Don't know if you're aware of this, but I thought you'd be interested to learn about Valve researching sign language for use in Half-Life 2: Episode 3.
In my opinion, this is pretty nifty stuff. Being able to realistically communicate silently with other characters or players would bring a new level of reality and immersion to games.

Though, I prefer text, ha ha ha. (I have trouble understanding ASL sometimes considering I use SEE. >_< ((two different signing system, one is "the language of Deaf" and the other is simply Signing Exact English.))
...but Valve always continues to impress me what with their captioning opinion for L4D... although, I wish that sometimes, it wouldn't suddenly "forget" to warn me of an impending swarm. :P
