreaming and staring into the distance. But to achieve something just try to do this as frequently as possible, no matter how unproductive it seems, because occasional sporadic bursts of inspiration do come eventually.
Read a lot I would say, because there is only so much wikipedia and generic "How To" articles from the internet can help, so learn from other authors.
Try to do something different. Books have been around a very long time, which means the same old mainstream cliché book ideas have been repeated over and over. By the sounds of it your book idea is quite different, which is good. I for one have never heard of a book based on a dream, so you could easily exploit that and use the dreamworld aspect by showing things that would be impossible and illogical in the real world.
But keep trying man, I'd love to read anything you feel comfortable with putting on here as like a demo to get feedback.
My humble little internet slice. Visit, read, comment, and laugh (with, not at I hope...)

Thanks for your reply, some good insight in your replay and a few interesting points. Sounds silly but the fact that books have been around for a long time never actually popped into my mind. Mostly because I am basing this on a dream I had, but I've never actually stoped to think if my dream was actually influenced on anything (sorry if the spelling is bad I've been at a 6 hour Iaido Seminar and a few Japanese Whiskeys). I'll do as you suggest buy reading alot in the area I am writing for. It is a Sci-fi serial killer novel, not sure how many of those exist (if any) but I'll look it up tomorrow (when I am sober ).
Any other comments would be more than welcome and most appreciated. I am mostly writing this book for self satisfaction, if it never gets publised I am fine with that because I can look back and say that "I've done something" if that is the case then I'll be happy to post it on here for everyone to read. Thanks again for the input I really do appreciate it.

I guess we all have a book Inside us, me included. When ever the topic is up, I have never met anyone who do not have a vague idea about a book.
A sciFi serial Killer inspired by a Nightmare? My first thought is Freddy Krüger set in a future Elm Street I read a lot, mainly Star Wars books. They have a team of many Writers which gives a great diversity on the same plot. And then ocationaly, some masterpieces are created. My favourite is Traitor by Mathew Stover. Im not gonna write a review now .
But on the flipside there are som realy lousy writers out there as well. Theres this writer named Aaron Alstom, who always get jobs at Lucasbooks. Obeviously without love for the caracters. In his books there are always a sideplot. Some folks goes on a quest to do something wich have nothing to do with the main plot. It is only shooehorned inn to fill out the pages.
So here comes my advice. If your book turns out to not be this 1000 page epic but only a 150 pager. Be happy No need to drag it out if there is nothing to tell. ---------------------------------------------

I like your last statement, my thoughts exactly. I am not doing this to sell it (I mean if it ever came to that then great) but this is more for me so I can say I've actually done something. Going to clarify the whole theme of the book though (mostly for me as well I do get confused if I dont note things down).
Few weeks ago I had a nightmare which I took for the plot for the story. The sci-fi element in the book is very low in itself. Set in the near future so the world is basically as it is now. The serial killer it the main part of the story and the scifi part of it adds the twists and surprises in the plot. I'll look at the book you mentioned, its always good to get some ideas and reference points to help me. Set in two parts the first is current events and the main plot where you follow the main character and the second which jumps in every other chapter takes part before the initial "event" which put the main character into this situation. The second plotline is mostly background and character development but there will be nice little pieces of the puzzle that come together at the end to reveal the big picture and perhaps (hopefully) make you go "oooooo! didnt see that comming"
However I do realise that there are alot of books out there which have covered the same plot over and over and over. I have done a quick search for books along my chosen theme and so far have so far not found anything that uses the two elements that I am basing the story around (hence why I am not saying what it is, why give away what might be a really good idea?)
But I'll keep looking and let you know how it goes.on line abortion pill misoprostol dose abortion medical abortion pill onlineabortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

What makes a good book in your opinion?
The kind that have stories like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOqM_z-6aVY

Do you have any advice on how to write a book?
Ask this guy: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1047027/squirrelking
What would you hate in a book?
I dislike old British literature that tries to use metaphors for every other word. It puts me to sleep and I feel that I'm in a minority because I only hear good things about it.
