Time Capsule Belvedere

on Friday, August, 11, 2006 1:21 AM
June 15, 1957...

A brand new 1957 Plymouth Belvedere was lowered into the ground and burined in a time capsule, along with other trinkets, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as part of the state's semicentennial. The time capsule serves as a prize to a 50 year contest. The car and its contents will be awarded to the person who most accurately predicted, back in 1957, the population of Tulsa circa 2007. The winner, or winner descendent, must still be living in the state to obtain the prize.

I just hope the sleek shark finned beauty isn't rusted out. The worst thing to do to a car is let it sit for looooong periods of time. Ah, The Forward Look, a personal automotive favorite of 50s design for me. I've always been interested in this time capsule Plymouth. Lets hope the old gal comes out as pristine as the day it was built. You never know, if they sealed it well enough it might still have that new car smell.

It's a shame Plymouth was killed by DaimlerBenz. Seems sad they can't be present once this classic is brought out of the ground.

I've read about that!

Oh, how cool would it be to get your hands on that low/no milage beauty?

I would think that if the capsule remained airtight and the atmosphere inside was of relatively low humidity then there shouldn't be much deterioration, at least in regards to the chassis and sheet metal. The seats, tires, and rubber hoses might be another story all together.

I'm rooting for the car to come out in great shape!

Thanks for the link to the time capsule website; I never knew it existed.

While we're on the subject of Mopars, I've always liked the '61 Dodge Polara with reverse tailfins. The following pictures are of a '61 made for Mexico, so it's a little different; it's an interesting read:

Nice 61 Polara. The reverse fins are amazing. Really shows how the designers experimented. I've got a "Cars of the 60's" book that's filled with classic car illustrations and promotion photos, and the Polara has some nice ones, specially the 1960 edition.

Here's more info for you all about the Belvedere:

Included with the Plymouth is a 5 gallon can of gasoline (in case in 2007 gasoline was no longer used), a jar of Oklahoma crude oil, and in the glovebox, fourteen bobby pins, a ladies compact plastic rain cap, several combs, a tube of lipstick, pack of gum, facial tissues $2.73 in bills and coins and a pack of cigarettes with matches, an unpaid parking ticket, and a bottle of tranquilizers - all items that might have been found in a woman's purse in 1957. In addition, the winner of the “Tulsarama” Plymouth contest will receive a $100 trust fund that by 2007 will have accrued 50 years’ worth of interest.
This gives me more hope that the car will be in good shape. Newsreels of the time show the car being lowered by a crane into a concrete-lined hole. The car itself was wrapped with plastic and chemically treated foil and paper and encased in a steel capsule that was painted and welded shut.

If not, pass me a tranquilizer from the glovebox.

For the really awsome gallery I lend you this one Mutoid.
A musuem and gift site devoted to 1950's commercial illustration art. Lots of car art there, in full retro beauty that only the two-toned pastel flavored 50's could bring. Get your drool bucket out, you'll need it.

Ok, be honest - you just dig the car, or were you going after the TRON actor tie-in?

I never saw the film, but I thought the car in the film looked cool in the commercials I saw on TV. It had three headlights. on line abortion pill misoprostol dose abortion medical abortion pill online

Welcome. I probally should correct myself, it's not just 50's illustration, retro illustration in general, but the 1950's is a major theme for them. They've really branched outcompared to when I first found them. The site is always updating. In their blog you can keep track with new material they scan and even learn what the illustration was for in some cases. I love retro illustraion, specially the Jetson-like vision of the future the older generation had. Optimisim at it's finest, the way the future should be.

Oh that site seriously rocks. It had me at the intro page with the train artwork.

And the photos are cool, too!

They did have a cool vision of the future back then, didn't they? Well, you know what Yogi Berra said: "The future ain't what it used to be."

Yes... yes they did. One that culture today ridicules at times cause it was overly optimistic. Rather sad I think. A push-button future where anything is possible, what's so silly about that anyway? The sky wasn't the limit then... imigination was.

There's one image from plan59 that's my all time favorite from the whole site:

How can you NOT love it!? The little red spaceranger really means business. Just look at his expression! One move and he'll shoot your face off with his atomic blaster.

Wow, I've really hijacked my own thread.

Nothing at all silly about it, not in the least.

If I had my way, their future would be our present.

And that little red space ranger and his squad rule!

Well... OK.. kinda. However, I have no desire to own a racehorse.

I just think it's awesome looking... rare..odd..historic.. and stands for something. Too bad it's out of my price range.

I'd also like a Checker Marathon (Kalamazoo iron) or a nice AMC AMX or Javelin AMX (Kenosha iron.)

I believe the red bows that appear to be in the red space ranger's hair would make him a her. Unless there is some other explaination for those.
