Damn you Vista

on Monday, December, 17, 2007 5:35 PM

I FINALLY got TRON 2.0 to work on Vista. All it took was the unnofficial patch (btw thanks much TronFAQ) At first everythig was smooth, but long story short, the Light Cycles aren't fully rezzing in. You can see the gray part, but nothin else. There is this area near the fron that distorts the image a little. It could be because I used mpmaphole to skip levels, but I chose singleplayer Light Cycles and it did the same. Oh, the reason I downloaded the patch was because everytime I tried to play TRON 2.0 It would give me the old DirectX 10 and TnL error message. So, any tips to fix the cycles? Mind you, I'm computer illiterate :P

Nah, the map skipping cheat wouldn't cause that.

I'll let you know what I find out, because I just finished building a new computer and installed Vista on it. So far, Vista has been one big headache. Had serious problems getting everything installed and working correctly. But I think I've finally managed to get it stable.

Someone better find an answer quick, too. Good 'ol Billy is cutting off all XP support sometime mid-next year. He should know everyone hates Vista. I once tried Vista at a Best Buy, and I got so irritated with it. I personally don't care if XP gets cut off. I'm just NOT buying Vista!

But it is nice to know that TRON 2.0 is at least playable on Vista.

Don't know if this helps at all, but I have had that problem a couple of times on XP. It may or may not be lag associated, that is, if you're playing online. If it's in single player, then it may be a software issue, cause I've had some small issues like that while trying to run old 95 games on XP. Likewise, I've also had problems running DOS games on 98, sooooooooo...

Not true.

For Windows XP Home/Professional/Media Center, Mainstream Support is currently slated to be retired on 04/14/2009, and Extended Support will follow suit on 04/08/2014. This means that XP will get non-security updates for at least another 16 months and security updates for another six years.

Service Pack 3 for XP is currently being tested in release candidate form. Webzines have posted positive reviews so far, even stating that SP3 provides a 10% boost in performance over SP2. SP3 for Windows XP is due to be publicly available in the first half of 2008.

From what I've read the SP3 release candidate upgrades XP Home to XP Professional; that's quite a nice bonus for those with XP Home.

I've messed around with Vista on other people's PCs, and while I do think Vista is nifty I see no compelling reason for me to migrate from XP Pro to Vista anytime soon.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

Oh, I forgot to mention; part of my hardrive is partitioned off for XP, but I'm not sure if XP is installed. Could this be causing the problem? I also had other problems that resolved themselves.

Nah, that won't be it either. Do you have an nVidia video card? What video drivers are you using? The latest?

I've heard more than one person complain about the Light Cycles not looking right in Vista, and I'm betting they all have nVidia cards. nVidia probably borked something in their recent drivers.

I briefly tested the game in Vista last night, and the Light Cycles looked perfect. But I have an ATI Radeon HD3870 card and I'm using the latest Catalyst 7.11 drivers.

Try this . . . click the Start button, and type "dxdiag" (without the quotes) in the Search box on the Start menu, then hit Enter.

After the program loads, click on the Display tab. Tell me what Name your video card/chip has. Also see if dxdiag says there are any errors, at the bottom of the window.

Download and install this driver from Intel's web site. Open the .ZIP file, copy and paste its contents into a new empty folder that you create, and then run the setup program.

This is assuming you're using the 32-bit version of Vista, probably Home Premium.

Also, before you install it, make sure the System Restore feature in Windows is turned on. (It is by default.) Click the Start button, click on Control Panel, click on System and Maintenance, then click Backup and Restore Center. On the left side of the window, click "Create a restore point or change settings". See if Drive C has a checkmark beside it. If so, then Windows should automatically back up your old video driver before it installs the new one.

Even better would be if you did an entire drive backup before installing. But System Restore should be enough. I'm just saying this in case something goes horribly wrong. It shouldn't, but if it does then I advised you about adequate precautions.

There's no guarantee it will help eliminate the problem in Tron 2.0, but there's no reason not to update your graphics driver to the latest anyway.

Well, the update didn't help. Actually I'm not sure if it got installed (I have a friend who does these kindda things for me). But, I did notice an anomaly in TRON 2.0.
Apparently, I can play the game without the disk. That's right. I clicked the icon to run TRON 2.0 but when I got done I discovered that the disk was actually still in the case.

Well, if you're using the unnoficial patch you don't need the disk..

Otherwise, I'd say your computer has taken on a life of it's own.

FYI to those of you who have the game installed, and use the official patch, there's a . after you type Tron 2.0 in the search you'll see a list go to Tron 2.0 1042.c.

it's awkward to find the hyperlink to the file, but it's a blue box next to the author's name once you've clicked on Tron 2.0 1042.c

You must have the game installed and played it atleast once for this to function.

I used this a long time ago and never had an issue with it.

Sorry Jademz, but I had to remove your link. We don't want to help promote piracy here on Tron-Sector, because the crack can also be used for pirated copies.

People can Google this stuff themselves and find it easily if they want to, anyway.

Well, if you insist. I could give instructions for a non-crack no CD for those who's CDs are bad, (like mine) I know I've lost a few CDs, and I'm more concerned with people who want to play the game, than the notion of piracy. Hell, I borrow CD's I bought friends if I need to reinstall.

Pirate is such an ugly... I prefer the phrase "I've never bought a single song."
Anyways, TRON.dll is right, it's because I have the unofficial patch.

I stopped using the unofficial patch. If I recall, the worst problem is the sounds don't work properly in many maps, and since nobody can contact Riley, there's no way of finding out what all he cut out of the official patch, or, if he will fix it. So you're missing out.

That's only if you're hosting a map using the Dedicated server. And the original unmodified Dedicated server executable has been made available separately, for download.

As long as you're not hosting a server, nobody is missing out on anything. I still recommend the Unofficial patch despite that problem, and it's easily remedied. It is unfortunate that Riley made a mistake there. But it was the only mistake he made.

So to be clear . . . if you are playing (not Ded hosting) then you are NOT affected by this problem. Even if you host inside the game, no one is affected by this problem. It's only when you use the Dedicated server.

Riley actually sent me a fixed version of his modified Dedicated sever from the Unofficial patch, that solves the issue. But it turned out that it wasn't necessary. Like I said, the Official Dedicated server is available for download. Just overwrite the Unofficial file with the one you download . . . problem solved.
