An Interview with TheReelTodd

on Sunday, March, 05, 2006 9:27 PM

I thought members of TRON-Sector in particular, might be interested in reading the interview I just posted that I did with TheReelTodd. (Yes, I finally posted it! Sorry for the delay, Todd. )

Enjoy! TheReelTodd was a fun and entertaining person to interview. I enjoyed this one, very much. I've also done some earlier interviews too, like one with Xistence.

Hey - that's one nifty interview!

He he he.

You know, I read a couple of your other interviews and really enjoyed them. I think it's great that you're taking time to formally interview the creative and talented minds behind TRON 2.0's custom maps and mods, and TRON inspired media artists. We've all seen the wonderfully done custom game grids and arenas, but the people behind them have been relatively unknown, other than meeting up with them on the game grid or other forums. Your one-on-one interviews provide an interesting take on what goes in to the creative process of the people who love TRON and have been inspired by TRON.

I hope your TRON 2.0 News Blog is getting some good attention from the TRON fans and community in general. You have put some good effort and time in to the stories you present and it shows.

And I enjoyed my little part with the interview I gave. It gave me the opportunity to talk about a couple of my favorite things - filmmaking/visual artistry and TRON! Sorry I didn't have much to say in my interview. You know how I always seem to have trouble finding enough words to express myself.

Thanks.

Yeah, I think some people's works are being seriously overlooked.

Hmm . . . I have no idea what you're talking about, TheReelTodd.

Hehehe. I thought it was great to hear some more insight into the creation of your Cutting Room Floor video, and yourself in general. Like I said, the fact that you worked with simple things to create such an amazing video, is impressive and inspiring.

Not anymore!

Whether it gets a lot of attention or not. I think it's great that you're doing the interviews. I'm sure it will at least attract some good attention from the regular TRON 2.0 online crowd.

I think it's neat to learn more about the custom mappers and modders - the thoughts they have, what goes in to their design, etc. It adds a new level of depth and allows personalities and insight to be attached to the creative work.

Cool stuff.

You know - if I knew the first thing about map making (which I do not), I'd make TheReelArena! I'd take as many visual elements as I could, and build an arena... or probably custom DM map out of them all. I think that would be cool. Then people could play in my strange ode to 80's techno-geek memories!

Would it be cool to be walking through the large purple grid tunnel to find Wangmite and Chungmite (the two alien googly-eyed heads) on the other side floating around? How about going a little further and having to avoid the handy-fingers of doom on the way to the TOMY TRON room? He he he. Not sure any of that could actually be done in a TRON 2.0 map, but I guess we'll never know. I don't have a clue how to do it, nor the time to learn. I think it would be neat though.

Wow, your description for TheReelArena sounds very cool. I'd love to see something like that. It would be a break from the norm.

Yeah . . . unfortunately, lots of time is exactly what you need if you want to make a map. The learning curve is steep at first. It took me almost a year to get familiar enough with DEdit to put out my CTB map. And even then, while technically it's well done, the artistic side is lacking. So if I'd tried to both make it look really good and have cool tricks in it, it would have taken me ten times longer.

It's why I haven't made another map, since. But I will make at least one more . . . eventually.

That's why you have to appreciate people who take the time to make and put out these things. It's hard work, and made doubly so by the lack of support and poor documentation. Once you've been in their shoes, you have a whole new perspective on it, and it's not so easy to simply dismiss a certain map as being nothing special. I've seen too many players criticize a map, when they have no freaking idea of what they're talking about until they try it.

Although I have no clue as how to make custom maps with DEdit, I always look at things like this from the POV of my own experiences and what I am familiar with. Of course in my case, it is filmmaking, video-artistry, animation, etc.

In OTCRFOB, the main thing is that NOTHING in there existed until I made it exist. Ok, I borrowed a couple of things like TOMY TRON, but for the most part - NOTHING existed until I made it. Every little part of scenery, background, animation, motion, character, EVERYTHING that you see - I had to make. I'm sure mapmaking is very similar in that respect. When you start out - there's a big NOTHING. To the nothing, you must add something. To add something, you must think of something to add. Once you know what you want to put in there, you must then figure out how to put it in there. Now that's the real trick in my video work - how the hell can I do what I want to do with the tools I have to work with? I'm sure much is the same in DEdit - I've read many complaints about this authoring utility. So then you got some ideas, and know what you want, but must figure out how to make it, given the constraints of the tools at your disposal.

Of course, it doesn't stop there. I know there are rules, so to say (programming), and other aspects of map making that go well beyond just building the digital blocks of the map.

So although I do not know what it is like to make these things, I do have a very high sense of admiration for all the hard work and creativity that goes in to them.

But you are right. Many people do not know a thing about the hard work that goes in to them and don't take the time to reflect on that. That's a shame.

There is also the other part of it. I hate to say this, but it's true. To most people, the hard work going in to the project means little if the outcome doesn't impress them to the fullest. And even if the results of all that hard work is impressive to them, they probably still don't give a crap about the hard work - it's just another cool map to them. Or in my case (my video work) - it's just another silly video on the internet - there's a million others out there that are far better.

That's just how most people tend to view things like this. And that's fine. I don't make my productions and expect people to enjoy them because they were so difficult to make or because I poured so much hard work in to them. I make them and put my hard work in to them hoping they will bring joy and entertainment to those who view them. I know most will never know and never care about how much hard work I put in to my creations - they'll just see a cool video... and sometimes just a dumb video some guy who had too much time on his hands put together. If only they knew how little free time I have to work on these things... oh well. It's not about that.

Anyway - regardless of how most people see things - know and understand that other creative minds will acknowledge the hard work that goes in to custom map making or any well-done creative project. I've said it before and I'll say it again - I tip my hat to all the talented custom mapmakers out there who have put their hard work and efforts in to such beautiful creations. Perhaps because of your interviews, more people will take another look at the custom maps and think about more than just what they see.
