The Official I hate Vista thread

on Monday, December, 17, 2007 6:30 PM

I'm joking in the thread title. Well, half-joking.

I just built a new computer to replace my aging system (five years old). Here are the specs . . .

Cooler Master Elite 330 Case
Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe Wi-Fi Mobo
Athlon X2 6400+ 3.2GHz
PC Power & Cooling 750W PSU
Radeon HD3870 512MB
Auzentech X-Fi Prelude 7.1 Sound Card
2GB OCZ Platinum XTC Rev. 2 DDR2 800MHz
2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 SATA 500GB
LG H62N SATA CD/DVD Writer
Acer 2216WDB 22" LCD Monitor
Cambridge DTT2500 5.1 Surround Speakers (these are old, had them for a long time already)
Logitech Access 600 Keyboard
Logitech MX518 1800DPI Mouse

Not exactly a killer rig, but no slouch either. I actually managed to put everything together properly on my first try. POSTed on the first power up, and everything was working correctly.

But then I installed Vista . . . and the nightmare began. It took three installs before I managed to get everything stable. Seems the third time is the charm. I'm slowly getting all my applications installed again, and everything customized.

Also, Vista didn't like my router so I had no internet access at first. I had to update the firmware and reconfigure some settings. And of course, in Microsoft's quest to make things "easier", they took away some control over the networking options and now Vista tries to do everything automatically. Bah!

It's not all bad, though. There are some things I like about Vista. But so far, the bad is outweighing the good. Maybe I'll change my mind once things have settled down and I've had a chance to get used to it.

Congrats on your new system, TronFAQ!

There's nothing like a fresh new system... except the hassle of re-installing everything and customizing and tweaking, etc. Never cared for that part.

Vista, huh? You're a braver man than I. Then again, I don't have anything powerful enough to run Vista. To be honest, if I bought a brand new PC tomorrow, I'd go XP SP3 rather than Vista.

I'm looking forward to your findings on Vista though. I've heard some people praise it, but mostly I hear about the headaches it causes people.

It will be interesting to hear what you have to say and why.

Good luck with it. I hope you're able to make it work well for you.

I'll join in the I Hate Vista group too.

I'm working with it, but only because I need to know how it works since I work in IT, and it has some sinister issues.

Most of the problems seem to be caused by DRM, which is another hate.

And it has some really nasty bugs they won't fix, such as taking centuries to copy a network file, and refusing to let you delete some files/folders.

Less system control means more likelhood of catatrophic issues means get used to installing it

Very nice rig you have there.

I see you have the Auzentech X-Fi card; that is so choice. The rest of your components are equally drool-worthy.

Congratulations and loads of good luck with your new PC!

I'm no tech-master, but I can honestly say from my experience with Vista that the best part about it is the new Start menu and new graphics. Other than that, XP is king...(maybe I should get XP with a Vista Transformation Pack )

Yeah, it's been a huge hassle. Particularly because of stability problems I've had. I'd install something, and either it didn't work right the first time or the system would crash. I thought Vista was supposed to reduce crashes and blue screens? Hah! I've had the system lock up with a BSOD more than once.

To be honest, if I bought a brand new PC tomorrow, I'd go XP SP3 rather than Vista.
So far, based on my experience: I'd say that's a wise decision. I still don't think Vista is quite ready for primetime yet. Even though it's been out for almost a year now. I'd wait until after SP1 has been out for a few months, to hopefully avoid the headaches I've had.

Maybe a BIOS update to the motherboard would help. I'll have to keep checking, to see if one becomes available. The mobo I bought is a brand new model that just came out.

Thanks.

Like I said . . . not the top-of-the-line, but not a slow poke system either. I built it on a pretty strict budget, and managed to make this one of the lowest price builds I've ever done.

I see you have the Auzentech X-Fi card; that is so choice.
I read a lot of good things about the Auzentech card. So I figured I may as well go for that, rather than getting a Creative X-Fi. They were about the same price, anyway.
