Okay, so I got a little excited on the topic, but I think this is something everyone with a high-def disk player should know.
Today, whatever company makes HD-DVD announced that they are pernamently ceasing ALL production of HD-DVD players, disks, etc...
Blu-Ray is victorious! (not that I care, I'm happy enough with regular DVD)
It doesn't apply to me really, but I figured this is pretty big news in the high-definition market. Of course, this makes Blu-Ray the only HD format available, which I believe could be illigal in some ways.. IDK
I guess it would only be illegal if Sony bought the company making HD-DVD players. Seems like Microsoft made a smart descision, after all, selling the 360 HD-DVD player separately, guess they won't lose too much $$$.
TRON 2.0 (PC) name - TRON.dll
I'll play any mode, but I'm best at LC.
PSN - TRON-dll
XBOX Live/Games for Windows Live - TRONdll
-I have a Wii, DS, and 3DS. PM me to exchange friend codes. |

YAY!!!!
I don't know. I like the color blue, I guess.
EDIT: Sorry, my connection was really bad, so I resent the form.

Yeah, the format war is over. But too bad Blu-Ray won.
I thought that when you compared the two closely, HD-DVD was the better format for consumers. It had a lot of advantages.
- No region coding like the original DVD format, meaning an HD-DVD disc could be played anywhere in any country. Blu-Ray has region coding.
- Studios could easily make DVD/HD-DVD combo discs; so you could buy a movie and play it on your DVD player now, and then when you upgraded your player you could watch the other version without having to buy the movie again.
- HD-DVD had better interactive content support (extras, commentary, etc).
- Companies that manufactured DVD discs needed to do very little retooling of their equipment in order to make HD-DVD discs. This probably would have meant lower prices.
- HD-DVD had less oppressive copy protection, which meant they were easier to rip. Legalities aside, it meant that you could rip a movie and put it on a portable media player without having to buy the movie again.
The only disadvantage it had was less space on the disc. But the majority of the releases on HD-DVD never filled up the disc anyway. The picture quality was the same as Blu-Ray. Both formats used the same codecs and bitrates. (In theory Blu-Ray could support higher bitrates because it has more storage space, but no studio has taken advantage of it yet.)

I really have no interest in either format, as I'll wait for the all download world to take hold. Regardless, what troubles me over this development is how the death of HD-DVD transpired.
This wasn't a matter of popular choice of the consumer or a superior format winning out. It's one of exclusive distribution rights closing the door on the competition. There was Betamax, VHS, Then when they were trying to start with the 12 inch laser disc for movies as well. I remember you could rent those at small place like depanneurs(Convience stores in the US.) That had them for rent with the player itself. Where you had to slide the disc in from the sleave that was inserted into the machine itself. And pull the sleeve out and watch it that way. And now with dvd's and blu-raydvd's. times do change over the years.
