Another World

Anyone ever play the game Another World (a.ka. "Out Of This World") published by Delphine Software? Or Future Wars? The guy who did a lot of work for them has a website here. Pretty interesting to read some history. You can also buy Another World to play on the PC for like $10 from his site. I bought it. It plays quite close to the original for the Amiga 500... if not exactly. Even the sounds are perfect. I actually don't detect any differences...

And now, I must find out if I can buy Future Wars from somewhere...

Never played Future Wars.

But Another World? Oh yes. That game was incredible for its time. In fact, I still think it looks good even today.

I also played its semi-sequel. Flashback: The Quest for Identity. That was another great game.

I use to play this game all the time on my Amiga. It was rather hard to play at first, but after the first few levels, then the game moved faster.

The gfx was ahead of its time. I always loved the concept that he worked at a cyclotron (or atom crusher) and when lighting struck the place.... just a really cool concept.

I never heard of Future War... I'm very interested in checking it out...

Was the same game engine from Another World used in the game Flash Back?

I was recently thinking about picking up Out Of This World. I only had the opportunity to play it once for a few minutes, I think on a C64, way back when it first came out, and I still remember thinking how cool it looked.

"We are, after all, not God." - Cmdr. J. J. Adams
"C is for cookie. That's good enough for me." - Cookie Monster
"If money is the root of all evil, I'd like to be a bad, bad man." - Huey Lewis & the News

Most recent PC game collection update: 04/12/2012. Check it out!

Me too. I'm playing it for the PC and it has great animation/motion for the characters; good detail for the graphics; great sounds. I still am impressed by several things regarding this game.

Never played Future Wars.
Future Wars was an adventure game with mouse point-and-click interaction and studying of screens. Less action, but still really good, detailed graphics for its time and an interesting concept. Future Wars and Another World were just in a class of their own in terms of quality. Psygnosis put out some really good quality games, too... but I liked Delphine's games, too. In Future Wars, you start out as a window washer it's neat to see where the story takes you. I love the opening graphics and much more. The semi-transparent text boxes that you read and interact with in Future Wars were ahead of their time. In business and in video games that come out even today, I still try to emphasize the power of semi-transparent boxes. Lots of people seem to only think to use solid 100% opaque background boxes. Whenever I mention semi-transparent boxes, I have flashbacks to Future Wars. A beautiful concept.

Here was the opening shot in Future Wars (from the anotherworld.fr website:
Imagine you are that window washer character. This is the opening scene. You have no idea what to do. So you have to begin exploring things around you; solve puzzles. You click on the scaffolding buttons and paint can and stuff to try and figure out what to do. I was always amazed with how tiny the pixels were for this game and how small things you interact with could be. Most games before this (and many games after) made things blatantly obvious as showing you what you have to interact with by making them big objects or whatever. I appreciated the intracacies of this.

Ahh... I see... Future War is kinda of like the old LucasArts Adventure games.

I've played a few of those. "Zack Mc Cracken and the Alien Mind Benders" and "Lisure Suit Larry" were my fav... but then I got really into the CD adventure games like "11th Hour", "Myst", and "Zork Nemesis"....

Do they still make Adventure games like that these days for retail? I've played some freeware games like them as well, but haven't seen anything new on the market... Unless you include "Knights of the Old Republic", but I think that is considered an RPG.

Anyways... That link to "Another World" is really cool. I downloaded the demo and I'll be checking it out when I get done with a few clients. I already have the game on my Amiga emu, but this demo has improved gfx... Really nice.

Cool! It took me a short while to configure the keys how I wanted them, and to get used to using the keyboard, but it soon became 2nd nature. I need to get my an old fashioned joystick and USB adapter, though, for ultimate experience when playing retro games like this. The demo is only one 'section' long -- not very long. But it should give you an idea of how 'true to the Amiga' it feels and maybe will inspire you to buy the unlock key I'm having fun playing this game again, and it's nice to know I can pick it up and play it any time I want now.

PS: I think there is some similarity with Future Wars to the old Lucas adventure games (play-style wise), like Labyrinth and others. I loved Lucas adventure games, too.

Seems like Syberia was similar to those styles; so I enjoyed Syberia. I need to get Syberia II one of these days. These games came out for the PC within the past 6 or so years.

I picked up a PS2-like controller for my PC a few years ago called the "P880" by Saitek... It's a little buggy when switching between Anolog and the D-Pad, but I found ways around it.

I remember seeing Syberia (not to get confused with Cyberia and Cyberia 2 shooters for the PC) a few years ago. It really looked good but I never had the chance to play it. It got great reviews.

Wow, Future Wars looks pretty cool! I didn't know Delphine made adventure games.

Qix, yeah I think Flashback used the same engine as Out of this World. It was basically the same type of game, but in a completely different setting.

You wake up in a jungle on some alien planet, with amnesia. You don't know who you are. So the whole point of the game is to find out who you are and what you're doing on that planet.

A lot of people thought the character in Flashback was the same one from Out of this World. The creators denied that, but I wonder if maybe there wasn't some truth to it. Even though an official sequel did show up later. I think maybe this was their idea for a sequel first, but then they went and did a more straightfoward follow-up that wasn't so dramatically different from the first.

Flashback also reminded me a bit of the original Prince of Persia games, oddly enough.

Yeah... because the Gfx and feel was too close not to be...

Oh... and I completely know what you mean about the P.O.P. type of game play. I thought so too. Flashback was a good game...

Ok... Picture time... I can't remember where I found this at, but since most of you here know about the Amiga.. you might like this...

I so love the Amiga.
