Homebrew Video Games

on Friday, May, 16, 2008 11:51 PM
I thought it might be fun for anyone who's made their own video game to show it off here.

Here's one I did over a decade ago, copied off of Star Castle before MAME came along. The guy in the middle can only spin, shoot, and launch a slow tracking fuzz ball, the one on the outside can go anywhere, knocking holes in the rotating rings.

A neat effect is that when you drive into the rings they shake and make a 'boing' sound, and also if you're the outer guy and get blasted to bits while your flying towards the rings, you take out a section of rings where your bits hit. The Earth behind the guy in the middle is a 3-d animation of the Earth spinning.

I got close to getting a modem link version of it working, otherwise you could fight 1 on 1 or 1 vs computer.

I know there's a bunch of you who've made or are making stuff. If you keep your posts to a minimum, it'll be like a homebrew showcase. (edit: I wrecked that already...)

This looks like it was inspired by Star Castle... I miss that game.

BTW.... I so love the Homebrew gaming stuff. I'm a big fan of GameMaker 7 and I really wished I could make my own game (I just suck when it comes to learning script)...

I do have a very huge admiration for folks that can make their own engines... Anyone who makes their own games, look me up... I want to play em...

It seems to still work, but if you cant hear anything, make sure your MIDI volume is high on your windows audio control panel. If you try it, and if enough people enjoy it, I may try to modernize it & have it work over the net (alot easier than modems). I need to have something to keep me focused at work anyway...

I know it's very basic, so go easy on me! It's alot more work than you may think if you haven't done this before, but it was fun to do.

Here ya go: Castle.zip

Just unzip this file into any folder on your PC, and run castle.exe. Who knows if it'll work at all in Vista. It shouldn't crash your PC but I cannot guarantee anything being as old as it is, so use at your own risk!

The key's are:
Defender: AZXC
Invader: up/down/left/right arrows, enter key to fire
Press escape to quit.

Enjoy!

I almost forgot how much I suck at Star Castle.. lol...

Well.. The sounds work and there doesn't seem to be any problems with any of the VRML stuff. Plays really well.

I really like the 'earth' graphic. Gives it a nice touch.

I didn't hear any midi either. I make some midi music myself and it plays well on my computer... but if this game had any then it wasn't playing.

I think you did a great job.... and choosing such a classic to work on is awesome. Too bad it reminds me that I suck at this game.. lol.. but I was able to get to the center and kill the little guy twice. :P

I have noticed some artifacts left behind while playing. Sort of when a sprite passes though an area... Seems to be random.

The only keys that I can get to work for the invader are the arrow keys (which is great) and the Enter key to shoot.

I haven't played the defender yet...

The joystick option doesn't seem to work on my computer. I think it's just me then....

[edit]... duh... you posted the keys already.. lol Sorry.. I thought that was a signature.. lol.. :Porder abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

I never figured out the artifacts part, sometimes I think it's windows, but it's probably the ordering of the screen writes. There's no double-buffering or complete re-draws of the display. I dont remember if joysticks ever worked actually.

I'm glad the sound works (I updated the original post for reason), and the game works for someone else for that matter. What you hear for effects is MIDI, there's no music. I used MIDI gunshots and low bass notes for things, every computer will sound different depending on the sound card samples used to represent general MIDI. You're the first to play it outside of my home!order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pillabortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

Wow.. thats cool. I'm honored..

Have you heard of game maker? They improved the engine a while back and I've played alot of the games they have on their new site. Very impressive stuff. If you are interested, it might save you loads of time in programing.

If you would just like to see some of the games people made for the engine.... go to:

http://www.yoyogames.com/

I'm really impressed by the choice of midi that you used because it didn't sound like it. I suppose a very low gunshot really makes a difference. I think it was a good choice.

I always wanted to try Visual Basic but I haven't been good at a programing language since Commodore Basic... Which it's programing structure is like this...

10 ? "This is and example. Please press Y or N"
15 if A$ = "" then goto 15
20 if A$= "Y" then goto 50
30 if A$= "N" then goto 100
50 ? "You pressed the letter Y"
60 goto 10
100 ? "You pressed the leter N"
110 END

It was really simple like that but did require a lot of typing. I tried to learn C++... err... visual C++ but couldn't ever get use to the programing structure. Plus I'm really not so good with math.... that and I guess you can't teach this old dog new tricks.. lol..

Anyways... I'm glad that someone out there is working on a classic from scratch. I'm very impressed by people that can do stuff like this since I've tried and gave up.

There's always the demo of Recognizer.

It's like playing through the movie TRON, but from the perspective of the MCP's forces.

I plan to release the full game this summer, and after that, I'll continue to make games.

I've been doing some concept sketches in my spare time for a game I plan to make, which I have tentatively titled as "Spacewar". Obviously, I can't use that name because it's already taken by Atari. This game will be kinda like a 3-D version of Galaxian, in a sense. Here's what I've got so far, storyline wise:

It is the year 2147. The United States has expanded it's military into space, calling that division the United States Space Military. However, a group of rebellious military leaders from Russia have formed what they call the New Communist Red Army. Now, the USSM must stop the NCRA from launching an all out assault on Earth by attacking the NCRA at four vital locations. This is the war of the future: Spacewar.

Kinda like an 80's arcade game, right? Communists are responsible for everything.

I've even made up a really neat polygonal design and everything. Hopefully I can do it right. hehe.

I made up a game where 2 people count to 3 and then make a fist, an opened hand facing palm down, or a sideways peace sign. Peace sign beats open hand, open hand beats fist, and fist beats peace sign.

I might call it "Fist, Open Hand Facing Palm Down, Sideways Peace Sign".on line abortion pill misoprostol dose abortion medical abortion pill onlinewhere to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online

Ha your an old guy too. For me full C++ is messy, along with anything .net, Java too, there all way overly complicated, and you have to practically be a professional to write anything anymore. Old Vb was the greatest, but line # basic really is pretty bad once you've seen the light of structured programming.

I've played with 'game editor', ok for side-scroller stuff, but hard to find your code buried in the editor. I havent made a game in a while, give it a try.

Hahahaha

Avi suggested also we put blood & gore in the game, aliens screaming, body parts, stars in the sky are floating ladies of the night, nudity, and you have to pick up bottles of Brawndo to re-energize. Have to keep up with the new release of Grand Theft Auto 4.

What I really wanna do is try to get my Rock Band drums working on my PC so I can use them as a gamepad. That'd be fun to mess around with in GameMaker.

Or I could just get a Guitar Hero controller for XBOX 360, I hear Windows treats those as gamepads...

I got a recognizer game. Did you write it? I knew someone from the Sector did. Very awesome and just like the movie.

lol... I love the 80's cold war theme. I'm such a cold war guy. Still watching 'Red Dawn' and a bunch of over goodies and oldies.

If I can find time and learn how to understand and write a script, then I would love to see what I can do with GM7 (or is it GM8?). I just need to find time to do so.

lol.. AVI... that was really funny.. :P

Unfortunately, Tron.dll used the name of an already awesome freeware game for his own project, so there is sure to be some confusion along the line. I have the one you're talking about ...it's pretty cool. Tron.dll has some pretty big shoes to fill if he's going to continue calling his game "Recognizer".

Well.... with us.. "Recognizer" is a common name... almost as much as Light Cycles... I have so many LC games with the same name. But if he calls it something like "Recognizer Ultra" or "Recognizer Zone" or something.. then that would work..

Impressive! What's it written in? I got stuck in not being able to exit though in that the "YES" button during exit would just return me to the game.
