I was talking to a friend of mine who is a long-time programmer for a small software dev company that writes crap for Southern Illinois University...
anyways...
We were talking about how game developers made some really impressive games back on 64k 8-bit computers and storing them on 5.25 inch floppies.
Ok...
So the discussion turned to modern day gaming and are developers really doing their best to make the best use of storage and memory or do they just leave their code cluddered without cleaning anything up these days cause no one complains about 100mbs of useless storage? And what about RAM? Are things loaded into memory that isn't really necessary?
Just thought I'd bring the discussion here and get your thoughts on it. Not that it really matters either which way, but it is an interesting topic to discuss. where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

I can tell you right now that some game companies have actually released games that waste ALL of the space on the disk. Please allow me to elaborate:
As you can see, some developers waste all of the space available on the disk! It's horrible!order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pillwhere to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

I don't get it.
They're games about little green soldiers.
I think what Qix was looking for was a serious discussion.
But I can offer this.
You know about the Hot Coffee, right? (Who wouldn't!) That game did have extra bits of code that was not made visible until people hacked the game.
There are some people who still complain about MGS4 not having a Japanese track on it because Hideo ran out of space on a dual-layered 50g blu-ray. (I believe the complaint was that he didn't even bother to compress the audio) ... but would the audio have sounded right if it was compressed? No one can tell me this. :Porder abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

ROFLMAO Tron.dll...
Qixx77, I wondered if the dev. were going to start using DX9.0c on linux since it runs alot more efficiently, leading to something like what you're pointing at. In general I think thier fanbase is unaware that there's room for improvement, they may only worry that thier PC isn't up to snuff, then buy another, and another. lol.
From what I've read, using linux gives very impressive framerates on new games, it is logical for a gamer to use thier resources efficiently, a friend hosts Tron 2.0 on linux, with no bugs. I'm sure the game would run equally as impressive.
IMO that's one piece of the puzzle..

Kia brought up a good point. The data for 'hot coffee' in GTA San Andreas was really left-over data. I can't speak for consoles, but the PC version had it on the disk and installed it too and would be pointless to install if the hack was never made.... so... why not clean up a few scripts?
Imagine that we made a new Tron game (it's pretend time.. lol...) and say that I had a lot of code that I wrote that was suppose to be for a feature that just never worked.... Now lets say that Tron.dll was working on another area of that game and he had some really involved ideas he tried out and those didn't work either. Ok... so lets say that all of that was up to several hundred megs of useless space that it's taken up (and some is accessing memory)... Wouldn't it just be best to clean all that crap up and make for a lower consumption of HD space?
I'm not talking in terms of performance, but more in the area of just cleaning up bad data. order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

Oh.. I didn't mean buggy software... but Linux is known for its low tolerance for misconfiguration... which is a good thing..
Are you sure about DirectX? I thought Linux only used OpenGL... I'll have to ask Compucore about that... He is the Linux guy.
My only problem with Linux is that it's not always easy to find software for. Good OS and there is more stuff available today... but when I'm looking for something specific, I can't find a Linux version of it.. |

Yes, I understand, but there is an inherent problem with the windows, and the enormous amount of workarounds which dev. use to make it "sterile" that was my intent on mentioning this little bit.. Linux is definitely not windows.

Quite sure. The linux fanbase had been slaving over making this feature, I've been loosely keeping track ever since a friend - Mr. Anderson let me know this was worth waiting for back a couple years ago.. this was one huge step to making the DX9 games work in Ubuntu, games most of us use right now, using wine, except some games specifically made for DX10 in Vista.
So I haven't been keeping up with the linux, DX9, wine info, but I know ppl are using it now in Ubuntu.

Asfar as I know opengl is the only thing that is available under the linux operating system or unix varient. Never really heard of using directX being used in Linux. Only OpenGl. Which makes things easier in linux I think.
Programming wise and learning it from the early days of the computers like on vax machine and on XT computers. The current programmers could use some help in learning on how to trim some of the bulk of the fat coding on their games or applications in the windows world. I've learn way back then when memory and hard drive space was at a premium. You learn how to program and tighten the code. I am one of those guys who had learn back then and brought into my previous courses when getting my degree as a programmer. The teachers were surprised. And I was demanding on more challenging projects from the teachers than they were on the other students. Made them and me sweat like crazy on it. But it iwas a good thing for both.

When I was trying to learn Visual C++, there was a chapter talking about cleaning up before compiling. It was a good read and talked about the voodoo of file sizes.. lol..
When I did do some commodore basic programing, I knew right off how important it was to save disk space (since it was on a 5.25 inch disk). So.. back then you didn't have much of a choice if you were going to write a demo screen or an interface for a menu when you had several games on one disk.
I guess today since everyone has mass storage devices, programmers don't give it a second thought.

From what I see, there are several methods which a user can configure thier linux machine to run DX9, and from what I've read they are running on 256MB RAM using Ubuntu, instead of the 1GB of memory used to run Vista similarly. Of course, I have no idea from personal experience, but this is exciting news if you just want a low resource, runs forever PC. (cough, I just burned up a nvidia590sli cough..)
Here's a link to a WOW running DX9 in Ubuntu Gutsy/Compiz Fusion.

Raising my right hand for a second.[/i} Ahhh Jademz don't you mean 256 megabytes of ram and not 256KB of ram with Ubuntu. Ubuntu is nice even with 256megs of ram. I did raise the memory up on my laptop with 1 gig of ram and tried it with Ubuntu. And it hasn't touched any swap files with 1 gig of ram. And depending on how you have it configured as well. Since I just swap hard drives out and use either one for use over here on my IBM 2658-BQU laptop over here.

{i} AS the theme song from dragnet comes on for a moment. and I step out of the car looking like the detective.. It's okay we all make a murphy law mistake from time to time. As the saying goes to error is human to really foul up requires a computer.
Mind you it would be really a nice thought to get it down to that size on a rom chip for an OS with a gui incorporated. Mind you that is going to the extreme of thinning the code of programming.
