Thief - I, II, III

on Friday, November, 21, 2008 6:30 AM
Anyone here ever played the Thief games? I can't get the first two to run in XP and I can't get them to run in WINE for Ubuntu. The first problem is due to the indeo codec but I got that installed. The second has to do with DirectX 9 which won't allow the old games to run. Doesn't anyone know if there is a patch that I can download?

Thanks...

I had a similar problem with Descent II, and then I finally got it to work by running it in Windows 95 or Windows 98 Compatibility mode.

If you're not sure how do to do that, then read on. Otherwise, ignore the following.

Go into the Properties of the game's .exe (right-click on it and choose Properties). In there, you'll see a few tabs. We need the tab named "Compatibility". The rest should be obvious. Select whatever version of Windows that Thief I and II would've run best in. I'm assuming the first Thief should be run in Windows 95 compatibility mode, and Theif II maybe in Windows 98 mode.

But for good measure, I did this to every last .exe in Descent II's folder, although that may not be necessary.

Yep, I've played Thief 1 and 2. Both amazing, awesome games. I'm ashamed to say, though, that I didn't get around to playing them until earlier this year. I knew everyone praised the Thief series as being fantastic, but it was the medieval setting that kept me from playing them until now. I'm not really into medieval, fantasy games.

Thief 3, I'm maybe 1/3 of the way through it. I started playing it immediately after I finished 1, 2, and the T2X fan expansion. But it's just not the same, and I've played it sparingly since. Doesn't hold a candle to the first two. It looks and plays like an Xbox game . . . it suffered from being a bad port. I actually like it even less than Deus Ex: Invisible War (aka Deus Ex 2), and I didn't think that was possible. Thief 3 makes DX2 look good by comparison.

There are a bunch of patches and mods for the Thief games, to make them run well on XP and Vista and the newer graphics cards.

Thief 1
Thief 1 Patch - Only meant for the original release of Thief 1, if you have Thief Gold then don't use it
DDFix - Makes the game run better on newer graphics cards and dual or quad core processors
Widescreen PatchThief 1 AI Mesh and Skin patch - Upgrades the character models to have better quality
Thief Enhancement Pack - Updates some of the models and textures
Thief 1 Sound Enhancement Pack

Thief 2
Thief 2 PatchMission 2 Fix - Fixes a problem with the second mission in the game
Mission 11 Fix - Fixes a problem with the eleventh mission in the game
DDFix - Makes the game run better on newer graphics cards and dual or quad core processors
Widescreen PatchThief Enhancement Pack - Updates some of the models and textures
NTEX - Big upgrade to the quality of the textures in the game
Thief 2 Sound Enhancement PackT2X - Fantastic, high quality single player expansion for Thief 2

Thief 3
Thief 3 PatchDEF - Fixes Thief 3 to work on dual or quad core processors
JohnP Texture Pack - Upgrades the textures in the game to higher quality
Minimalist Project - Changes the gaudy Xbox-style user interface to be more like the original Thief games
Widescreen Patch
For the patches/mods for each game, I listed them in the order you should install them. Installing them in the wrong order can cause problems. You'll notice that some of the patches work on both Thief 1 and 2, so no need to download those twice.

For Thief 1 and 2, you might need to add the line safe_texture_manager to the end of the user.cfg file. And you need to run them in Administrator mode, or else they'll crash. You might need to install the Indeo codec as well, for the cutscene videos.

For Thief 1 and 2, you might also need to use the Compatibility Mode feature Tim.H talked about. I had to set Thief 1 to Windows 2000 mode to get it to work 100% properly.

For Thief 3, you may need to turn off DEP on XP if you have it turned on. On Vista, DEP is always on by default so it has to be turned off in order to get Thief 3 to work. If you don't know what DEP is, visit this page to find out what I mean.

Thanks.. I still can't run it due to a DirectX issue. Thief doesn't like DirectX 9 and I don't want to downgrade it.

However, I am able to play it in WINE for Ubuntu. It's really buggy though but I'm able to play it.

I always loved the Thief games. I didn't get it till the 'Gold' edition was first released back in the late 90's. I was digging around and found all my Thief games and figured I'd play it again after all these years.

Compatibility is a huge issue for older games on Windows and compatibility mode sucks with a lot of games. I still wished someone would write an EMU that emulates a 3Dfx Voodoo (and other older cards) and you can choose old DirectX libraries. Also have a CPU speed setting and can emulate Win 3.x, 9x, 2K, and XP cores (but not the OS unless you own and install it if you want to). An emulator in the style like KGEN Fusion or DOSBox or something.

The Virtual Machine can do that (except emulate GPUs) but its buggy and you really need a crap load of RAM.

Ok... back on subject...

Thanks again for the patches. I'll see if I can get them to work on WINE.

I can play Theif III though and I'm going to dive into it tonight when I come back home tonight. Going to a house warming party and someone said they have a bottle of scotch waiting for me... Woo Hoo...

That's where DDFix comes in. The Thief games use DX6, and both nVidia and ATI have crappy support for DX6 in their drivers now. They've been removing functionality that handles the older versions of DirectX properly.

BTW, I forgot a couple of things so I added them to my earlier post in this thread. I added the parts about safe_texture_manager, running in Administrator mode, and the Indeo codec.

It works great with the DDfix.... My problem before is that I still had it on 'Win 98' compatibility mode and it was crashing with the patch... but I took it off and it works great... Thanks, TronFAQ...
