You know - TRON pops up in the most unexpected places sometimes.
When I got home from work today, the wife was watching an old 80's TV classic and one of my favorite shows when I was younger - Knight Rider.
But there's no TRON in Knight Rider, right?
This caught me totally by surprise. I tried to think back to when I saw this originally in the early 80's, but I can't recall if I noticed it then or not.
But I noticed it tonight, and made a copy to share with everyone.
This video clip is completely unedited in terms of show content. The video and audio are exactly how it appeared on TV. The only thing I did was brighten the image a little (as it was very dark in the recording), fade-in in the beginning, fade-out in the end, and tried to mask the stupid logo that for some reason ALL cable channels seem to insist on putting in the corner of any show they show. I didn't do that so well with that, but after rendering it three times, I didn't care. I wasn't trying to spend time on this - just wanted to share a little bit of unexpected TRON.
Enjoy.

Sounds like they got the music from the game, rather than the movie.

Yes, that's from the game. Hehhe, GREAT catch.
Have you all noticed that even to this day that when someone is playing a video game on TV, that more than likely the atari 2600 pac-man sounds are in the background?
I get such a kick out of that.

Yes, it was from the arcade game. And I think it was intentional to use arcade game sounds because KITT was playing video blackjack with Michael. They needed a video game sound and chose TRON's a quarter was just dropped in sound effect. I thought that was pretty cool!

Yeah - ever since Atari's WORST-ever arcade port Pac Man came out, it seems like those awful, but very distinct sounds have been used to denote that a video game is being played. Oddly enough, it is STILL used today. You'll see some high-tech game being played in the background of some TV show, and there's the Atari Pac Man sounds right along with it - to make it so much more realistic, right?
I can't remember what I heard those sounds in most recently, but I do recall hearing Atari Pac Man as the sounds for some computer sequence in something recently. I really couldn't believe they STILL use those sounds. It seems they can't find some other cost-effective bank of audio effects?

Yes, I clearly remember that. I remember seeing that film in the theatre with my friend Sean. I think I was about 12 or so at the time. I rather enjoyed the film, though it was kind of corny in ways. Through a kids eyes, the film was great though. I thought that giant, evil computer of doom was so cool. And then when the bad guy was shooting missiles at Superman as he flew through the canyon, the computer display looked just like a video game! I thought that was so cool, because I was really in to video games and it seemed to work. While he sees a video game like display and shoots at a video game looking Superman - the missiles shoot at the real Superman. But... what was that? Atari Pac Man? Me and Sean actually busted out laughing, both saying "Pac Man" at the same time! Even then, it was laughable. It was a kids movie and many kids had Atari Pac Man. Did the sound guys really think those sounds would sell that part of the movie realistically? It made it kind of dumb... to me anyway. Here was this awesome super computer that could destroy Superman - and it was spitting out Arati Pac Man sounds!
In fact, I think that was the first time I had heard Atari Pac Man sounds used in film or TV as a substitute for computer or game noises. But I've heard it used so many times since. It's become one of those film and TV clichés - you know, like ANY door lock can be picked with a woman's hairpin and when they show a car chase through the windshield of a car - the rearview mirror is always missing, etc. Well, whenever someone is playing a video game, Atari Pac Man is what it sounds like in film and TV land! Just call up the local video game merchant at 555-1234 to complain about that.

Yes, but at least in TRON, it was not Atari Pac Man - it was a stationary, two-frame only, arcade-looking Pac Man. AND the audio effects seemed to be that of arcade Pac Man chomping dots... and/or the siren heard pulsing in the background. NOT the laughable Atari Pac Man sounds.

You know - I've been meaning to mention this for a long time, but I keep forgetting. This thread seems like a good place to put it out there though.
Remember the sound KITT made when he turbo-boosted? It was a very distinct sound.
Well, watch TRON and listen to the sound of Sark's carrier rush past the scene. In at least one place, maybe two, you'll hear the sound effect of KITT's turbo-boost as it speeds past.
Funny how so many films and TV shows used the same bank of pre-recorded (not unique) sound effects.

Wow, until you mentioned it . . . it hadn't occurred to me that the later part of the turbo-boost and Sark's Carrier in motion DO sound alike.
What other hidden Tron references might we find in Knight Rider, I wonder?

Just HOW do you guys pick up on something like that? Off the top of my head I don't have a clue what either sound like. Hmmm... maybe Todd will make a little video to remind the rest of us with normal (or below normal) hearing... or should that be memory?

I'm not sure which came first.
I suspect that the sound was just part of a library of audio sound effects that is for sale or perhaps available to certain studios via contracts or whatever. It just so happened that the sound designer of TRON used it for Sark's carrier and it also ended up in Knight Rider as the KITT flying by sound after his turbo-boost.
Of course, it might have been originally made/designed for TRON and then made available to other TV shows or films who paid for it... or something like that.

I've noticed that the first time I watched my TRON 20th anniversary DVD. I don't recall making the connection back in the early 80's.
The sound actually was more ingrained in my mind as KITT's turbo-boost fly-by sound because I saw and heard that so many times when I watched Knight Rider as a kid.
Again, I believe it is the same sound used for both.
And who knows what other TRON/Knight Rider connections we'll find. We'll just have to find them and chat about them.

I've always noticed things like that - it's just part of the way I think. Perhaps because I can't watch a TV show or film without subconsciously thinking about all the production aspects of it and how this was done and how that was done and which sounds were real and which were added in post (most and sometimes ALL are added/recreated in post).
So I think it's just the way I'm hard-wired. But I'm sure other people have that in them as well - redrain85 picked up on it as soon as it was brought up, so the sounds must have stood out some to him as well.
Of course, there's the Wilhelm scream. That's become a favorite sound for many people here to actually listen for in films. It is very distinct, and has been used in too many films to remember.
Hmmm... was there a Wilhelm in TRON or Knight Rider? Probably not. But there may be other shared sounds if we listen carefully.
