The best of The Electric Company

on Friday, June, 09, 2006 3:59 PM
I just picked up this DVD set a few days ago and my wife and I have been enjoying this prime example of the golden days of educational children's television ever since.

Man I loved this show!

I just wish they would release all the episodes! Yes, I know this means a ton of DVDs . . . the show ran for at least 6 years I think. That's a lot of episodes. But there are bound to be things I'd like to see again, that aren't in the "best of" clips they picked.

Failing that, how about bringing the show back to television? I would still watch it! I have such fond memories of The Electric Company. They don't make kid's shows like this any more.

You know, there has been a lot of re-living and re-enjoying our childhood activities going on here. From the TV shows we watched as kids, to the films, to the video games we played, and music too - some of us seem to really be enjoying it (including myself).

It just dawned on me. Something I can't believe I haven't picked up on until just now.

This is the kind of behavior associated with... ** gasp ** middle-aged folks.

Could it be?

For so many years, I just looked ahead. The past couple of years (give or take) I've been looking back and reminiscing about the good old days. I've been playing Atari again, and toying with retro themes and visuals in projects. I've been wanting to see some old films (old from the 80's old) again because I enjoyed them so much as a kid.

Am I... are we... middle aged?

We're in our mid-30's. 40 isn't all that far away. Sadly, I'm closer to 40 than I am to 30.

Is this what middle-aged folks do? Are we middle aged?

I'm kind of waiting for one of the younger members (20-something) to confirm or poke fun at us.

Man, I miss my 20's. I really do. Those were the years I should have taken advantage of.

Sorry - I know this is about that show we all grew up on - The Electric Company. And I can STILL clearly hear in my head "Hey you guys!!!!!" and the opening theme starting to play. I clearly remember the Spider Man bits they would show and how cool they were. I clearly remember that guy... can't remember his name... he played the Blue Beatle. For some reason, I really loved the Blue Beatle as a kid. I'm sure if I sat and watched this show again, I'd be flooded by memories that I have not thought about since I was probably 5 or so.

Today at work, I watched the pinball song from Sesame Street. What made me do that? Just need my fix, I guess. Actually, that theme has been joked about around the office on and off lately, but it's a classic that I love... again, from my early years. Brings back memories. So... am I middle-aged? I'm not quite ready for middle-aged. I haven't felt the need for a hotrod car yet. That's in my favor.

Don't worry too much. The standard age of indulging in retro based nostalgia is the early twenties. Ask your average 21 year old about the Gargoyles cartoon or Power Rangers for more info.

For the record, most people have their first mid-life crisis at about 23.

Thanks!

Actually, mine came as I approached 30. I remember feeling like my 20's would go on forever, until my late 20's. I became increasingly depressed until I reached 30. Then I kind of stayed really down and off for a few years until I slowly came back out of it around 33 or so. The wife was a big help - she's awesome!

Funny thing - in my 20's, I broke out the old Atari and laughed at how these awful games once entertained me. In my mid-30's, I rather enjoy these "awful" games a lot. What's up with that? Oh well, at least I seem to have come to my senses.

When I was 19 I thought I was old. When I was 22 I looked back and realized I was a child at 19. When I was 24 I knew I was old and wished I had realized how young I was at 22. When I was 25 I decided I was wasting time on something that is purely relative and moved on with my life.

30 seems a bit young now, perhaps?

I'm sorry... But you were right the first time. Atari is terribly outdated and laughable. In truth, it's all about the Colecovision. The height of gaming technology.

I can't argue with that. It was indeed the best system of the day. But we only had an Atari, so those memories were etched in my memory, thus making it fun to play it again, and relive the memories.

Crap.

Sorry, MutoidMan, for getting off topic like that.

Favorite Electric Company character anyone?

My favorites were Spider Man (he wasn't unique to The Electric Company, but regularly featured there) and The Blue Beatle.

Yea... I think your right.... I spent yeasterday watching old Voltron and Pole Pasision cartoons. Not to mention playing with my new AT-AT that I bought for a dollar at a yard sell... I almost didn't get it because this mean 7 year old was going to beat me up... But I got my revenge... I told all his friends that he eats buggers.... so there... lol..

Just kidding.... but I did get that old AT-AT for a buck... It was a bunch of old folks who cleaned out their attic and decided to have a yard sell....

You know... I'm 29 going on 12... I really am taking a major interest in collecting all the cool toys that I either had back then or always wanted. I found a box with some old stuff in it and my old (and broken) SoundWave transformer was there. I loved that old thing as a kid. I almost cried thinking about how I have changed so much since I was a kid. SoundWave was the robot that got me interested in sound effects. I learned all about vocoders and other voice enhaments from being inspired by him. I so miss my child hood...

That is one of the main reasons as to why I'm here... and also that Tron made so much of an impact on my life...

I'm really lucky to find you guys so that we can talk about such cool stuff like this together...

You guys have it all wrong, and I'm here to set you straight.

We recognize that they made some great entertainment and great toys when we were growing up, that's all.

That's not to say that the entertainment they make today isn't up to snuff. On the contrary, a lot of today's cartoons are just as good and better than the cartoons of my youth, and I enjoy them. I just happen to still enjoy the earlier shows.

You liked the cartoons from the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's as well from as the 70's and 80's when you were growing up, didn't you? I sure did. I still do. There are cartoons from the 90's that I liked, and wouldn't mind seeing again. Freakazoid!, anyone? How about the Batman cartoon series from the early 90's? Does it make me old just because I'd like to see them again?

As we older viewers know, PBS from back in the 70's and 80's simply rocked. I tell you what, some of that then-new live action stuff on Saturdays was really a lot of fun, and the old serials from the 30's and 40's were cool too.

Toys are a different matter, however. I would say there seemed to be more toys from the 70's, 80's and maybe early 90's that were really packed with a level of imagination (or at least their premises were) and coolness that you generally just don't see in today's toys. There are some cool toys, to be sure, but not many.

To sum it up: We are experienced and wise, not old and close-minded. Get over the number of years under your belt and feel a twinge of pity for the kids of today who aren't exposed to the variety of entertainment that we have been. We are the fortunate ones, my friends.

Hmmm.

Two quickies that come to mind, as not to derail the topic...

Lost in Space. It was just a fun campy show. Jupiter 2 is the ultimate space family camper in my humble opinion. My dream is to get a real B-9 Robot in the distant future.

I also remember Galaxy High, liking the whole school in space concept, plus the intro music stays with ya.

Back to Electric Company...
I probally saw the show when I young, but just don't remember it, though I did a youtube search and the intro music sounds so darn familiar.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online
