New Free & Simple Microsoft Basic

on Friday, April, 17, 2009 3:24 PM
Miss the day's of making simple programs, or never seen them, it's been what, 15+ years when that was last possible?

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/devlabs/cc950524.aspx
What? A download of only 5 megs? Install in 1 minute? Pong on 1 page of code? Even has whacky turtle graphics.

Give it a try, looks nice, just open a sample program in "my documents\small basic\samples\" and see. You might want to download the "getting started guide" on the link also, since there's no help.

Interesting thing is that it outputs an executible (few k bytes) and you can hit the publish button and it uploads the source to a website automatically and gives you a url or identifier to show your friends. If you make something why don't you post it here.

I found and tweaked someones code and 'sectorized' / light cycled it, you can copy it from here if you want to try. It's not code to start learning day 1 on though: http://smallbasic.com/program/?RDS358 I added a bunch of comments to make it somewhat easier to figure out (their "arrays" kinda suck). It's super easy to get, just press the "import" button on smallbasic, type in "RDS358" and then hit the play button.

I figured it was like weaving a diagonally running light cycle around grid bugs...

The writer made it blocky looking, it can be any resolution.

If you write something, make sure you use lots of goto's so you can enjoy debugging the way oldie moldies did.abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

ANd then the good old gosub. Mind you C++ is still the norm since you can create modules and all that for it. Which is a good thing. But still another basic app to work with?? I still enjoy working in C++ the good old fashion way under Borlands version. Anything with the dramework junk that they are using are all pre-emptive terpreters at any rate. I remember seeing somewhere that the framework add ons are strictly for MS. If your compiling under the old VB6 for example or under Borland Cbuilder your working under the true exe coding. Then exand to dlls afterwards. C++ is more or less if you know how to code well in CC+ can be cross platformed compiled properly.

I've done this under some other OS like Vax VMS or under unix/linux with some small minor changes and check ups on what or what changes needed to do so through the man or help pages of the compiler in question being used. But it is a excellent working way to learn it on many platforms you can get your hands on.

2 Legit 2 quit

End of line

Compucore

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

Somebody made an Asteroids

When you run Small Basic's editor/compiler, just press the import button and the code 'QFL408' to get the source code.

I made a Stargate 80's arcade game in Small Basic:

You can download it and the single source code file from FileFront here, along with the sounds I made with some 80's style synthesizers:

It's called StarGates being on a Microsoft compiler...

Cool game Daddyo.

I think I found a bug, in wave five I got shot and the game shut down.

I guess you found an easter egg?

Since it couldn't possibly be a bug in my code... You may have to get the latest .net from microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=333325fd-ae52-4e35-b531-508d977d32a6&DisplayLang=en
Smallbasic programs execute using that, as well as probably most programs from microsoft these days. It's like installing Java on your PC so you can run Java applications.

For me, I started out (and ended) on Commodore basic.

10 ? "Just for giggles, type biteme"
15 if a$="" then 15
16 if a$="biteme" then goto 20
20 ? "Outch"
30 end

but that was then... basic was so easy to learn and a lot of great games were made in basic.

I tried Visual C++ but couldn't understand it pass the 'Hello World' part. I'm not very bright anyways.

I can't deal with C++ either, try this one out though.

Here's a new version of StarGates with slightly better graphics, updated for the new compiler, and bigger explosions!
