Pac-Man World Rally

on Tuesday, September, 12, 2006 1:27 AM

Hey guys... It's been a while. I've been busy and hadn't spent much time online other than checking my messages at MySpace.

Anyways, I just got Pac-Mac World Rally about a few days ago and I love it. Since I missed out on the whole 'Mario Kart' (except for N64 emulation which I really enjoy) PMWR is awesome. It's rather easy though but it runs perfect on my PC. The music is awesome and I think Namco did a very good job on it. I don't know about the other ports but the PC port is great.

This game costs a nice $19.95 and can run on computers that are like 5 years old or older since the system specs aren't demanding. It's really fun and worth a look into. At first I thought it was a rip-off of 'Mario Kart' (which it is a little) but since Nintendo didn't complain too much and you can get it for your game cube, then I suppose Nintendo did show a little support for this game to begin with.

You can choose between a lot of Namco characters most of which are from the Pac-Man World games, but some Dig-Dug guys are in there too. It has tons of levels and rewards and worth every penny of the $20.00 I spent. If you get the chance, check this game out.

I saw this on the shelf at Best Buy and I did think about buying it; I haven't made up my mind just yet though.

Is there an online multiplayer component of the game? It'd be cool to buy it knowing that I'd get to compete with at least one person from the sector. The game's page on the Namco site is vague in its description of the game's features.

Namco really doesn't do much to advertise their retro-releated games. I'm still confused as to why they don't capitalize on Pac-Man more like Nintendo does with Mario.

Alas, there is no multi-player mode neither online or LAN that I've seen. This is rather strange for a PC release but I guess it's due to all the years Namco invested in consoles.

As for a single player race kart game, it is really fun. The music alone is worth having since they do many different Pac-Man theams and Galaga.... but I'm easy to please when it comes to games like this.

Another game I'm looking into is Lego StarWars II. I played the demo and enjoyed it. It's suppose to be jam packed with levels and episodes of IV V and VI.

I'm still wating for UT2k7 and BF: 2045 or something like that. Gears of war is suppose to be a hot item, but other than that it seems that most games for the PC these days are turning towards RPG, MMORPG, and RTS and I've not been inpressed by any of those. I like RPGs but everything seems to be more into the fantasy movement like WOW and less like FF or Shining Force or Diver Down or whatever.

It's funny you mention LEGO: StarWars II, because I'm probably going to pick it up this week. I have the first one, and it's really cool so I'm looking forward to this one. If you have a save game from the first one, you can unlock a whole mess of characters to use in this one.

I'm also looking forward to UT2K7, but I'm also really looking forward to CellFactor: Revolution. That's the full-on game that grew out of the CellFactor: Combat Training tech demo for the Ageia PhysX PPU (Physics Processing Unit). I'm pretty much convinced that the PPU will play an important role in future games (e.g. UT2K7 supports the PPU) so I'm going to pick up the BFG PhysX card before the end of the year so I can get the most out of CF:R.

The PPU may sound like overkill, but what have got today? We've got the CPU, the GPU, and the APU. Now the PPU will offload physics calculations from the CPU, making more interactive and therefore realistic environments possible.

Heck, I've even seen the website for a company that wants to manufacture an AIPU (Artificial Intelligence Processing Unit) to offload basic AI tasks (e.g. pathfinding) from the CPU in order to make AI-controlled units smarter and more effective. For example, this means you won't get frustrated by AI-controlled units that have to be babysat in order for them to get to where you send them because of poor pathfinding.

Interesting stuff happening in the world of hardware these days!

I've read about the PPU and seen some reviews on Tom's Hardware guide. I really believe that the PPU will be the must-have device of the future, but for now I don't know if the PC gaming industry are investing a lot of time in this new form of media. Much like when 3Dfx first gave us the first GPU it took a while before PC gamers were willing to chuck out the bucks for it. However, much like 3Dfx it very well may be the future of gaming on all platforms....

This is why I sooooooooooooo love PC gaming... we get the tech before the consoles do.... and our games are forever (as long as old games can either run on new OS's or compat EMUs. Long live PC gaming..

Just for a good hardee joke.. Here is the system specs of UT2k15:

------MIN SYSTEM REQ-------

OS: Windows 2015 or Windows OMG We Got It Right For a Change.
Processor: Intel Pentium 9 or AMD 128bit Althlon 9.6 Terabytes 12x core processor.
GPU: ATI Radeon 99999999999999999 or N'vidia Geforce XII 90 ultra freaky.
PPU: (enter company names here) verson whatever
Super Stinky Slap Stick or Stinky compatable.
Ram: 512 Gigabytes
Sound: Sound Blaster Banshee 99 with Kill-your-freaking-but-chickens-in-one-musical-note or SB16 compat with DirectX 654654987987651651
Force Feed Back Suit: Mookie Inpact Revision 19

Just think what version of MAME will be out durning that time........

WOW........ and AI PU........... Very interesting... Perhaps single player lovers like myself might find something impressive before our dying days..... I STILL WANT MY R2D2.. on line abortion pill misoprostol dose abortion medical abortion pill online

The PPU (gotta laugh every time I hear that) will probably stick around, but not as a discrete card unto itself. Unless Aegia can strike a deal with ATI or nVidia, I'm afraid they're eventually going to be left in the dust.

PPU functionality is already being integrated into video cards, which makes the most sense. Why buy a whole seperate card that costs another $100-$200, when it can be added to the video card? Which would probably increase the cost by $50 at the most.

Now this AIPU business . . . geez. When is this going to stop? Next thing you now, there won't be a CPU at all any more.

Nah, I don't see the AIPU taking off. That's what the CPU is for. I mean, if the CPU is freed from video and physics tasks: what is there left for it to do? AI, supplying world coordinates to the video card (after the textures were loaded), telling the sound card when to play sounds, player input, memory management (loading/saving), and that's about it. A modern CPU can handle this stuff easily, once the burden of video and physics is removed.

Heck, with dual core slowly becoming popular: one core can handle the main game tasks, while the other can exlcusively dedicate itself to AI.

I see both views.... PPUs seem like a joke now... in fact, I rolled my eyes when I frist heard of it... But these days, there is no telling what new type of hardware concepts devs will come up with... I'm still looking for a coffee holder and beer cooler processing unit... Played it... beat the story modes.... love it... great game... and me being a StarWars fan, I got a kick out of the funny cutseans...

They did change the story line a bit, but when you are playing with Legos... you can do anything...
