TV Remakes and Sequels

on Monday, November, 05, 2007 8:33 PM

There sure have been a lot of TV show remakes and sequels in the last few years, hasn't there?

The latest news is that Knight Rider is going to make a comeback. The new series will be a sequel, not a remake. It will pick up some time after the original left off. From what I've read, it sounds pretty cool and faithful to the original.

Meanwhile, the new Bionic Woman is just awful. Out of the five episodes so far, I've only really liked one. It pretty much insults my intelligence on a weekly basis, with script plotholes you could drive a bulldozer through. The younger sister is also extremely annoying. I was actually rooting for Sarah to kill Becca in the third episode!

I'll stick with the original Bionic Woman, thanks. It knew it was a kid's show and didn't take itself too seriously, yet the scripts were - on average - much more intelligent than the ones in the new show.

I completely agree. The actress who plays Jaime Summers is terrible. I can't believe she was a huge hit in the UK. She's just an unbelievably bad actress.

I heard from a reliable source (trust me they are reliable) that a Terminator 4 was going to be made. About a week after I heard, guess what?
Terminator
Sarah Connor: The Connor Chronicles
or something like that. I think it's a remake to the terminator movies... and it's a series... on FOX!(or FX I can't rememeber.)
Anyways I wonder how that turns out.
I heard from a less reliable source that a Short Circuit 4 will be released in 2008 but the date alone is a cause for skeptisism.
I got more.

I've been watching Bionic Woman and trying really hard to keep an open mind. I wanted so bad to like it - I've been TRYING to like it. But I don't... not to mention the damn shaky-cam crap makes me just about want to puke. Perhaps with all their budget spend on bionics, choppy stories, and bad acting, they had no money left over for a tripod, so they gave the camera to some guy with poor motor skills and told him to shoot each scene from really weird locations, like from under shelves and outside windows, and do it with a really tight zoom so that his shaky movements really stand out. I'm sorry - the shaky cam is not artsy, cool, and certainly not effective. It's annoying, nauseating, distracting, and a bad idea.

I clearly remember the first episode looking as if it were a bunch of concept scenes shot for the show, each differing from the other, and then all hastily pasted together with a poorly forced plot and called the pilot episode. Either that, or just worst editing ever.

Do we really need to be "treated" to the inside of her bionic ear every time she hears sounds bionically? I think it's kind of over the top and literally cracks up the wife and I EVERY time they do it!

Doubt I'll watch the show much longer. The dude from Robocop (forget his name - he got killed off in the first film) is probably the strongest actor in the show and gives it a hint of credibility. I don't care for the new Jamie Somers and keep trying to find something about her that I like. I don't find her particularly attractive. Her role is either poorly acted or just poorly written and directed. I'm tired of her always trying to be so tough... or whatever the word is I'm looking for (not exactly "tough" but you know what I mean). I can't stand her little annoying-damn sister. Many things about the new series are less than well done if you ask me - especially the annoying-damn other (first) bionic woman. She needs to get killed off or at least never allowed to speak again! "Taa-daa" PUKE! Oh well - at least I tried and kept an open mind. The 70's Bionic Woman will always be the real one to me... not to mention I had a huge crush on her as a kid!

Funny thing - I have yet to chat with someone, in person or over the net, who truly enjoys the show. Everyone I talk to (including those who were not yet born when the original Bionic Woman was on TV) seems to be trying to like the show like I am, but are also annoyed by it.

Ok, after all that ranting about it (again, keep in mind I'm TRYING to like it), I'll mention something I really like about the show. I just LOVE when she bionic jumps! I'm not sure exactly why, but I really love it. I kind of chuckle when she does it, but not in a laughing-at-it kind of way. I just like it. Maybe because it seems to be one of only a few tie-ins to the original Bionic Woman TV series. Of course, special effects are much better than they were in the 70's, so many bionic effects are more realistically demonstrated now than 30 years ago. And the jump is just cool and fun to watch. Perhaps it's because she does kind of a Circus Atari thing in the air when she jumps. Sorry - you have to be my age to really get that, probably. But if you are my age and played Circus Atari, I think you get what I mean. So I really like the bionic jump and even find myself talking to the TV when I watch the show - "Come on - jump... JUMP I said! You gotta catch that bad guy so run real fast and JUMP!" I also like that they have some of the original bionic sounds kind of mixed in with the updated bionic sounds. The bionic sounds are a big part of what made the original show so fun.

Ahh crap. Ran out of time talking about the Bionic Wanna-be. No time for new Knight Rider thoughts. Oh well - looking forward to checking that show out. I just hope it doesn't suck.

How do you really feel, TheReelTodd? Ha!

Okay, I can say the commercials piqued my curiosity a little -- just because I used to watch the old Bionic Woman back in the early '80s. But I've never seen an episode. And if they have the shaky cam thing going on?? And it's like The Office's shaky cam???? There's absolutely no way I'm going to watch a full episode. I can't watch The Office because I'm too distracted by that annoying fakey shaky-cam thing. Not sure why I pick up on it while others don't notice or don't care... but all I can imagine is someone standing behind the camera doing unnatural and voluntary movements with the camera for some lame 'effect' that doesn't convince me one bit as being natural. It doesn't help make me feel 'part of the scene, right there with the actors' at all. Instead, I'm taken out of the scene; thinking more about the dumb camera work and wondering what year it's going to stop. I predict that 5 or 10 years from now, no shows or movies will utilize this fakey shakey cam stuff and looking back to today everyone will be like "what were directors thinking back then with that lame shakey cam?"

Oh, and if Knight Rider is coming back? I'm TOTALLY there! Unless they use the shaky cam. Then I'll be quite upset.

I'm getting out of here right now, and you guys are invited. -----^

Ah, thank you Dave.
Here's to hoping for a Short Circuit 3 that is NOT a remake/crappily done

Yep, the evil shaky-cam is in full force in the new Bionic Woman, or as I call it around the office "The Bionic Shaky-cam".

Not sure why I pick up on it while others don't notice or don't care...

I think a lot of people pick up on it. Everyone at work who watches the show complains about it... well, mostly I do, but they don't like it either. I've read several internet reviews (mostly blog posts), almost all of which mention varying degrees of dislike for the shaky-cam.

Yeah - I'm sure that's what it is. Some guy trying to make it look all real and gritty by shaking the camera. Either that, or the camera man is having the time of his life while an attractive female key grip is down giving him... well, reason to shake, shall we say. Sorry - couldn't help but put that out there. Seriously, I think the shaky-cam may be drama-TV's way of being more "reality-TV" like maybe? But even reality-TV has far more stable shoulder-mounted camera shots. They're just edited together with annoyingly quick edits and intentionally fast camera pans... and people complaining about each other pretending to give a crap about whatever "real" drama is playing out.

I predict that 5 or 10 years from now, no shows or movies will utilize this fakey shakey cam stuff and looking back to today everyone will be like "what were directors thinking back then with that lame shakey cam?"

I sure hope so! I first remember the (intentional) shaky cam thing starting in some horrible TV commercials in the mid to late 80's. I don't remember the product, but they had adults talking all seriously about something and the shaky cam would actually just move all shaky around, often allowing the person talking to be momentarily out of frame while they talked. I remember my broadcasting teacher in high school complaining about how awful those commercials were, and got a big laugh out of the class. He used to encourage us to try interesting things in our video productions, but kindly asked us to leave that kind of thing out, unless done in parody.

Oh, and if Knight Rider is coming back? I'm TOTALLY there! Unless they use the shaky cam. Then I'll be quite upset.

Naa - they won't use the shaky-cam on Knight Rider. KITT has built in image stabilization, remember? Nothing ever looked shaky on his dual color TV screens! And he had some really nifty all-purpose micro-jaming technology! He could micro-jam analogue locks to magically open themselves when Michael held his KITT watch up to them! I used to get a big kick out of that. That even seemed a little absurd at the time, but I didn't care because the show was so damn cool that I felt they could get away with it.

The New Reimagined Battlestar Galactica on Sci-Fi Sucks, I would have prefered a sequal to the original series, but some time after the ending to the original series, it was posable to it that way but they did'nt, and what we have is a crappy remake of a classic Sci Fi series!, The Sci Fi version was a waste of time, and money, the Original will always be a classic, and the better one!abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion
