So Bioshock is coming out for the PS3 in a couple of weeks. Once very ODD feature I found in the game (from the demo) is the the fact that when you die, you come back with your weapons and powers and the monsters you were fighting still have the damage you dealt them previously.
Soooo.. it's like you never REALLY die.
Does this detract from the game/gameplay at all? Visually it was stunning... the opening segment blew me away. I just don't know if the gameplay is hampered by the fact that there appears to be no consequences to dying.

Is was probably jus a feature of the demo. Think about it, people probably only play demos for 5-10 minutes. After they get the grenade launcher or something they don't want to die and get sent all the way back to start. So that make it as if you don't die in the demo so that players can see the good parts of teh game.

It's like that in the full game, too.
After complaints from a lot of old-school System Shock players, a patch was released for the PC and 360 versions that allowed turning off the Vita Chambers. Which meant that if you died, you really did die. Instead of being essentially invincible. This has been added to the PS3 version, as well.
You might want to be aware that there's a bit of controversy over the PS3 demo . . . that the visuals are not as high quality as the PC and 360 versions.

I played the game on my PC about a year ago. And while visually it's definitely eye-popping, as a System Shock veteran I found it rather disappointing. Way overrated. Played it once, then tossed it on the shelf to collect dust.

I missed out on the first System Shock, but did play System Shock 2 and loved it.... however, I was more fond of the Thief games.
I want to play Bioshock but I need to build me a new computer. I'm still running a Geforce FX 5800... This sucks cause I can't play "Bionic Commando Rearmed" since it will only runs using modeling sharder 2.0... errr 3.0....

Gee, I guess all those other people must be wrong then! We've got some goodies in the works for PS3 that will add to the game a bit too. Might be worth a look.

I played the demo in 1080p and noticed it wasn't as eye popping as say.... WipeoutHD. Still better than the Ratchett and Clank thing they released in 720p.
Thanks for the info. I'll rethink getting it, or wait til it drops in price a bit.

If other people enjoyed it, that's terrific. And I know a lot of people did.
But having played System Shock 2, which Bioshock is supposed to be a "spiritual successor" of: I personally thought it didn't hold a candle to that 10 year old game. The gameplay in SS2 was much better.
I'm sure that the majority of people interested in the PS3 version will form their own opinions anyway, irregardless of what I think. I bought the collector's edition for the PC, by the way. Pre-ordered it. That's how much anticipation I had for the game, before it was released. I've been a fan of Irrational's games for years. So for me to say that it was disappointing, is very heartbreaking.

That's a bit of a fallacy. Almost no games run on the PS3 in true 1080p. Same goes for the 360. They're rendered in lower resolutions, and then scaled up to fit a 1080p screen. It's a common cheat, to make people think they're getting true 1080p. Even the highest-end PCs struggle to render true 1080p (1920x1080 resolution).

EDIT:
I am going to have to say I don't believe that. The games I have (Orange Box and Oblivion) that are in 720p, play at that resolution. If the PS3 upscaled them, wouldn't my TV recognize it as 1080p?
GTA IV and Wipeout HD play at 1080p and say that they play at that resolution (on the box and in the documentation).
When I play regular DVD's, then the PS3 upscales that to 1080p, but not games. They always play at their native resolution.

Those games do support true 720p resolution. But if you played them at 1080p, the image would be upscaled to fit the larger screen.

They don't, actually. If you do Google searches on "GTA IV 1080p" and "Wipeout HD 1080p", you'll find overwhelming evidence that these games do not support true 1080p. It's a marketing deception.
Here's one example to illustrate what I'm talking about:
http://insidethedigitalfoundry.blogspot.com/2008/09/wipeout-hds-1080p-sleight-of-hand.html
There are only a couple of PS3 games that do true 1080p. Graphics at that resolution are simply too demanding to play at even 30 frames per second, once a lot of action starts happening on the screen. Even a PC with two or more video cards in a Crossfire or SLI setup, will struggle to do 1080p at 60 FPS but might be able to do 30 FPS.
Don't believe everything marketing tells you. They'll often conveniently overlook certain facts, or stretch the truth, to sell you something. This applies to any industry, but it's especially rife in the video game industry. Sony will gladly allow the misconception that the PS3 always does 1080p to continue, because it benefits their PS3 sales to not dispell the myth.
