missing out on 'MMORPGs'

on Tuesday, April, 10, 2007 4:46 PM
Online RPGs are some of the most inaccessible games out there, for reasons that include their lack of an offline component, their steep learning curves, the time commitment they typically demand from the player, and their relatively costly monthly fees. This is the reason why I don't play MMORPGs. I don't have time to spend nor will I ever pay an extra bill just to play a game... However I do love RPGs.

So, why don't I just stick to single player RPGs?

There aren't any. Well, there are a few (keep in mind I'm a PC guy) but I haven't found any, as of late, that seem to be any good. I was a fan of FFVII and FFVIII when Square released them for the PC. I loved those games but then Final Fantasy keeps to the PlayStation and when they released FF games on the PC again, they were online games.

GTA is really a RPG. Some think that an RPG must have swords and monsters to be classified as a RPG but that isn't true. The GTA games are very much role playing but in a much more advance and unique way. The only downfall is that you can not create your character by default but you can down load mods for GTA 3, Vice City, and SanAnderes where you can make your own skins... You can even make your own towns and state as well if you have the PC version.

So whatever happend to the single player experience on the PC? I really don't know. It seems that even FPS games are becoming more and more strickly online than single player these days. True that the AI will never compare to a real person but I would rather have a game to relieve the experience like I do today with 'Duke Nukem 3D'.

What are your thoughts?

completely 100% agree with ya! firstly i too hate MMORPGs, only a lot more . in the very close future, all will remain of the PC games market is MMOGs for obssesive retards, FPS for multiplayer freaks, and SIMs for nerds - and not a trace of single player in any of them.

i'd be a great fortune teller wouldnt i?

My humble little internet slice. Visit, read, comment, and laugh (with, not at I hope...)

I think that the FPS and the RPG have been slowly amalgamating to create a new, more interesting and involving type of game. For example, Deus Ex, TRON 2.0, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Interstate '76, and any other FPS that requires you to make decisions about how you want to develop your character's abilities, traits, and/or equipment, and also how you want to equip your character/vehicle.

There are Freedom Force, and Freedom Force vs. The 3rd Reich, the super-hero RPGs.

And there's Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magicks Obscura, the steampunk/fantasy RPG.

Going back to the days of Windows 95, there are Fallout and Fallout 2, the post-nuclear RPGs.

And I haven't even mentioned the AD&D RPGs, of which there are many!

There are plenty of great RPGs on the PC. Consoles ain't got jack on PCs.abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

That is very true. The PC has a long running history of awesome games ranging from RPG, FPS, RTS, 3rd person perspective, Top Downs, etc...

(interesting that you mentioned Knights of the Republic because I just found KOTR II for five bucks at EB and I missed out on it when it was released).

My rant is mainly about online gaming that is strictly online without much (if any) single player option. A good example is the BattleFront games... Mainly BT: 2142. It's a great game to play and playing online is so awesome but there is hardly any single player to it other than four maps. I've seen a lot of this trend growing in the PC world of games.

I love PC games above anything else, it's just that it's hard to find good single player games these days.

However "Unreal Tournament III" is a game that is giving the best of both worlds. The UT games have always been famous for adding a really good SP experience alongside their MP portion of the games. UT3 is suppose to focus more on the SP experience this time around than they ever did before... so kudos to Epic..

However, I did find a really good FPS I picked up a few weeks ago that I really like.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Great game. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for some more FPS single player games that are coming out this year and make a list... and post them here in the forums.

As for single player RPGs... Phantasy Star Universe was the last one I played that had a lot of SP content, but sadly the game was overly repetitious and the game felt too linear.

I just hope they bring GTA 4 to the PC. I think they will because it sells well on the PC.

I'm just tired of PCs being treated as second-class citizens, as of late, is all. Up until recently, the majority of game releases on the PC were in fact MMORPGs. RTSes. Casual games. Bad console ports thrown together over a weekend.

But I think this year is finally going to start reversing the trend. STALKER is just the start.

Just wait. There are new and potentially awesome SP experiences just around the corner.

Bioshock, anyone?

How about Fallout 3?

The aforementioned UT3 looks awesome - especially since I have a PhysX card!

Speaking of PhysX, CellFactor: Revolution and Warmonger - Operation: Downtown Destruction, two PhysX-heavy FPSs, are just around the corner and are being offered for free!

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. also looks very cool. I need to pick that up.

MMORPGs are good, but I do hate the fact that they charge you about £10 to play the game monthly and then ontop of that they have the cheek to charge you £30 to buy the disk in order to play it!

Unless your playing EVE Online.

MMORPGs have their up sides too, okay when you ignore the monthly costs some of them are pritty easy to play. If you've played "StarWars: Knights of the old republic" then you can pritty much play the majority of the MMORPGs out there.

To get a feel as for what EVE online is like, just go out there and grab a copy of "Nexus: The Jupiter Incident"

There are some FREE MMORPGs out there such as "Guild wars" I do have that but I kinda stopped playing it seeing as I was more interested in EVE Online at the time. There is another space MMORPG comming out which may be partly free.

That is, the basics are free but the larger ships are not. This game does not use skills and handles alot more like a flight sim than a turn based rpg. Its called "Infinity: The Quest for Earth" (http://www.fl-tw.com/Infinity/)

Out later this year I think, I'll be signing up for that if it is free Personally what I like about it is the fact that its more than likely to be able to have a few people stationed on one ship (pilot/gunner/fighters)

Yes you have to pay for MMORPGs but look at it this way. You buy a single player rpg, play it for a few weeks maybe a month or two and you complete it. Then you gotta go out pay another £30 for a brand new RPG game. While with a MMO, you can casually jump back and forth and always have something to do. I've been playing EVE Online for over a year now. And I am still interested in it, okay I dont have the biggest baddest ship as most people who have been playing as long as I have. But I think it is still interesting, I mean I've only went PVP once or twice in that year.

But for all of you who have not played an MMO what I reccomend is this. Download a 30 day trial of the game, you will get to see what these games are all about. With something games like EVE and RF Online 30 days will get you up to a decent level if you play it casually.

I love single player RPGS, but there seems to be much more freedom in a MMO. Those are my thoughts on it anyway.order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pill

A really fun RTS, that has an online component that is free, is Company Of Heroes. It's about WWII following Able Company through Omaha Beach,Montebourg,Cherbourg,Hill 331,and many other places.

Game companies are slowly trying to get PC gamers to "pay to play" just like console owners already do, with fees to play MMORPGs.

Either that, or they're slipping advertising into games (e.g. BF 2142).

This is wrong, wrong, wrong. Evil. Insidious. Disgusting.

I won't stand for it, and I won't buy games that support these practices. The more people accept these, the more they will come to be the norm.

I agree with you on the "pay to play" and inserting advertising IN to the actual game itself. They've been advertising in films for a long time, and will likely take it further in games. It sucks.

I fear it will continue to grow though. Most gamer are younger folks - college age or younger (at least I think that's correct). Younger folks are more open and accepting to this kind of practice. Since it is unlikely there will be much of a backlash (aside from small pockets), I think the practice will continue to grow. Sucks.

BUT some smart gaming company will take notice of all us folks who are turned off by this crap and they'll be all to happy to take advantage of the situation by offering us exactly what WE want. Then everything old is new again... again.

Well, if you like RPGs, why not pick up one of the Might & Magic games? if you can find any of them they should be quite cheap. totally worth the purchase they are!

I'm really into the first person RPGs at the moment.

things like Deus Ex, and Deus Ex: Invisible War

I never play MMORPGs. I tried a 30 day sample of Anarchy online. once i got out of the training area, I was bombarded with stuff like "OMGWTF, LOLZ, HAXXOR" AND "hey wot r u doin here n00b?"

i immediately quit the game and uninstalled it. that was my taste at MMORPG, and i hate it...

My own personal computer, which runs all my games, doesn't even have an internet connection!

I'm really into the first person RPGs at the moment.

things like Deus Ex, and Deus Ex: Invisible War, Oblivion and more recently S.T.A.L.K.E.R:Shadow of chernobyl

Since I got Windows Vista, Oblivion has been running better than ever, so i've spent a lot of time playing that. I bought the new Expansion pack, Shivering Isles a few days ago and have already finished the main quest on there. 'tis excellent!

I also have S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of chernobyl. and have also finished that. but because I was in a rush to get to the power plant, i accidentally missed an important bit to get the "good" endings, so now i have to play the whole thing again...slowly...to make sure I don't miss it.

another thing about S.T.A.L.K.E.R: It's bloody difficult! I kept dying all the time. a single bullet took off about a third of my life. it got much easier further in once I could afford a set of proper Stalker Armour

oh, and if you have windows vista [or ever get it], and are worrying about the compatibility issues with S.T.A.L.K.E.R, I have has no problems whatsoever, all plays fine with me.

it also made me really really want to visit the actual Chernobyl, even though it could probably kill me.

words of wisdom from...

I came across this podcast that fits in nicely with the "pay to play on PCs" discussion . . .

http://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3?http://zdmedia.vo.llnwd.net/o1/Podcasts/040607.mp3
The part relevant to our discussion starts at about the 39:00 mark. Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein from Epic talk about the upcoming Games for Windows Live, which is Xbox Live brought to Windows on the PC. (I'm not sure if GFW Live is going to be Vista exclusive or not.)

GFW Live is going to have the same Silver and Gold level memberships as on Xbox Live, where Silver is free and Gold is paid. If you already have an Xbox Live Gold account, you don't have to pay extra. But if you don't have an Xbox Live account, expect to start paying to play online if you want a good experience.

Because the guys at Epic revealed that Microsoft plans to make Silver so crappy, that you'll want to pay to get Gold. Microsoft wants to prevent Epic from putting in features in their games like Voice Chat, Friends Lists, etc. at Silver level. They want those to be Gold only. And Epic is not happy about it, because these have always been free until now with all their games, and suddenly they won't be any more.

The good news, at least, is that Microsoft agrees new maps, games modes, and patches should always be free to download on the PC side. While Xbox owners do often have to pay to download additional content.

Yea... I saw that link at Planet Unreal so I listen to it. They make a lot of valid points and Epic isn't sure if they are on board with the Windows Live service. What some of these companies should know is that if you are going to make an online game then why charge the consumer to pay a fee to play? It's not like we don't have enough bills already...

I know that for some people it's worth it because they may invest over 50 hours in a game and they are willing to pay so much. I can only invest a few hours a day (and that is if I have time) to play any game. A good single player RPG can last me well over a month.

Well you know what's weird . . . if you read the press release for Games for Windows Live: Microsoft claims that voice chat, friends lists, etc. will be a part of Silver. Yet when you listen to that podcast, the guys at Epic are worried that they won't be a part of Silver.

Huh? What gives. Epic must know something we don't.

Oh yeah, GFW Live will be Vista only. So it won't really affect anyone who wants to stick with XP at this time. But I'm concerned that more and more games will either become Vista only, or they'll have reduced features if you run them on XP because of GFW Live.

I have given up on any other games of FPG that requires you to subscribe and pay for you to use their servers to play any online games. Personally I would rather stick with the older games that you can either play alone or with a group of people together for free either be via lan based. Or creating a virtual server to do so for a game like tron and the quake series can do in either case as examples. I am not oing to be paying another bill just to play a game online. that kinf of money an be spend on other things either for personal use or for car repairs. add ons to your compuers like upgrades. Things of that natures besides eating and other usual thigs that we already pay for.

This is my main (and now redundant) fear. MS seems to pull their lightsabers out again and tell us that our prev. OS software/games will not work on Vista so, "..get with the times...".... and I hate this.

Remember back in 199X when we were so engrossed in Windows 3.x and all of a sudden we couldn't run our software on Win 95? I know this isn't the same case but I'm starting to feel as if MS is pulling it again.

Look... I'm not an anti-MicroSoft jerk like most of these primitives that you hear about, but I do have a lot of grief with MS from back in the past. I love what they are doing with their OS's but I'm upset that I have to start over with a clean slate.

Nevertheless, this may not have to be the case. I haven't checked out Vista yet so I don't have any grounds to say anything... but the rumors I've heard doesn't put it in the lime light... so far...

I don't mean to be premature at this point... Let me come back to this in a distand thread when I have Vista experience because I could be very wrong about the subject...
