Cray T3D

on Tuesday, August, 14, 2007 8:04 AM
I want one. This computer stands over six foot tall, over four foot wide, and I think it's about 12 foot long. It's a supercomputer made by Cray Research back in 1993 and sold for millions of dollars..

I want to get one and play Pac-Man on it... lol

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cray_T3D
I think it has the coolest looking case. Looks like something from 'Total Recall' or 'Robocop'. I want to make my own custom PC chassis look like that.

It went out of commission and production in 1999 so I'm looking for one on ebay.. lol... but I'm not spending over $20 on it. Do you think EB Games might sell some games for it? lol....

I'm in a silly mood but I do love the way this baby looks.

Cray has always had nice cabniets for their supercomputers. I have here I think some video from them on a couple of their super computers. That are no longer available from their web site. Mind you you could squeeze it down to a desktop or smaller tower with the right powersupply. Mind you modding one would be intersting if you had a stick or mig welder to do that for a nice computer. Here is one other image directly from their website.

Cray has an impressive history. I was checking them out on the wiki this morning.

They do have some very stylish casings. If I can scale it down, have the proper set of tools and materials, I would so very much love to make a PC tower that looks like the T3D.... or I could got the cheap route and just buy some liquid fiberglass and make molds or something.

Just to be silly, I would love to get the full scale super computer case and install components from a 286 and hook it up to a green and black CRT. lol...

... but seriously, they do have some sweet designs.

Either that or get a full size cabinet like that. And just throw in your left overs with a kvm, router and something to hooked everything up externally to it. And a main switch to turn on all the computers at the same time. With your favorite OS of choice on all of the computers to interact with all of them. And wow everyone at it. An Iea that I had thought up for myself would have been several trays like 5-7 of them so you could fit up to 5-7 motherboards within a singel cabine. Where you can properly place the motherboard, hard drive memory, powersupply and the essentials to make up the computer internally. Then plug it into a super long power bar internally for the power supply and power that sucker up with what ever systems I had It could me a mixed set of systems of X86, MIPS, and sun systems together.

Oooooo... That would cool.

or... We could modify the inside to be a muliti cockpit Arcade cabinet and run emulation games as well as space and flight sims.

Oooo... but if I did have something like that and I installed several motherboards and made it a massive multi computer cab.. I would so deck it out with red or blue neon lighting and make it look like something from Tron.

There are so many possibilities we could do with a cab that big and if we had the money. The only problem is were are we going to put it, and how in the world are we going to move it.. lol.. I hope it can be disassembled into smaller sections... which I'm sure it can be.

Well make it modular where it can come apart in sections with screws that are hidden from view. I remember seeing from myt pdf of mame files of cabs alone. I think it was one for the game sinister that you could do that with either desktops small form factor like the old compaqs or the thin versions of the Optplex GX 150 and lay them on their sides OS's installed and the what nots. and a built in router large 21-52 inch screen in there. sit down version of course. with keyboard, mouse, and a few other things. Inluding surround sound and the neons lights like what you had mentioned.

With a large enough kvm to hook them all up together and a router/swtich to deal with the smal lan in that baby. I think you might remember the pdfs that I had sent you there a whiole ago for mame cabinets. Would be wicket. Painted right and with the right options. cool indeed.

Would be interesting none the less. I remember I always wanted a Vax VMS when I was learning computer programming in the early 90's. Something special about those machines along with cray supercomputers. Always loved using the good old dummy terminal. Still would be a neat idea to even recreate one that looked like a cray system. And just say that it was a cray system. Even though we both know that it is not a real cray system.

Oh by the way how is your linux box doing over there>>

Come to think of it I think you can at least make the casing out of wood to show off as a cray computer. Or partially with metalwhich ever comes first.

Oh Lisa, my Lisa. From Barbie-doll knock-off to super-mega-80's babe with amazing powers and beauty to match. I don't hate you because you're beautiful, I just want you to be my gym teacher... and TEACH me EVERYTHING!

But according to Weird Science, a Cray wasn't necessary to make a hot chick with powers - just an old 8-bit with a analog phone cradle modem. With a Cray, we should be able to make and entire ARMY of Lisa's, and conquer the world... Actually, the Lisa's will conquer the world, and lay down the law for us all. I don't mind a good lay... er, getting laid... I mean getting the law laid Lisa style-e!

You're forgetting the scene in which Wyatt and Gary had to hack into the Air Force mainframe in order to use its power to do the heavy computing. The poor operator was sitting at his station when the mainframe went nuts as shown here:

Man - I LOVD that scene! Ok, that was a chop-up of it for trailer purposes, but the scene as it played out in the film was awesome. I remember thinking how high-tech we were at the time (as in home computing, modems, connecting to remote computers, and cool reel-to-reel government storage devices). I knew the film was fiction, but that scene had a lot of powerful geek elements in it - the kind of stuff TRON nerds love (as displayed in this conversation ).

I love how they had some kind of scanner that had flashing lights every time they stuffed images in to it. Scanners in that time were just a little bit high-tech than that one was. BUT the flashing lights thing was exactly what made us geeks go "cool!" Everything had flashing lights. Flashing lights = COOL! These days everything has to be over-the-edge 3D imagery rotating all over the place. Everything on a computer screen in film and many TV shows had animated 3D objects moving all over the place. You know - like when someone gets an e-mail and all of a sudden there's a giant 3D animated envelope that rotates/moves around and then opens to reveal the message pop out of it. I miss the flashy lights thing.

lol.... MM's right... Weird Science all the way... lol... When he mentioned hooking up a barbie I knew that was where he was going with it... lol... Good call..

Hey Comp... I would love to build a PC tower of the Cray model that I posted on their first page of this thread.... U know... I'll just post it here..

I so love this style... Reminds me a little bit of "Total Recall". Maybe I should pop up the old 3D cad and try to make a model of it.... I so love that enclosure.

I'd say that is what almost 7feet tall and about what 4 feet in width and about almost 4 or 5 foot in depth? Still would look sweet as a hugmongus computer to work with. Imagine the amount of of computers you could put in there? With power supply, hard disk video card and huge amounts of memory? All linked with a kvm, router/switch in the back ground. with a single plug to connectio to a wall outlet and a single point for vieo, keyboard and mouse interface on the back side.

And powering all of hem up at the same time I would faint. LOL.

In looking at that Cray wikipedia page, I saw this and thought it slightly resembled the MCP's structure... you know, how the shields surround the MCP. Also kind've looks like the MCP cone from the Tron video game.

I wonder if it was part of the inspiration behind the MCP's design...

lol.. well... of course it would be a much smaller computer. Just big enough to fix an ATX motherboard in... so it would be a tiny replica.... However, I would like the gigantic power supply though. lol....
