Jack-o-lantern Pics

on Tuesday, October, 31, 2006 9:53 PM
I saw the TRON pumpkin on the main page and thought I'd share some pics and a neat little trick I just tried...

Here are the jack-o-lanterns by my front door tonight...

First with no flash but the outside lights are on.

Now with the outside lights off, again with no flash, and manually over exposed.

And finally the two above pics added in photo shop.

I'm a real novice at photo shop but I thought this turned out rather well and thought I'd share. Anyone else want to post pics of their jack-o-lanterns?

Carl

That's awesome, Carl!

PhotoShop expert or not, you did a really good job with that effect and it turned out really cool looking!

It looks a lot like a professional Halloween card or poster image - the kind that is used in conjunction with some kind of advertisement. Looks great!

Thanks for sharing.

Nifty!

Here's a picture of a picture I dug up of a pumpkin I carved for a team-building excercise at work about 10 years ago.

wwwmwww - Your Jack-O-Lanterns look absolutely beautiful the way you combined the images and made them look all bright and full of glowing life like that! It looks greeting card perfect!

MutoidMan - That's an awesome carving you did of Dilbert! I don't think I've ever seen a Dilbert pumpkin before.

Boingo_Buzzard - Love the skeleton peaking out from behind the tombstones like that. Very cool! Some intricate carving for the skeleton - bet you had to be really careful doing that.

Here's one of our two pumpkins for this year. I didn't really get any good shots of either of them, but I took this photo with my phone-cam and enhanced the glow just a tad (just accenting the original glow, nothing added) to help it stand out a little better. You should all recognize the distinct face on our pumpkin... well, that is if I didn't do too crappy a job. I spent an hour trying to get the face right with an overhead pen before carving it. The mouth was very difficult for me. A freehand artist, I am NOT.

Oh, and our doorbell rang THREE whole times last night. The weather was great - 65 degrees. Last year it was very cold out and we got a good number of trick-or-treaters. I think the tradition is slowly fading away in today's ever more paranoid and increasingly distrustful society (just my opinion). Oh well. Thank God I got to enjoy it back in the day. Magical times they were!

We get slammed every year and this year was no exception. Went through four huge bags of candy. Maybe your house is too frightening to approach Todd

Nice Skellington! Did you see the film in 3-D this year?

And Mutoid: Yeah, working in a cubicle bites. I am completely amazed at how some peoples' voices are able to cut RIGHT through my noise canceling earphones.

Nice Jack-o-lanterns MutoidMan, Boingo_Buzzard, and Todd. Its always nice to see what others are doing. I always free hand mine with a knife so I try not to get too elaborate. A co-worker I was showing the pictures to today was telling me they now make Dremel tool attachments for carving pumpkins. I'd need something like that before attempting the detail you guys have put into yours. Great work all around!!!

Anyone else with pics to share?

Great point, MutoidMan. Many of us are confined to the cubicle farm setting in the office. It looked so cool in TRON. In real life... it just ain't so.

What? My house... frightening?

Now what's so frightening about that?

Nice Skellington! Did you see the film in 3-D this year?

Thanks. I really want to see the 3Dized version of it, but haven't done so yet. We've got a huge IMax theater not far from here. Have you seen it? Is it literally the exact same film that has been meticulously 3Dized or is it a completely remade (re-something) with 3D technology? The film is awesome on its own (in 2D). If they did the 3D right, I can imagine it would be a might bit cooler to experience. Please share your thoughts (or point me to the thread where you did, if I missed it). It's on my list of stuff I really want to experience.

For one pumpkin (not shown here), I just used a kitchen knife. It was very simple in design. For the Jack-O-Skellington, I used a small unattached hacksaw blade. It allows for much better curved surfaces and the ability to trace the pre-drawn lines with great precession. Didn't work so well for tight curves, but overall it made the carving process much more effective in terms of following the desired look and design of the carving.

It's not re-done except to add some depth to the film. There's no "Skellington popping out of the screen" kinda thing, so if you're ONLY going for the 3-D then you might be a bit disappointed.

I however love to see the film on the big screen whenever I can. The print I saw was just plain gorgeous.

I was wrong... its not just Dremel tool attachments. There is a whole Dremel tool just for carving pumpkins.

And here is a funny story. Where I work, we currently have a OEM rep on site from Sweden to help us with a tool issue. Well last Friday afternoon we tool him to Lowes to look for a cable he needed and they had a box of these sitting right by the front door. I immediately knew that is what my co-worker was talking about. The reps first response was "You American's are SO lazy". To which I had to laugh.

Time to dig this thread out again... looks like I'm making this a yearly tradition. Here are my Jack-o-lanterns this year.

And I've learned a new trick with my camera in the process. I no longer need to take two separate pictures to get this effect. For the above picture I had all the outside lights off and used a flash combined with a very long exposure.

Enjoy,
Carl

Dig the Jack-o-lanters, Carl!

I really love the way you make them seem to glow so bright like that. Very cool look.

We got a pumpkin this year, but never got around to carving it. It's sitting outside whole, with its orange, seedy guts intact. It seems wrong, but there wasn't much time this year. Been hectic.

Maybe we'll give it a proper gutting soon. I mean, I'd hate to throw it away intact like that. I'm sure that breaks some kind of Halloween pumpkin law or something.

It's that time of year again...

Next year the background should be different. I was laid off back on the 14th and I'm currently in the middle of a nation wide job hunt.

Happy Halloween,
Carl

Nice pumpkins. This year we didn't get any pumpkins.

@TheReelTodd_

For around two to three years we weren't getting many tricker treaters and such. This year though is a big surprize.

I'm cold and calculating. Don't press my buttons.

The Orange Pumpkin.

I stood in my yard like a statue while young children walked up to the candy bowl. I jumped at them when they walked away.

Video coming up soon.
