Orange Box Problems

on Sunday, November, 23, 2008 2:20 PM
Ugh, why is it whenever I get a new game over $20 it doesn't work right? Keep in mind I'm using Vista.

I just got the Orange Box set from Steam and installed Half Life 2. Here's what happens:

I start up Half Life 2
It goes to the loading screen
"64-Bit Mode active" shows in the corner
Nothing

I've tried running as an Administrator and XPSP2 Compatibility mode. Does Half Life 2 simply not work on Vista? I mean, the demo, Lost Coast, and Deathmatch work perfectly, why not the actual game?!?!? Or does it just take a really long time to load on Vista?

Any other problems I have with Orange Box games I'll post here.

I had an issue which made TF2 and portal run very slow and unplayable, I had to manually add them into my firewall. Try shutting that down, then see if it loads.

This is starting to get really annoying. Firewall is set to allow Half Life 2, yet it still freezes on the loading screen.

EDIT: Gonna try Team Fortress 2 now, see if it works.

It could be an issue with steam. I have HL2 and I can't run it even in XP because of something screwed up with Steam. I can, however, play episodes 1 and 2 with no problems but for the life of me, I can't play HL2.

Have you checked the tech forums over at Valve or at Steam's website?

If I get a chance when I get home tonight, I'll look this up cause I'm in a HL mood and I haven't played it in a long time.

It does sound that Vista is the problem.

Which really sucks.

HL2 woks fine for me. At the time I did not have internet whe I bought the Oranbe Box so I downloaded all the stuff for offline play. Now I'm thinking about uninstalling EVERYTHING and reinstalling it withought that option activated because it took up and UNGODLY amount of space on my hardrive.
I always hit a few snags when playing TF2 but I'm sure yu, like me, will develope your own unorthodox way of dealing with them.
(Hint: when it takes forever to load click madly works for me.)

Well, looks like the only game that won't work is HL2.

Since I've already spoiled the ending of HL2 courtousy of Youtube, I'm gonna just jump into Episode 1.

EDIT: Jademz is helpin' me out with getting it to run through a particular command, no idea if it'll work.

I don't get it, it seemingly works for every other vista user on the planet, why not me?!?

EDIT 2: Still no luck, and I believe Jademz is having some difficulties, too. Thinkin about backing up all my data and installing XP on this Vista machine. I don't wanna do it unless there's a zero chance of it working.

EDIT 3: Just realized somethin'. A lot of the people with Steam issues had XP, which leads me to believe that Steam has problems with the XP OS, and therefore I'd be taking a massive risk at losing everything I've bought.

I have XP Pro and have no issues with Steam, Tron.dll o_O

Just because some people with XP have problems with Steam doesn't always mean that it'll happen to the next person too.

It's probably something else that's factored in.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

he got it working.

he figured out that the other HL2 games weren't launching in 64 bit mode, and I found the command he needed to force it into 32 bit mode, through right-clicking on the properties, go to set launch commands and enter in:
-32bit

I tried to use -directx0 and to see if we could get lucky.. when he reminded himself of something obvious..

Glad you got it working Tron.dll. Now we should see if Qix77 can get his running.abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

You could also try -dev instead of -32bit, and see if that lets you stay in 64-bit mode while still allowing you to run HL2 properly.

It looks like Valve broke something recently. Some people are suggesting that it has to do with Left4Dead. That if you have it installed (full game or demo), it affects HL2 64-bit mode somehow.

Apparently Valve has said they're working on a fix. Problem is, 32-bit mode and 64-bit saved games aren't the same. If you save in 32-bit, you can't load it in 64-bit mode. And vice-versa.

Valve automatically uninstalled the demos from everyone when the full game came out, so I'm okay.

HL2 works perfect for me right now, so I'll just keep it the way it is.

I was talking to a friend of mine, here's the conversation:

Me: Guess what?
Friend: Chicken butt
Me: I got the Orange Box!
Me: But HL2 doesn't work!
Friend: lol
Me: Unless you consider watching the blurry loading screen a game
Friend: It takes 5 minutes to load usually
Me: I waited for 10
Friend: Wait for 20

Many thanks to Jademz.

I forgot to mention earlier, I was starting to get so upset that I was about to write a HalfLife: Full Life Consequences-esque documentation of me not being able to play HL2. Possible scene:

"NO!" yell tron.dll realloud. "I must saves erth from headcrabs and combines but cannot cus computer is evil!"

Last night I was playing TF2 on a CTF map. I captured the intel and returned it to the base. Then I said:

"I have take the intelligence and it will cause meltdown!"

And the Cam_the_Man (who was also on the server) said:

"No! Not all of Dallas!"

I rofl'd

Well, I hope they did that only to people who bought the full game? If they did that for everyone, even if they don't have the game, that would be a really odd decision. (I haven't really been following what's going on with Left4Dead, so I don't know. I guess I should fire up Steam again.)

Anyhow, I hope Valve fixes the 64-bit problem. If I ever play HL2 again, I'd like to take advantage of that mode.

I noticed it said something after I uninstalled the demo, some thing to the effect that they'll leave some of my info for the lfd game, and uninstall the rest. I didn't see anything about my steam uninstalling from their end however..
