I'm setting the Wayback machine here (and Kia would know this for sure...) but I think the C64 was $199 and the 1541 Disk Drive $250. So, back in 1983 that was about $450 for a personal computer/gaming system.
Pretty steep for the time.

Actually, C64 only dropped down to that price in about several years.
It retailed at $500 in 1982 then dropped to $300-200.
Cheap as hell compared to Apple ]['s in 1982 which was retailing for $1,200ish.
(Which is why C64 still retains the record for most computers sold in the Guinness world records.)
