Seriously, I don't know about being a 'much smarter man'. It just seemed to me that a reformat and reinstall was the most straightforward way, if not the least tedious, to correct his problems.

As long as I'm doling out advice, here's something regarding WiFi security that some of you will find useful.
Microsoft created a Wireless Client Update for Windows XP with Service Pack 2, which in their own words serves to "enhance the Windows XP support for Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) options in Wireless Group Policy (WGP), and to help prevent the Windows wireless client from advertising the wireless networks in its preferred networks list."
The thing is, for some reason MS doesn't push this necessary update to you via MS Update - migrate off of Windows Update if you haven't done so already - so most people aren't aware of it and don't have it, therefore they aren't using the highest level of wireless encryption even though they may possess wireless equipment that supports it.
So here's the article:
WPA2 Overview
And here's the direct link to download the update. You'll still have to validate your copy of XP: Update for Windows XP (KB917021)
You can even install it on a PC that doesn't have wireless networking. The update won't do anything for a wired PC, but if you ever want to move to a wireless network in your home then that PC will be ready for WPA2 encryption.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill "We are, after all, not God." - Cmdr. Also, I want to note that I'm not a Vista-hater by any means.
I'm just very happy with XP and XP Pro. XP is a stable and mature OS with SP3 due for the first half of 2008, while Vista hasn't even seen its first service pack yet.
While my old PC will never see Vista, it's possible that my new one might after MS has a year or three to work out all of the bugs. However, much of that decision will be based upon game compatability. As I've said, XP can run just about every Windows game I have, and with DOSBox I can run just about every DOS game I have. I'm not about to give up that level of backwards compatability, so I might have to wait on Vista until I get a brand-new PC and that's not going to happen any time soon.abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion "We are, after all, not God." - Cmdr. DOn't get me wrong I was not saying or implying that Mutoidman. I agree with whole heartly here as well that I'll never get vista either. Due to its heavy resources that it requires. On my other hard disk that I have for my laptop I use XP pro as well. But not as often as my linux hard drive that I am using right now.
I'm weaning everything that I used to do in windows over to linux over here. There are some things that I am forced to use in windows. Because its essential for tech support or programming under windows. But other than that its being switch over to ubuntu linux over here. I'll have one of my dells dedicated to for gaming eventually for that. Other than that its linux over here.

I wasn't implying that you were implying anything Compucore.
I simply wanted to make it clear that I had nothing against Vista. Vista may eventually improve to the point that it is desireable from a gaming point of view; for now, in my opinion, Vista isn't the gaming OS of choice. That OS would be XP. I'm not a big fan of MS in general these days, but in terms of OS's, I'm happy with their XP OS, for the most part. I've had pretty good success with both Win 2K and XP in recent years.
I have no plans to use Vista until I have to. I don't have a machine that is capable of running it (nor will I any time soon) and it's still not fully compatible with existing hardware and software. I'm good with XP now anyway - it suits my needs pretty well (aside general annoyances).
In regards to my computer issues, I was able to track down the installation executable for my old internet security program and install it on my new (hand-me-down) PC. Thank God I archive almost everything I ever use. It installed fine and immediately updated itself with the latest virus definitions, etc.
After rebooting, my PC reverted back to Windows XP default theme again. Grrrr! I set it back to the modified Windows Classic theme and rebooted to test it. It reverted back to Windows XP AGAIN! Double-grrrr!
I read somewhere that if I only have one account on my machine, to create another one and that might solve the settings problem. I created a dummy account (because I'm a dummy ). I set my preferred settings again and rebooted.
Time time, all my modified Windows Classic theme remained intact. I rebooted again after poking around a little, and it was good still. Whew!
I wonder if this trick might have worked with the newer internet security package... but I'm not going to try it. Not until they fix that damn thing so it doesn't cause my computer to slow way down with every button press and long pause when shutting down.
There is a very slight lag when opening up things like nothing apps. like notepad, but not nearly as bad as with the 2007 version of the security software. Oddly, it is slightly more than on my old computer, but only noticeable when I pay attention and look for it.
I think I'm set with that end of things for now. I don't like using older internet security software, but the virus definitions are the same as with the newer software and on that end it will do the same thing - prevent them from infesting my PC (assuming their definitions exist).
I still have many applications to install, configure, work the bugs out of (I'm sure), and some hardware to move to the new machine. It will probably be a while before I consider it to be my new main PC, but I'll get it worked out... with perhaps a few more questions along the way.
Thanks again, everyone. I appreciate your taking the time to offer some insight.

Todd, if you're thinking about alternatives for the CA Security suite, I can recommend the following. Not too long ago I went through a bunch of anti-virus, firewall, and spyware programs to see which I liked the best.
Avast Home Edition Anti-Virus - It's small, it's fast (doesn't slow down your machine), it rates very highly in anti-virus tests, and best of all it's completely free. Who needs to pay for their anti-virus when they can get Avast? I certainly don't. The only "downside" is the default user interface is kind of ugly. But you can download free skins to pretty it up.
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall - Again, it's light and doesn't gobble up a lot of memory or slow down your machine. It has a simple and elegant user interface. It's completely free to use, but afer the trial period it does disable one feature. It has a "learning mode" where it can adapt itself to attacks without requiring updates, and that gets disabled after the trial is over. Otherwise, you have to keep updating the program manually. If you want to register it, the cost is low. Right now they're offering it for $10.
Spybot Search and Destroy - I actually think this anti-spyware is a bit lacking now, compared to the paid versions. But, it's completely free and better than nothing. It's not that it's bad, it's just not top of the line any more.

Thanks for the additional security software info, TronFAQ!
You know - there's so many things out there, it's all so hard to sift through and figure out what's worth investigating and what's not. Getting a first hand account from someone who's used a few different packages is a big help. I've never understood why so many internet security apps. are such resource hogs - they should be light, unintrusive, easy to use, and most of all - effective.
I've got a ton of stuff to set up and configure... and then several new things to look in to with the helpful advice offered in this thread.
I know some people who just love setting up a fresh system. Unfortunately, I am not one of them. It's just work to me - another chore in my day (days, really). I'm grateful to have this new computer though, even if it is already 3 years old. Still light years ahead of my SIX year old grandpa-PC.
Then, I get to do it all over again on my old jalopy! I plan to keep it operative as a back-up machine and a work horse for those long batch processes I often run when playing with video effects. But this old hard drive is, well, old and not sounding well with an increasingly loud whining noise. All the data is backed up, but I've got to swap in a new drive and set up everything from scratch again on this one too.
At work, I've got 3 personal computers at my disposal and it makes multi-tasking a lot easier (as much of my work depends on batch processes, multiple projects open at once, and a lot of general multi-tasking). When 3 ain't enough, there is a reserve of computers we call "the macro station" that I can dip in to when needed. It will be nice to be able to do a little of that at home now - one machine busy, while I can take care of things on the other. A little bit of freedom added to my personal computing. I know many of you already have 2 or more machines networked together. It is definitely liberating!

Three is okay to work with at any given time. But like me I have five to work with at any given time. ANd thats not including an old Aptiva PC or a SGI that I am starting to set up over here. in my room which makes it a total of 7 in one room. I don't like redoing systems myself. But at times you have to at no choice. Todd. We all have to do it at one point in time.
