I doubt there's a law againsed even discussing the use/existance of them, but there are some pretty strict rules.
I've ran a few Invisionfree forums, and linking to anywhere they are available is a big no-no.
It would be nice if you could keep them for archiving purposes, hate to see those ald games die. But legally I can understand why you can't. It is copyrighted matieral that, through emulation, you can get for free.
My only thing would be that if it's no longer available for profit (Turbo_GFX 16 games, for example), you should be allowed to play it via. PC if someone has recreated it.
But I'm sure it's not that simple. where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online Don't you wish your corruption was hot like me? |

There is one old school videogame company who's vector games have been released into the public domain. I *think* it's Vectrex, but I could be mistaken.

William's line of Pin-Ball driver board ROMs are free to download. I also haven't heard much coming against www.C64hq.com for their disk images.
I say that if game companies aren't going to re-release their old game titles, then they should just give them away. It would make for great PR.

Some have. I know some Zork games are now free, and some other old PC games (I forget which ones offhand). You never know, though, when one of these old software companies would like to re-release some old 2600 or NES games in a "retro anthology". That's a big money maker these days, which is why they’re so protective. |

It is rather unfortunate, but ROM's are technically illegal unless you actually own the original. Josh.exe is correct, you can have the ROM image on your system for 24 hours though before it is illegal. i have no idea why the 24 hr. loophole exists, but o well. I firmly believe that the video game companies such as nintendo should allow us to have ROM's for historical purposes and personal enjoyment because they aren't making any money off them anyway, so as long as we aren't selling them or anything, I don't see a problem of having a copy of every 2600 to N64 ROM ever made. I'm not sure as to whether or not it is illegal to discuss ROM's, but I have trouble believing that one. Btw, there is still one good ROM site out there for all you emulation fans. The url is http://romhustler.net... it has every rom from the 2600 to N64 and then some i think.

I'm no expert on Game Tap (read as: loser dial-up user can't get it), but I believe all their games are downloaded to your PC. They must have deals with the game companies. I believe you pay the monthly fee and then have access to any game they host.
For example, URU Live by CYAN (MYST series) is being relaunched exclusivly through GameTap. You get the account, pay the monthly fee, download the game and play.

I was downloading an ISO of a free Linux OS back in 1999 to see if I could learn something from it. It was something like 622mbs. I had dial up back then and could only be online at night since I had to keep the phone line free during the day. I would use 'Get Right' and start the download, stop it, and cont. the next night.
This took about two weeks just to get the ISO.... and then it came up with a bad CRC error.... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
I finally got it about a month later.... and found out that I didn't like it much since most software is Win compat... It was a double wammy on my part.... but Linux is a great OS. Compucore could give you better details about it than I can.
Anyways.... I know the feeling.... If you ever get DSL, it's amazing what you can do.

Did some one say Linux??? Raising an eye rbow like spoke with his long ppointy ears/ . But seriously I hear ya pain too there. I used to be on dialup as well on a old P1 120 and 24 megs of ram with a 14.4K then a 33.6K modem. Then stopped for a couple of years then went to high speed cable over here. Now I have a mini network over here to the net and at least three machines running linux. with a fourth coming on its way using a silicon Graphics machine. Hugs my lil blue SGI O2 machine.

Yes, I remember the days of dial-up... Actually, I did the same thing Qix did. I left my pc on all night to get a copy of slackware linux, but it didn't support my terrible hardware at the time. Now I have cable (yay!!!), and I am a very devoted *nix user. In the room i'm sitting in, I have four linux boxes. My pc, my sisters pc, my print server (an original indigo imac. lol) and a junk pc for messing around with. I also have a server at another location with a public IP for web hosting and junk... speaking of which, if anyone needs web hosting, i'll give u guys hosting space at $1/month per gigabyte of space if you want it ;-D

My issue is that no comapny wants to claim the small "township" I live in.
The cable company won't provide it, because there is enough demand to make it profitable. The phone service won't provide it because "The profit dosen't justify the expense of rewiring the entire neighborhood."
So basically, I'm going to have to make sure where ever I move to (SOMEDAY) already has high(er) speed internet access available.

I live in a very small (but growing) town... A little place called Marion, Illinois. It's at the southern tip and Kentuckey is just a 30 min drive away. Illinois SUCK!!!!!!!! All of our money goes ony to our one big city and Springfield.... They don't like us down here...
But a bunch of blood sucking vermin called 'Phone Companies' did do one thing right, they provided us with DSL... and because of this, I'm getting a 4.0 mbps (throughput at 500-700kps) for only $30 a month... with no BS in the contract.
When the blood sucking vermin attacks your town, don't go with Verizion.... but go with a much less blood sucking vermin provider because you should get a much better connection with a much cheaper price....
.... as you can tell... I hate phone companies... They are just as crooked as Insurance companies, Laywers, Politicts, and people like me who can't spell... lol...

It smells worst than that but thanks for being nice... lol...
Rend Lake, however, is still a very beautiful place. No smells there (except for the horses that the cowboys bring in, but I'm use to it from my rodeo days). Want to go RV-ing sometime... lol...
Nikster, I don't know if you ever made it to Marion but if you have you just wont believe how much it has changed. There are all kinds of crazy crap happening here. Big businesses moving in (nothing worth working at still) and we are about to get our very own Minor Legue statium.... Bush Gardens is thinking (again) about putting a park just east of Marion...
Carbondale (the SIU town) doesn't seem to be growing much and they are the biggest town between Paducah, KY and Cape Girardeau, MO.... and that isn't saying much.. lol... but we love it... :P
Oh... BTW... I was up in Mt. Vernon over the weekend... It doesn't look like it changed much, but rummor has it that General Tire might be shutting down. Apperently they ran into a slew of law suites from employees... but it's just a rummor... it would be a shame if they did shut down, though... Not many factories around Southern Illinois.
