Crack intros...

on Wednesday, June, 06, 2007 5:31 PM
Back in the day, C64 users (like myself) ended up with pirated games. Almost everyone (if not everyone) owned a C64 game that was cracked. It is rumored that Commodore's market sold so well due to the massive availability of these cracked games.... it was illegal, but it wasn't properly regulated either.

Lots of these cracker jacks who cracked the copy protections on these games made some of the coolest demo screens of all time, but most of which is remembered for their music. It became a really awesome art form and many C64 fans of today always smile when seeing a crack intro that they are familure with.

Anyways, here is one video that I found on YouTube.

Back in the day, I wrote a crack intro with music but no moving sprites. Commodore Basic was really easy for me to learn but now I can't program worth a pair of dingo's kidneys.

I am, however, going to try to learn Visual Basics. Perhaps I can make something.. like a game maybe.

I remember doing that even for the Apple ][e with a program called blacksmith or something another. A really good copying program that would copy whole disk. and get cracked games from friends. it would be like trading baseball cards on diskttes. Those were the good old days. Compared to todays games where they are taking up hundred of megs to a couple of gigs for a decent game. Love those sprites.

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

I remember crack intros ("cracktros"), very well. Usually they came on disk images with more than one game, and offered a cool way to select which game you wanted to play. I had plenty of games on the Atari ST and Amiga with cracktros, then later on the PC.

It's from these cracktros that the "demo scene" came into being. And then, somewhat ironically, a lot of cracking/demo groups became game developers (e.g. Remedy Entertainment used to be the Finnish demo group Future Crew).

That is amazingly true. The cracker jacks became the devs. I once knew a member of Eagle Soft (I think it was Eagle Soft or Parallax) that later went on to work for Epyx (which didn't include Eagle Soft in his resume.. lol)... but that was right before Epyx started becoming bankrupt.

Just for giggles, here is a fun (not related fact). DMA, who made Lemmings, later became RockStar Games and became famous for making the GTA series.
