Qix77 planning to buy a console?

on Thursday, March, 23, 2006 5:22 AM
OMG!!!!! Did I really say that??????

For those of you who know me, know that I'm strickly a PC gamer. The last console I ever owned was a SEGA Genesis and I pitched it for an Amiga computer back in 1992. I've been very harsh towards today's consoles and now I'm planning to buy one.

The "Nintendo Revolution"....

Why?

Because Nintendo has claimed that the system will be backwards compatable with games as far back as the NES thru Game Cube and it makes it more than just a currently gaming system, but a retro relic as well. They will let you down load roms (perhaps modified) of their old systmes (except for Game Cube games) for a small price online... but I'm sure that some one will later hack the system so I can play all the ROMs I already have on my PC. If so, then this is the console to buy.

Why not an X-BOX 360 or a PS3???? Don't get me started. I have a PC and my fanboy-ism and we could go into a huge argument about tech specs, gfx, ect... but with that aside, the Nintendo Revolution has a great history and a large library of games from the past and I just can't pass this one up.

Besides... A lot of PS and X-Box games are released for the computer. Nintendo (and I mean Nintendo brand.. not Capcom or other third parties) is very tight with their games.... the only way you can play them on anything else is through the power of emulation... (Nintendo emulators for the Dream Cast are still being updated... go fig..)...

I know everyone who knows me is in shock about this... but I really am sober... but don't be calling me a console gamer anytime soon... I still stick by my guns... uhhh... PC with great fanboy-ism and geeky-ness like I always have... So there.... :P .... lol....

Now I need a drink...

I'm definitly getting a ps3...the tech is just amazing. Even just as a blue ray player its such an amazing bargin! And it supports the back library of the ps2,ps1 (for the most part). But everyone knows the ps3 rant and the 360 rant. I've been thinking about getting a cube for a long time...so i might end getting a rev just so i can play through the awsome games ive missed. The rev will be cheap..it will be 'simple' and it will offer the quarky and wonderful nintendo gameplay most of us love.

Honestly though...most of the amazing console games never get ported to the pc (besides mame). Few of them get ported to other consoles. Pc gaming is great...but its not going to be so different from console gaming in the coming years.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

Well... Yes and no...

For instances, all the GTA games were ported to the PC and was visually better than their console counter parts. In fact, only the best of console ports really make it (if it wasn't a mulit platform to begin with).

PCs have been ahead of consoles mainly because of the avalibilty of high-end upgradable hard ware. A lot of PC gamers get upset when a PC game becomes a multi-platform release because they degrade the gfx quailty so that it is easier to port to consoles with lower tech specs. Much like Dragon's Lari 3D and Dues Ex 2.

But the console market is bigger than the PC gaming market because consoles are easier to use, the avaliablity is wider spread (EB's PC game shelves are shrinking), and it's way more cost efficent.

Don't get me wrong.... I'm not really against consoles... I just joke about it because I'm such a PC fanboy... I'm not going to knock anyone who buys an X-BOX or a PS3... because when it all comes down to it, we are all fellow gamers...

However, I do believe that the PC gaming experience will always be different. Mainly because certain genres don't work well with consoles and vice versa... FPS and star figher sims are good examples of that...

But PC gamers also have different demands... For instance, a game like "Super Smash Bros" wouldn't be a wise release for the PC unless it was sold under a $15 price tag... But a game like "Freespace 2" or "Mech Warrior Games" wouldn't sell well for a console because of it's demanding controls, and it's angle of game play...

So there will always be a difference... but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing... just different..

Infidel! You shall be punished most severely for this!

Seriously though...

I'm too into PC gaming to really get into console gaming. The only reason I've got a PS2 in the house is because my brother-in-law lives with us and it's his. I only play a few PS2 games, and not very often.

Right now, I'm thinking about spending about $300.00 on one of those new BFG PhysX cards that are supposed to enable a whole new level of realism in games. The demos look awesome, and a lot of upcoming games are going to take advantage of the PhysX chip, e.g. UT2007.where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill onlineabortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

I'm a huge pc gamer as well.

But games like ico, rez, shadow of the colosus. Dozens of games like that arent on the pc.

As for the two getting more similar. Just think of it as pcs are becoming more media boxes, and consoles are becoming more like pcs. I really like WSAD for my fps's but you cant beat rpgs at 2am with your little box of gaming goodness.

The physx card is awsome...i want one badly. It might be cheaper then $300 The cards are actually out right now, but you have to sign an nda to get one and be a prominent game/mod devolper. The public launch is coming soon...ageia is pretty much just waiting on game support before launching.

Due to my job up until last year I had to have and know about every concole. Now that I work in mobile gaming, I could care less about most new consoles.

The games I like tend to be PC based, and the few that are not are on PS2 which i have covered. 360, Revolution, PS3? Meh. Probably won't waste my cash unless there is some amazing game I can't live without.

I so sorry... lol...

But you did hit the nail on the head.... Investing in PC hardware is always a good investment..

You are such a smart consumer... I'm not going to buy the new Nintendo untill I am sure that the hardware doesn't have any issues... otherwise, I'll just wait till they correct it...

Besides... I got a high end PC.... so no worries.. ... (a little myspace love for you nik..)..

I'm more of a console gamer now... because the games that I really like aren't even out for the computer at all. Oh well. =/

But that still doesn't mean I won't play Tron 2.0 on my computer.

I want a new colsole when they come out... but my last console was nothing but an expensive dust-collector.

I ended up with all of FIVE games for my Nintendo Game Cube. There were (are) actually one or two others that I don't have that did look interesting... but obviously not interesting enough to get me out there buying them.

I'm looking forward to the upcoming Zelda game for the Game Cube - I chose to skip over the cell-shaded Wind Walker (didn't care for Toon-Zelda). Oddly enough, I'm expecting a big let down with the new Zelda game. Not sure why. It looks cool, but will it capture me the way Ocarina of Time did? Probably not. We'll see.

I've seen some semi-cool games for the other consoles, but nothing major. I feel like games are becoming like modern films - all just copies of each other with some moderately updated visuals. Blah.

I'm not planning on getting any of the next generation consoles. But I am keeping an eye on the Nintendo Revolution. The concept made me laugh at first, but I am curious about it now. What will they do with such a different controller scheme? Will it be fun? Will it be a huge controlling problem that just pisses everyone off? Will it just be lame? Time will tell. I'm waiting for some feedback before I even consider getting one seriously.

Oh, and I also have a feeling that the next generation consoles and games there for will basically just be slightly prettier versions of the last generation's games. I've seen little improvement visually since the last generation (source - TV commercials and some screen caps on the net of Xbox 360). Are all the next gen consoles just going to offer slightly better graphics and some multiplayer options (that we already have in abundance on a PC)? Is that it? ** yawn **

I'd rather take the money I would spend on a console, and invest it in upgrades for my PC. My main PC is going on 4 years old now, basically. This is the longest I've ever gone between upgrades. I usually upgraded every two years.

I just figure that there's so much more a PC can do, aside from playing games. But with the right hardware, a PC can even stand almost toe-to-toe right now, against the Xbox 360. And with the next video card generation, the PC will take the lead again.

Doug Lombardi, at Valve, made an encouraging comment about the future of PC gaming, that really surprised me.

http://www.firingsquad.com/features/doug_lombardi_valve_interview/page3.asp
The PC games business has never been more interesting. The transition to the next generation consoles is taking a bit longer than everyone expected, and leaving a crater in the industry's revenue projections. Meanwhile, the graphics and processing power available on the PC today already rivals what's to come on those consoles, and the online business models for PC gaming is already light years ahead of the consoles with services such as Steam and money-printing phenomena such as World of WarCraft and Lineage.

Nice to hear from an industry insider, who isn't predicting gloom and doom on the PC for a change!

Well... It's just because of Nintendo's new system should play all the old games too... going back to the old NES...

If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have even thought about it. I'm PC gamer all the way...

I'm also building a new computer soon.... I'll have to send in the pics when I do... but it will be later this year..

Actually, being that I bought my PC from Falcon Northwest, I can order a BFG PhysX card today. I know because I just called them up and got the pricing for it.

I'm going to wait a little until there are a few games available to make use of it and I read some reviews of actual performance. But if it's really what it's cracked up to be, I will get one.

So I'll have a CPU, dual GPU's, an APU, and a PPU to boot! The more hardware, the better, I always say!

Hey... I'll take you up on that... I'm always up for a good tech talk, and even though I'm a computer tech, I'm still learning.

Plus we can debate, inform, and learn from one another. Once I get the time, I'll send you my e-mail address... Thanks MM..

I used to be a big gamng fan and a console gaming as well a long time ago on a planet far far away on an old IBM XT with a 4.77 mhz processor and a CGA monitor in the early 90's. And my really old intellivision since the early 80's. No I am not much into them since everything seems to be more power and hardware out the wazoo for these things. Gotta eed xyz in order to play anything that is a decent game these days. Now with 5 systems over here that I am using these days. I would rather combine the power of all 5 of these things to do something else than play games. Not to put the games down by any means. Just looking at all the upgrades that I have done since the early 90's and seen where the technology has brought us these days. The glory of the old 8088 processor and its seperate math co-processors to today single with math-co built in now with the option of dual chips on the same die. And a option that both intel and AMD have with 64 bit processing. Power rating is different with it coming close to what INtel has as for speed rating on their CPU chips.

Technology has change a lot over the years. And there is still a long way to go in it. There is still a lot of competition with the other risc based Processors that both intel and AMD need to do in order to become more effective. I mean compare the chips that are being used in todays compters that you can buy for home use and compare it to the ones like Sun Microsystem uses, or what is being used in the Cray super computers, SGI workstation, etc.

2 Legit 2 quit

End of line

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

Well, I'm a console gamer and always will be - mainly due to 1st party games that will never see the light of day on a PC.

My PC is for porn, chatting and taxes.

My consoles are for gaming!

I currently enjoy my N64 (GoldenEye, Perfect Dark and WWF No Mercy 4 LIFE!), Sega Dreamcast (Shenmue owns your face, as do Jet Grind Radio and Phantasy Star Online - and Samba De Amigo + Maracca controllers = BEST.PARTY.GAME.EVER), Nintendo GameCube (Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, Viewtiful Joe and F-Zero GX are four great reasons to own the system), X-Box (Panzer Dragoon Orta is just amazing, as are Jet Set Radio Future and Shenmue 2) and X-Box 360 (Oblivion = BEST.RPG.EVER and X-Box Live/Marketplace take the concept of a console system to a whole different level).

I'm very interested in the Nintendo Revolution as (a.) it's about damn time the Big N realized that, hey, people do like online gaming and (b.) I'm interested in some of the games being developed with the controller - like Red Steel (a 3rd Party exclusive from Ubisoft that allows you to play in a FPS game in modern-day Tokyo using katanas and pistols - you can swing your controller like your sword and it impacts the game play).

I'm interested in the PS3 because it allows for complete backwards compatability and upgrading of graphics for all PS1 and PS2 games - that's a damn cool trick and one that will be great IF they pull it off. Plus, Blu-Ray players built-in, which is why I won't buy one at launch. PS2s were buggy as hell at launch, so what can we expect from the new Blu-Ray technology when it hasn't even been tested yet with consumers?

But, here's hoping Nintendo gets back on track with the Revolution (being able to download Nintendo games from all of its systems, including games only released in Japan, is a cool perk) and that Sony FINALLY delivers on a console.

Anyone remember the PS2s promise of "Toy Story 2-quality graphics?" What about the new "Emotion Engine?"

Yeah, that's what I thought.

My biggest reason for being a console gamer over PC is really quite simple:

My Movie Room.

I can play games on my consoles on a 48" HDTV with 7.1 Surround Sound in a comfortable chair.

I can't do that on my PC - no matter how powerful it is.

THAT'S why I'll continue to be a console supporter.

Well, that and the fact that you won't find Metroid Prime or F-Zero GX on a PC!

Actually, PS2's promise was delivered, it's just that some companies didn't use it. -_- Okay, not some. Most. Go figure.

Good luck, Qix!

As for me: Definitely getting a PS3 and Nintendo Revolution. I might wait a bit on PS3 if I don't have the money for it by then.

Wait, what am I saying? I have a job now. x_x

They were? I have one from the original US launch and it still works fine (knock on wood). In fact, I escaped the whole bad power cord recall because I had an older one.

Maybe I just got lucky.

As for the PS3, we'll see what games they have at launch time. If it's nothing mind blowing then I can wait.
