Louie De Martinis Interview

on Saturday, April, 08, 2006 12:12 AM
No new thread for the interview? I couldn't find one, so wanted to start one to thank Louie for answering all our questions! It was neat to read some of the insights there. I wonder if he has a website set up to showcase some of his artwork...

Google search, here we come!

Here's a copy/paste of the interview for quick reference:
Hi Louie, welcome to Tron-Sector. There’s been a great deal of excitement here about the new comic. >>> Hi Guys! Thanks for the questions I’ll try to do my best here.

When did you first get the ''comic drawing bug''?>>> I’ve always loved to draw, there’s no question about that. You just have to take a look around my place, I’m buried under comic books and artwork everywhere. So drawing comics was a natural thing for me.

What other comics have you had the pleasure of working with?>>> This is actually the first time I’ve gotten to work on a comic book, prior to Tron I had primarily worked in the field of animation and design work. So I’m totally psyched about it, especially since I’m getting to work on Tron.

[c=yellow]Did Tron present any artistic challenges you hadn't faced with other comics?
>>> The major challenge was trying to stay true to Tron world. And at the same time bring to it a certain mood and atmosphere that reflects the psychological aspect that is being introduced. I wanted to visually distinguish between the Real word and the Tron world.

Has Tron had any influence on you as an artist?>>> Most definitely, Tron and other films such as Blade Runner, Alien, and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 did have an impact on me. As an artist I’m always experimenting at how many different ways I can tell a story and what looks best visually.

>>> Tron was way ahead of it’s time and watching Tron on the big screen the visuals were stunning, so it stuck with me.

Have you been a long-time fan of TRON, or is TRON something new to you that started with this project? >>> The concept and idea behind the movie of being digitized into this different world are pretty cool. It’s hard to imagine what that would be like, but they did an awesome job of interpreting that world. It was ahead of it's time, I don't think even back then that they knew how important computers were to become over the next two decades.

What is your favorite art medium to work with (e.g. digital, watercolor, oils, pencils, etc.)? >>> I like to work with all mediums but I’d have to say penciling is number one on my list. It’s just great having an idea and being able to put it down on paper. It’s quick and painless.

If you were a program in the TRON universe, what kind of program would you like to be or what purpose would you serve (you can even invent one)?>>> A virus exterminating program lol

>>> If I could be in the Tron world the first thing I would want to do is ride a lightcycle!

What initially attracted you to the project?>>> When I found out the project was Tron, I was sold on it, plain and simple. It was a great challenge trying to bring the world of Tron to life in a vastly different medium than either movies or video games.

How have you found working with Disney and SLG?>>> The experience has been very positive, early on, Disney's involvement included approving of the design work for Tron and several other aspects of the book. But I deal mostly with SLG and they have given me quite a bit of artistic freedom. They’re a great bunch of guys.

What long-term ambitions do you have in the comic world?>>> Right now Tron is my major focus, I like to take things one day at a time. Hopefully I can continue to work in this field on other great projects.

>>> I might have several personal projects that are in very early development where I am creator or co-creator, so I'm looking forward to new challenges, but that's a long way off

If Louie does not have a website up, he should create one. I've seen some of his other work, and it is fantastic. Very diverse, which is something not all artists can claim.

Admittedly, I may be a bit on the biased side in regards to his work. Hopefully, some more of his work is accessible online. Then others can chime in with their untainted opinions.
